Since the Designers board isn't being updated anymore, I decided to make an own thread to keep people updated on the progress of my upcoming Campaign about Nubia, or Kush, whatever you like to call it. I think all people who are actively designing might start an own thread as well, as I don't think we're risking to have the forum overflowed with them.

SCENARIO I:
Origin
Status: Done

This Scenario depicts the birth of the Nubian Civilization, it takes place between the years 8000-3000 BC, and focuses on not getting killed by wild animals and paying tribute to the Mountain Priests. It requires the player to manage his economy properly, but is largely free, and encourages the player to explore a fair bit. It's controlled by a timer so there is still some pressure.

The stones at Nabta, which predate Stonehenge by about 1000 years, is one of the worlds oldest astronomically aligned sites, and an objective in this scenario

The latest addition to this scenario was a collective of Mountain Priests, which will ask tribute periodically. This adds a bit more pressure, as it requires the player to find the Market within the first 10 minutes, and keep a steady flow of gold. Also it adds the opportunity for a fun challenge, where you have to complete the map without doing so, and destroy the priests temple.

SCENARIO II:
Rulers of the Curved Land
Status: Minor Balancing left

This Scenario is set sometime between 1600 and 1500 BC, as it includes the Nubian attack on Elkab during Egypts 17th Dynasty.

The player has an ally in the kingdom of Punt (teal), which makes the scenario slightly easier

The Gameplay idea for this scenario changed a lot during development. It started out as a pretty standard B&D supremacy scenario, with an interesting limitation as the player could advance to the Bronze Age, but the only available units from that age would be Broad Swordsmen and Priests, while keeping all Tool Age units available. Later I got the idea of changing it, so that the player would control a small group of Bronze age units, while fighting respawning hordes of weak Tool Age units. However this idea went really bad, as I changed the players colour to player 8, and this messed up all the civilization settings. I then changed it to be more of a DM style scenario, but keeping the original unit restrictions.

What is still needed to be done is some eye-candy as parts of the scenario are kind of bland. Also it needs some serious balancing, to keep the Computer players from destroying each other.

SCENARIO III:
Dynasty of the Black Pharaohs
Status: Like, half done?

It will be a Diplomatic scenario, in which the player must Conquer Egypt from the Egyptians, rebuild Egypt to it's former Glory, and at last Defend it from the Assyrians. (They will have Stone Throwers!) This will probably be the greatest scenario of the Campaign. I can't give too much information as a lot of things will be implemented and cut out during the development process, but ideas include Greek Mercenaries, which can be tributed instead of being fought, having Egypt Ally you as you conquer the capital, having to raze decadent buildings only to replace them with your own, and fighting the Assyrian invasion. (Which is awesome) The scenario should have some pretty impressive dynamics to support some very innovative gameplay.

SCENARIO IV:

The Warring Queen
Status: Planned

It is a puzzle scenario with a cat (Tame Lion), a Queen (some ranged hero) and some royal gold (War Chest). The Roman Army has been advancing South, but the Queen is stuck in Thebes, which is already occupied. With the help of her faithful Mau she must escape and return to Napata to lead her army against the Romans. Deni-historically accurate.

The scenario follows the same formula as the 5:th scenario in Triumph and Tragedy of the Etruscans, ruler must escape occupied city, find army, and return to take over the city. (What can I say, it's a successful formula. Never gets old, really.) I think the puzzling factor included is good enough to make this a unique experience though.

SCENARIO V:
(No title yet, I'm thinking of making it something ridiculous though.)
Status: Planned
The fifth scenario depicts the decline of Nubia, and the rise of Christianity in Africa. You control a city (or base/whatever) which has allied with the Christian kingdom of Aksum. You must help spread Christianity to Nubia, and convince the king of Meroe to renounce his old faith. A conversion themed B&D scenario with limited resources, including a slight puzzle.

Questions:

Is there anything I need help with?
Right now I'll be looking for a playtester, as scenarios 2 and three are some of the heaviest to balance.

When am I expecting to finish this?
Okay, I seriously think there's a decent chance that the end of summer 2015 is going to work as a preliminary release date. But after all this time, why do you even trust anything I'm saying?

I said I would let it go if it takes more than 6 years, and I'm seriously worried that more than half of this time has passed now, and I'm like less than half done. I'm sorry if you're actually waiting for this thing, but it is still probably going to happen.

More information will follow.

When I said around Easter I meant late June. Seriously guys, I'm sorry for being so terrible, I just broke my computer and I need to move the files and everything...

At least I'm not Gumble, who's hoarding like 10 perfectly playable awesome scenarios for himself. :P

Some technical difficulties are making it hard to access the files containing the latest versions of the scenarios themselves. I'm really going for the "3 scenario demo campaign" goal atm but I'm honestly not even getting anywhere on that.

I might be able activate a screening keyboard from the login screen if I disconnect the physical keyboard from the motherboard while running, but it's kind of hard to tell through the cracked screen.

Use a typewriter to make internet ad, like that episode from the Simpsons. Be careful, a Bill Gate may ant to "buy" your enterprise and follow the way of ES.

What exactly is the problem, Fisk? A monitor issue? Keyboard? The computer in general? There's probably something you can do (external monitor, hooking up the hard drive to another computer, etc.) that would get you your files. This looks like an interesting campaign.

A monitor issue?
This exists, but it shouldn't make it impossible to acquire the files, as I have visibility of at least half of the screen.
Keyboard?
This is the main issue, after I screen cracked I removed the keyboard and all I have to connect it to now is a partially melted keyboard which keeps sending uncontrolled input which will override anything I try. The problem is, it's one of those designs where the power switch is part of the keyboard, thus I have to have the broken spamming keyboard connected when powering the thing on.

Now the thing is, I was confident I had gotten all the files I needed before I disconnected the functional keyboard, but now I'm not finding them anywhere. All I can seem to find are the damn AI files for the maps, but not the maps themselves.
The computer in general?
It's in sort of a disassembled state and the battery port is broken (it's literally a necessity to pick these things apart), other than that it's in great shape.
hooking up the hard drive to another computer
This is actually an incredibly easy solution which I for some reason had never considered. I'd have to find an adapter somewhere, but otherwise it sounds very doable.
This looks like an interesting campaign.
To be honest the main reason I haven't done anything is because even if I got the files I'm not sure I would actually bother to finish the things I'd need to do to have a product worthy of release. Even if I'd wrap this up I feel like the final thing would be somewhat uneven, but maybe I'm just being overly critical of my own work that I haven't even had a proper look at in years.

edit: Okay wait I actually bothered to check this out the thing is bootable I might do this if I can just borrow an USB keyboard from someone in the future.

See, this is why you should always make backups. Whenever I design something I make backups on a usb stick as well as emailing the scns to myself so they're always online in my inbox too.

Hooking up the HDD or SSD to another computer is your best bet indeed.

Well I believed I had made backups. xD In fact I wouldn't exclude the possibility that the files are somewhere on a displaced flash drive.

It's 2020 and I'm doing this. I got the files back. 3 scenario demo (demo of what? it's not like I'll be making a full product) campaign coming up sometime in March/April. Probably around Easter. The third scenario will probably still crash whenever you try to load saved games, but you'll have to think of that as part of the challenge.

I've taken a long look at the old trash heap and I've been trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. The issues I've tried to work out are mainly the uneven difficulty (scenario 1 is now harder to decrease the leap between that and the borderline impossible second scenario), the sometimes unnecessarily complex VC:s (I'm thinking of making scenario 2's a simple K/D check), choke points causing unit cluttering (spacing increased to the best of my ability). Looking at 2012 -13 thing today, there are things I'd have done different, but I at least feel like I've gotten this to a place where it might be enjoyable to play.

The things that remain to be done are mainly the story and instructions, and luckily I feel like those are things I can get down pretty quickly. But I don't want to go back to writing in the dumb scenario editor, so if anyone remembers what the maximum character limit for the different fields are I'd be grateful for that information. I should probably make bitmaps as well. Maybe I can borrow the old ES ones for the Egypt campaign, since we're kind of in the same region. Is there like a resource for those bitmaps but without the writing on them?

Maybe one of the betas had an incomplete Egypt bitmap, don't recall. Otherwise gimp might do the trick. Or maybe you're very crafty with Paint? I actually like some of it's limitations, requires you to think outside the box and use unconventional methods.

Yeah I actually went the long way and opened up the least cluttered map I could find and went and repainted it while repeadetly loading it into the game and printscreening to get those mapdefault colors into place. But trying to make a bitmap with the correct color palette in 2020 is ridiculous. Right now I literally reproduce two completely separate issues depending on if I try to edit directly in paint or if I'm exporting from GIMP. Paint gets all the colors messed up (like in NJ's Nippon Chronicles ) while GIMP creates some mysterious black tiling near the corners of the bitmap, erasing some graphics near the upper right corner. The latter might be servicable after all, but if I figured out a fix it'd be cool.

I use an ancient version of photoshop which never causes problems. Anyways I can probably fix the palette/right corner issues for you - once your map is completed, send it to me and I'll have a look.
