Pretty Town Contest 2007

This is the pretty town contest for 2007. In this contest you have to make a village, a city or a town on a map, which is good looking. The tester has to see all the city. You can add slums and nearby villages, as well as different tilesets. No gameplay but you may include a story, a bitmap and everything you like, but remember - no gameplay. There must be no .cty files and no mods (except the enhanced editor). Your city can either be historical (Like Athens and Babylon for example) or fictional. The maps must be in SCN/SCX format.

You can :

-Use Language/x.dlls, .AIs and .PERS.
-No restrictions in the tileset/colour (Of course, the city must not be owned by the player). You can either place units (which must be blocked) to make sure the player sees the city or you can instruct the player to type no fog/reveal map.
-Make teams as long as you tell me.
-Use AoE or RoR.
-Add villagers and units to make a city active and bustling metropolis (recommended and rewardable).

You can not:

-Use .CTY files.
-Add gameplay, dynamics or battles.
-Use mods or utilities other than the Enhanced Editor.

Categories

These are the rating categories. You can take up to 5 points for each one.

Buildings - The logical placement, the color (because the civs buildings look better with different colors), arrangement, creativity and amount of buildings.

Terrain - The placement of terrain and/or terrain features. Does it fit with the overall scheme? Or it was just randomly placed.

Beauty - This is a tilt. Are there enough eye-candies? Does the city look realistic? Is it creative?

Note

Include a notepad file for the important things - name of the city, historical or fiction and other notes. Files must be compressed in a ZIP file and sent to me (nikokol(at)abv(dot)bg).

I hope this will work and good luck to all!

I'm trying to make this contest with no limitations at all, so you can enter eben in the last day. I'm going to add another place for a judge for more people to join.

Well I've made a start on it and it seems to be going well.
So you can keep my name as permanent. See where this ends up...

Here are the categories. A short explanation. I took them from the AoKH contest and changed them a little.

Niko: if fiction is allowed, why is it less rewarding? I mean, a historical setting needs to be accurate in a way that it resembles that place and that time in history, -yet- the fictional setting isn't easier either. You have to create both your world AND the history of that world; and the two still have to fit perfectly.

Well, I'll have to think about that. IMO the historical scenario needs a lot more research than a fictional scenario, in which you have freedom for the story, gameplay and almost ... everything. Once again, I'll think about that.

I agree. Both approaches are incredibly hard and would be difficult to pull off. With a historical approach you do have a plan that you can work off that can make it both easier and harder whereas with a fictional approach you need to think of everything giving you a lot more freedom but a lot more thinking is needed.

It'll be interesting to see the results.

I see any bias between history and fiction has been removed from the first post (right?). For the record, mine is fiction.

Well, TDA and BBalazs, I retought the historical maps scorings, but I'm not changing my position. This is only a map, not a scenario, in which you have to invent the story and gameplay - in these maps you have no restrictions (except the contest rules), while the historical map needs research, because the city needs to be in the appropriate location, appropriate tilesets etc.

I don't suppose you can have a mix then?

Because I've got a city loosely based on a real thing. :S

A story for a single map would take me just as long to write as it would to research. A story is something that takes time and I think if I were to design a entry it would be a must for me to include.

Also I still argue that the fact that you have a plan of the city can make it easier even if it has disadvantageous. In fantasy people will have to spend a lot (and I mean a lot) more time thinking on where to put things.

That is why I don't think I could put forward a decent entry now. To design a good fant town I'd need more time.

Even a historical scenario isn't as clear cut as having a map.

That's only an artist's impression a picture, and not many ancient cities are perfectly preserved and mapped. Most of it is guesswork, unless you're recreating Pompeii or something.

Yes but you have more of an idea what there was at the time. You know what Civs you should use. Also if you are crafty enough you can still mix civs up. For example you could design a roman city using Roman and Greek Title sets as Roman architecture was greatly influenced by the Greeks.

More of an idea? Unlikely...I mean, most maps give less information then your imagination. You could imagine the civs etc. much quicker then you could look them up.

@ Nandodude - I'll be happy to add you when you buy the game.
@ TDA : Never mind, I won't deduct scores if the map is fictional.

Reading through the thread history, I only just found out you can use edited dlls.

Could you put that up Nik? Just to be clear.

And perhaps a modified first post with clear Do's and Don'ts just to make it clear what's allowed.

Hate to be disqualified after all this work...

I'm well past 50% now.
