Playability: 4
I was able to beat it without major problems, except that I didn't win the way that I expected. Namely, I expected to win by moving my knight to the ark like the instructions said, but I won early by defeating all the enemies.
I used my priests to convert villagers and soldiers on the Orange team to the NW of my base and then used them to build a base and then take out the Orange team. Then I used the same strategy to take out the yellow team, and then having defeated all the enemies, the game automatically gave me a victory, even though I hadn't moved my knight to the ark like the Game Objective aimed for.
What the map designer intended, I believe was for you not to use that strategy, but instead to build up a strong enough army where you can defeat the crocodiles to the west of the lake by the red base. And then once you kill the crocodiles, mine out the entrance to the west of the lions to send your forces westward and then north, and finally get to the Grail. But for the player, this is not a great strategy, because the crocodiles are actually quite hard for soldiers to fight through, and you would need to build up a big advanced force. But it's much easier to take on the AI enemy teams first before they build themselves up, using the strategy that I mentioned of using your priests to convert them across the cliffs to your north and west.
Balance: 4
I thought it was good balance for an average player like myself, but the crocodile mass was so tough that going through them was so hard that I opted instead for a strategy that the designer probably didn't intend, as I explained above.
Creativity: 5
Finding the ark through the different challenges like mining a way through was a good idea. Very creative.
Map Design: 3.5
The design was above average because it had different little challenges like I mentioned, but my criticism with the design was what I said under Playability - the game ends before you get your knight to the ark if you kill all the enemies.
Another criticism I have is that you can't build a tower exactly on the flag near your base because the ruins are blocking it. I am not sure if that matters for beating the game objective though.
Story/Instructions: 3
This part is my main criticism. You can win simply enough- kill all the enemies, but that's not what is intended in the Instructions. But not only that, Objective 1 says: "You will have to construct a tour of ward on ____________ each blue flag". What does that mean? Build a "Watch Tour?" A "Guard tower"? If I put a watch tower there and upgrade it to Guard, does that count?
Additional Comments:
This would have been better for Age of Kings, because the Grail legend was especially popular in medieval times. "Perceval, the Story of the Grail" was written in the 12th Century.
I would still recommend this map though, because any way you do have to find the grail in order to win, since it's next to an enemy temple- if you kill all the enemies of course you will end up finding it.
Note: After defeating the red team, you will have control over the area near a lake with fish, but you can't build a dock: you need to convert the red transport in order to use it to get Scipio across.[Edited on 09/27/19 @ 12:09 AM]
