You would think after all these years they would have added a feature to share and play user created scenarios.

Let me rephrase that: Why didn't they finish DE?

Answer: No further funding from Microsoft.

It still seems strange that one would pour so much resources into updating the graphics but not even bother including something so simple as a file sharing mechanism for user creations. Then again, scenario designers seemingly haven't been a highly prioritized user group for DE.

Very strange that went out and paid an orchestra and spent so much on graphics but hardly anything on gameplay(path finding) and custom scenario sharing.

I don't find it that strange. I think the FE team underestimated the difficulty of modifying stuff like AI.

For me the only reason to even play AoE1 is the ES graphics and music, which are some of the best ever IMO. Therefore putting any focus on 'upgrading' this aspect of the game is quite strange to me;would make more sense to use those graphics and music in a brand new inspired-by-AoE game IMO

I think DE has a classic mode which is basically the old graphics, data and sounds

Classic mode has the DE interface and screwed water terrain borders. Don't understand how they could screw that up. I do love the new DE graphics and music though and tbh those are the best aspects of DE for me.

If only we could modify the game files we could perhaps finish some things ourselves...

Scenarios like those found in AOER offer:

A defensive scenario with a land bridge reasonably protected against a rush.

Choson Wars DM battle camp vs battle camp

Wonder Race

Deep forest scenario where you need to clear wood to make room to build.

There are many more including some AOM style maps like Anatolia with water on two sides of a large land mass.

The random maps that come with the game are still not balanced resource wise. Nor do the maps have much strategic variation as scenarios.

I agree the graphics and music can't be beaten. The gameplay is good. The UI takes some getting used to compared to the original but it's reasonably intuitive. The hotkeys are easier to use. It's just the maps that let it down again.

I hear classic DE mode can only be used in random maps vs AI and not campaigns or multiplayer, so not a great solution there. Also kinda negates the main advantage of DE itself, its own graphics and music. The only killer feature of DE I know of is walkable farms, which is indeed appealing.
