Magnus #4 - Merlin's Destiny

Author File Description
The Rasher
File Details
Number of Scenarios: 3
Difficulty: Mod-Hard
In the year of our Lord 1312, in the remote North York Moors of England, young Thomas persues his destiny - the conquest of Magnus, an 800-year-old kingdom, a island castle that harbors secrets dating back to the days of King Arthur and Merlin. Haunted by a beautiful woman he dare not trust, surrounded by enemies he cannot see, and with no army but a mysterious knight he saved from the gallows, Thomas faces an insurmountable task. Yet, armed with a powerful weapon he has concealed since his orphaned boyhood, there remains a glimmer of hope. To win Magnus, however, is only the beginning of Thomas' quest. One that will unearth ancient secrets, test his fragile faith, and place him squarely against an evil conspiracy that has ruled the land for centuries... This is the fourth and final chapter in a series based on the book "Magnus", by award-winning author Sigmund Brouwer. After a year of exile in the deserts of the Holy Land, Thomas of Magnus verges on discovering the final secrets of Magnus--only to learn a centuries-old battle depends on his next actions. Even if he finds a way to reach escape across the seas to England and Magnus, it may be far too late to win the final battle which has unfolded since the time of Merlin and King Arthur. The temptations to abandon his faith promise rewards staggering beyond a man's dreams, and to resist means the almost certain death of the woman who pledged him love forever. Don't miss the thrilling conclusion as Thomas meets the forces of evil in battle for the final time. If he loses, so does the world - as well as the woman he loves. This campaign also includes a custom made modpack designed specifically for use with this campaign. The modpack makes many changes, including different buildings, units, animals, terrain elements, and maybe a few surprises...

The Rasher saved his best in the 4-part Magnus series for last. He also has put in a sound bid to be proclaimed the master of both puzzles and modpacks. This one is quite hard, especially the final scenario. Top-notch puzzles and modpack work - some truly unique effects and innovative tricks, and the modpack install/uninstall is easy and works perfectly. Clever victory conditions. Challenging small and mid-size battles. Excellent terrain maps. Engaging story. Useful instructions and hints. Helpful and artistic bitmaps. Help Thomas and Katherine do in the Druids and achieve glory and happiness. An all-around winner--try it!!

He saves the best for last. And I’m not talking about just the campaign itself. All I can say is WOW!! I have never been so frustrated and captivated at the same time. I had to take numerous breaks for fear I would just give up and never finish the scenario. But finish it I did. A true puzzle master.

Balance: 5
The scenarios are fun and keep you on your toes and guessing. A word of caution, the last scenario is not for the faint of heart. I suffered a lot of humiliation and still kept at it. For those who find it a bit too challenging read the hints carefully and doe as they say. I checked them out after I had finally won and wished I had not been so stubborn and broke down and took a look. My pride would still be intact.

Creativity: 5
Creativity was the mod pack with some unique effects, and as stated clever victory conditions. Not to mention this is the final chapter of the story. Some of the tricks in the game leave you wondering what is about to happen next. The whole “should I go here… wait what if I die” effect leaves you captivated throughout the game. The epic in itself is a work of art.

Map Design: 5
Maps have moved up quite a bit in this final chapter. Excellent terrain maps throughout. Lots of eye candy to catch the eye. I was happy to see this as I moved about to uncover the map. Everything I encountered gave me pause. Beautiful bitmap

Story/Instructions: 5
I was both happy and sad to see this story come to an end. Happy because I could give it the review it deserved. Happy that I had finally finished the story and now know Thomas and Katherine have a future together. Whatever that future is, is only up to the writer. Truly saddened that it was now over and I had to come back to the real world and face my own trials and tribulations. This is the story great novels are made of, a work of art as I have already stated. The instructions are helpful and straightforward. Useful hints if you are in need of using them (don’t be stubborn sometimes it does not pay.) Again to Rasher BRAVO for a story and campaign well done.

Additional Comments:
I have said it from the start and I will say it again…Heck I will shout it for all to hear. Download and play this classic saga, epic story whatever you want to call it, just play the game. If you don’t believe me try it for yourself I assure you, you will not be disappointed. You have my word on it
