I have always thought that if one's going to make a dirt path near a city it should be clean, it would give the impression that the transit near a city is more frequent. But as you go farther away the path should start to look abandoned: terrain cracks, rocks and grass clumps.

Both RCM and Fruitfish made some nice observations: just as i thought.

I don't know how to post a image either, but I will share one of my forest tactics.
My scenario's usually play in Europe. I almost don't use palm trees. Before placing the forest I put some desert patches in the forest. I think it looks great to see a bit of sand inside a green forest. Mostly the sandplaces will serve as open spaces in the forest. I add pine and normal trees from the gaia menu. YES, it is a lot of work, but YES, I think it looks better. Add some nice dark patches. Add some stone and gold mines, berries, maybe even a gaia building partly covered by trees. Add some gazelle's, a bit of water, maybe even a lake or river, some lions, dead trees and rocks.
