Topic Subject: Hex editing DE scenarios

Hey there!
I'm trying to do some hex editing on the units section of DE scenario files. As in RoR (and Age II) it's right below the Terrain section. Now, as a test, I placed some units in different RoR scenarios, opened them in DE and saved them. The header seems to be just a little different, but the structure of the unit list (X position, Y position, Z position, ID, unit ID, and so on). Is there any research being done here? Or could someone point me in the right direction?

Depends on what you want to achieve, but there's hardly any need for hex editing nowadays, especially when it comes to units and their placement. All can be done using either rocknror or the composite editor, or both, then just port the scn over to DE. I have never hex-edited a DE scenario but I assume its data structure is virtually identical.

It's for actually an Age II project.
You see, there's a not too well known tool called GenieEdit (not to be confused with the more well known Genie Editor) that converts Age I: RoR to Age II: TC scenarios and viceversa.

Using only hex editing, I ported the Coming of the Huns DE version from Age I: DE to RoR and then, I ported that to The Conquerors. This port is published as a mod for both Age II: HD (Steam)and for Age IIE (Workshop).

The issue is that I forgot how I did the first port, the DE to RoR and now I want to port half of the DE Yamato campaign.
I had to format my PC so I lost the intermediate steps and for my life I can't remember how was the unit section organized. The header is similar (but not the same), but the unit list (X,Y,Z, ID, unit ID, rotation...) is a little more different. The terrain section is all cool, though. It's only the unit section that's giving me issues.

It's been too long since I changed a unit using hex editing, I don't recall the positions, last time I did this was when I designed the heavenly escort campaign 13 years ago. Guess it's just trial and error if you are really keen on porting those campaigns (why not use the originals btw, the DE ones do not differ that much).

I already ported the original ones. My intention was to make a long campaign using all the scenarios from AoE and all the scenarios from AoE DE that happened during the AoE 2 timeline (and a little earlier, for continuity)

Hey there. I think I can help you a bit.
This only applies to normal buildings and units.
It does not apply to special gaia objects like cracks, rocks and trees.
