Well, having worked my way thru to Scen 8, yes, I found a couple things that might be called "bugs" or I might call them Fatal Flaws.
In a couple of the scens, where you and your allies have gathered your armies together to assault the common foe, the designer has left all the coalition members set to Enemy with each other, and to you. This results in total chaos as the allies kill each other off and try to kill you too.
But more disturbingly, this leads us to the inescapable conclusion that the designer not only did not play test his scens, but that he totally neglected to play them at all even one time, before submitting them to us as a finished product. It would only have taken 2 seconds of play time to realize that the Diplomacy was totally fubar'ed.
I am currently playing Scen 8. If I can survive my "allies" long enough to finish Scen 9 I will post a review.[Edited on 08/30/08 @ 03:29 PM]

Playability: 1.5
Some of the scens were quite enjoyable until something went horribly wrong and I discovered the Diplomacy setup was upside down with my allies killing me and each other. Some other scens were fun until they broke.
Balance: 2
There were some scens where there was no enemy on the field, and others where it was impossible to win. So on the average (as a statistician would say) it was about a 2.
Creativity: 2.5
Some of the setups showed good creativity in the tasks you were given and the ally troops working with you (when they didn't actually work against you).
Map Design: 2.5
Some really nice maps. Some fatal flaws.
Story/Instructions: 1.5
We start out with a lot of story and good instructions but the history gradually fades away and then we start to realize that the instructions cannot be fulfilled.
Additional Comments:
Scen 1--You Are Victorious! I'm sorry, did you blink? You must have missed it.
Scen 2--A nice map with walls carefully placed on elevations and walkable water! Nice trick. Fairly easy, just build towers and let the enemy feed his troops into them.
Scen 3--Suddenly all my troops, techs, resources are gone and I'm thrown back into the Stone Age. This is jarring and it breaks the continuity of the overall campaign, and it doesn't make sense. I have to build 4 barracks on a field with no enemies present. OK.
Scen 4--Safe on my own continent, I slowly build up while watching the Achievement screen show that there is a major battle going on somewhere else between my coalition allies and the enemy. Then I wipe out what's left of the enemy. Nice map.
Scen 5--I and my 7 coalition allies are formed up on the field of battle in the face of the enemy fortress. We are ready to attack the common enemy. Now something has gone terribly wrong. The allies are all attacking each other, and attacking me! After a while they're all dead. Now I get to take on the enemy all by myself. This is a chance to do some really fancy cat shootin. Normally you have to be careful taking out towers behind walls, so your final round just takes out the tower but leaves the wall standing. In this scen, the designer ratchets the difficulty up another level, where you have to fire on ground next to the tower to take it out without destroying the wall, and-- you have to do it firing uphill, which means your round may not land where you target it. Quite fun!
So in spite of my allies self-destructing, I wiped out the enemy. But that wasn't good enough for the designer. Turns out I couldn't win until I had also destroyed every last little building that my allies had built.
Scen 6--Once again I am thrown back to the Stone Age with everything gone. But I miraculously find 9 Gaia catapults. My allies have mostly deserted the field, leaving me with 2 allies, one of whom gets wiped out and the other is totally obstructive, refusing to relinquish control of the dang artifacts when I need to move them to my territory. Never mind, the instructions were vague enough that I moved most of the artifacts to a general area slightly closer to me and won!
Scen 7--Here I am in the Vally of Towers, with a few cav arch and a bunch of infantry. I am faced with a bunch of enemy cav and infantry. Fortunately I have my loyal ally with tons of heles to back me up. Now we are going to kick serious butt in the valley and then my ally's heles will take out the towers with ease. Let the games begin. But now something has gone terribly wrong again -- my ally's heles are firing on my troops! They have become my enemies! I wipe them all out. Then the enemy wipes out what's left of my troops. Has the designer actually play tested this scen? Or, has he even hit Start and watched it for 2 seconds? That's all it would take to see that something is broken.
Scen 8--This starts as a massive Death Match and then turns into a puzzle. I will spare you the Death Match. Here's the puzzle. I have wiped out all the enemy on my side of the river. Now I need to get my troops across the river to take out the enemy on the other side. There's no shallows path, so I need a transport. But I don't have a dock. OK, I'll build a dock. But wait, I don't have any villies. OK, I'll make a villie. But wait, I'm over my pop cap by about a hundred cuz I have so many useless ground troops already in service. OK, I'll demobilize a few ground troops until I get below my pop cap. But wait, I don't have any houses. So I'll build houses, oh wait, no I won't cuz I don't have any villies. So I'm gonna have to send my entire army home to their wives and children before I can make a villie. OK, I'll do that and then just build back up because this is a Death Match and I have 50,000 resources and plenty of mil buildings. Oh wait, no I can't do that because I don't have a Town Center to make villies and I can't make a Town Center cuz I don't have any villies. On to the next scen, it's gotta be better than this.
Scen 9--Missing. I guess that's better?
Overall--I would recommend this for a download if you would like to try some really technical artillery practice. And any other scens that sound fun, since you know going in that there will come a point where the scen is irrevocably broken and you just have to hit Fast Forward. |
