If you have been waiting for the next release in the Age series, well, here it is. Age of Empires 4 launched yesterday. It has many similarities to AoK since it covers the medieval eras. Some civs have unique aspects like the Mongols who can move their "TC" to a different location, mimicking the nomadic lifestyle. To those who pre-ordered the game, it was already available for download the 27th.

AoE IV is available for purchase from the Windows Store and also Steam Workshop.

For more info, check I wish I could have directed you to AoE 4 Heaven, but alas, it was not meant to be.

Yeah well so far the amount of interest expressed at HG has been pretty meh. Have any y'all tried the game out and if so, what are your thoughts? I was in the open Stress Test and while there are certainly things I like about it I also feel like there are quite a few features that are sorely missing (the lack of an editor might hurt the most to HG folks). As a competetive MP game it almost feels a little slow and clunky, but without having tried it I feel like the SP experience could be great. The historicity and sound design are some of my favorite things. I'm hoping more features will get added in eventually along the way, guess that's just the way modern game design operates a lot of the time.

It felt very generic to me, not bad, but not great. I played the beta and it didn't give me the wow-factor I was waiting for so I skipped the purchase. Still got aoe1 and aoe2 to keep my RTS needs saturated

Haven't played it, my computer is old and can't handle it. I have been watching some streams and videos. Get the same impressions as you guys. Not too bad, nor good, mixed bag. Many things that are missing (no editor or modding is a death sentence). No customization like custom hotkey bindings. Been watching the forums too what people are saying for a few months. I don't think the graphics are bad or cartoony but they do not impress me either. I absolutely hate the UI, it's fking atrocious. I do like the historic parts and music as well. I feel there's a major lack of innovation throughout and some parts feel rushed or something, can't really explain it otherwise. Being managed by MS I didn't have much hope anyway seeing how poorly DE was managed. Little to no communication or ineraction with the community as per usual.

Really hoped they would have went with the RoN style-type including multiple era's, maybe divide it over two games like aoe1/aoe2 era for Age IV, and then aoe3/the future for Age V.

Also, those who bought the deluxe edition got scammed big time.

I agree that the UI feels extremely generic, a bland blue background with really basic icons. One could argue that basic buttons are good for faster readability, but it's really lacking on being unique/giving a distinct identity to the game. Seriously, you could put that UI over any other RTS and you wouldn't feel that it doesn't belong there.

I like that the civs add some kind of gimmick in their gameplay to feel somewhat unique, a good compromise between AOE2 and AOE3 core mechanics while also addressing many of the things that I dislike about AOE3. The stone walls being impregnable to simple arrow/slashing attacks and thus requiring siege are a nice addition to the franchise and reminds me of Total War a bit.
Another interesting addition was the distinction of light and heavy units.

This game is only worth it if you like multiplaying on this kind of game. Graphically it's correct but frankly in 2021 with the power of the graphics cards, I expected a lot better.
