New graphics should not have selection masks, it crashes the game.

I got hyped by Jan dc's new buildings and wanted to try my hands at making aoe1 unit in blender.

Slinger upgrade seemed the best choice and here is the result so far with bronze and iron textures for shield/helm(it's a macedonian tall type):

What do you think about the outfit? The torso straps are similar to the short swordsman.

@Jan dc: Is this the original 3D model from ES? It looks authentic and much better in close up.

Here's some progress with the modelling. The ram took much more time to get ready for the game than I expected and it's still not done.

For the human model I gave it an armature so it can be animated now. As you can see I made a gif of its walking animation.

Once I have all the animations I could actually make any sword unit I want quickly by just replacing its attributes.

On that scale the Legion looks awesome!

What was the trouble with the ram?

Yeah, it looks much more detailed on this scale.

Well for the ram there were issues with the size, the lighting was off (and still is), I made 3 different blender files to accommodate the different physics although I'm now using scenes which fixed that but then the rendering script didn't work anymore and I had to find a solution for that,...
It's better now though.

Great work Jan! They're coming along nicely.
Fyi the tip of the feet look like the sinking into the ground when the feet touch the ground. Also, if you can put any graphic onto the swordsman it would be nice to see a Persian styled unit.

Maybe it's only a fool who'll perilously journey out to what might not be there. But if you want to solve problems, you don't just solve the ones that are there, you find more and make more and go after the impossible ones.

It's certainly possible. Just takes time to model the attributes.

Looking good, it'll be nice to see some armor on them.

Awesome!

However, the spear pixelation effect is annoying. Maybe make it thicker?

What is aa value you use? I used 1.0

Both look great but the position of the spear while walking dosent look very realistic.maybe you can make him hold it up or make him carry it on the shoulder

I just replaced the spear for a sword. The animations are for swordmen only anyway.

Indeed amazing. The roman legion looks like those who really fought at the second punic war and the persian looks like an immortal! thanks a lot for sharing your works with us!

Love 'em. I think the plume or feathers on top of the helmet is too thick or large though.
the spear pixelation effect is annoying.
Doesn't the original hoplite/phalanx have this also? I'd have to see the animation on a grass backgroud to be certain the spear isn't too pixelated to even see.

They have it but to a lesser extent, because their spears are thick and white, more like a staff rather than a real spear(similar to chariots too)

From what I've gathered there are 14 different animations to be done for the sword and sword + shield units.
Battle
4 Animations (15 frames each)
- Side slash over shield
- Side slash opposite from shield (used twice)
- Stab
- Overhand

Fidget
1 Animation (4,6 or 8 frames each)
- Nudge of the hips and the head?

Walk
1 Animation (10 or 15 frames each)
- Walk with swinging sword

Death
4 Animation (6 or 10 frames each)
- Forward collapse with rollover to the left at the end
- 90° swing and forward fall (used twice)
- Crouch with backward fall at the end
- Fall on the knees and forward fall at the end

Dead
4 Animation (6 frames each)
- Last frame of death but with blood, next the unit desaturates, the blood disappears, the body sinks and a skeleton appears.
- Idem
- Idem
- Idem

If there are people who want to do this for other units, it would be greatly appreciated and it would speed up the modelling.

Good job listing them, i doubt anyone would be making units though.

On the other hand RoR units use the same animation for all angles, so you could base the new ones on that to save time(like i did).

Well Yohomes2 and I will be doing the units, I was just asking if people could do the description of the other units to save us time. The slinger indeed has only one attack animation but I don't think RoR units added any sword infantry. I'd like to stay as close to the original as possible instead of doing it the easy way and only animate one animation. It's not like we have any deadlines so why not take the time for it .

I know some units in AoAK use the secondary animations. Haven't tested it in aoe1.

I would like a new infantry unit that does bonus damage vs infantry that uses no gold. This would be an excellent counters to swordsmen and in numbers even hoplite for civilisation who lack much in the way of archers or cavalry.
The new unit would be a bronze age upgrade to the tool age axeman so I think at this point in terms of naming should be the Heavy Axeman. The iron age upgrade should be called the Falxmam with the final elite upgrade I think could be called the Berserker unless somebody can think of a better name.

If nobody knows what a falx is well it was a weapon used by the people of the Balkans such as the Dacian and the Thracians, that was effective in cutting through shields, helmets and armour which the Romans learned the hard way during the Dacian Wars of the 2nd century AD. The falx was so devastating that it resulted in the only known instance of the Roman army adapting personal equipment while on campaign, the Lorica Segmentata was replaced with older forms of armour types of armour the Lorica Hamata (chainmail) and Lorica Squamata (scale) as the older armour were more flexible and was better at distributing damage more widely than the Segmentata. Other modifications included reinforcing the helmets with transverse iron straps, a heavily padded under-vest and the introduction of leg greaves and a Manica to protect the sword arm. Many of these modifications were used only for the Dacian campagin
