You can buy it now/pre-order in the Windows Store!
Well for a second I thought I was somehow able to play the beta again, but it turns outAoE DE has already launched based on your local time! And lucky me, I can play it already If you aren't able to play yet, hold out for a few more hours, and you should be able to launch and Wololo to your hearts content. You can already download the game in any case if you pre-ordered or bought the game, and with a whopping 17gb, it's better to start installing it already!
As I can now talk about progress from the actual beta up to the release build (which is 4994) I will share my personal experience as a long time Ager with you.
It still feels very much like a beta, as some parts are not fully finished yet which includes some missing features like Classic mode for every game mode, missing icon graphics in the Editor and occasional crashes. There is still some lag, and pathfinding has not really been improved. The game sometimes feels sluggish. Not in a definitive state yet!
It is, however, very playable, and it's mostly the Multiplayer part which has improved quite a bit over the last builds (something which I was very sceptical about!). It's far from perfect by any means, but you should be able to get a game going for sure!
Single player has also been updated, with new scenario's for the main campaigns, as well as voice-overs for the instructions. You can play an RM or DM match in Classic mode (the original game), which has the original soundtrack (yay!), but misses the old interface and uses DE's.
The Scenario Editor features a new "re-generate eye-candy" option, as well as new terrains (no snow, unfortunately), and new objects like grass bushes to play with.
One of the developers also mentioned to me that a new patch with more improvements is coming soon, so unfinished parts will *likely* be updated and improved upon over time.
If you can live with the flaws, it's a fun game for sure, so I hope to see you in a MP match soon
Have fun playing Age of Empires: Definitive Edition!
The Heavenly Escort • Night of the Dragon • Corlis (DE) • Dark Forest 2v2 (DE) • New Random Maps • Night Mode • Lengthen Combat Mode • The Big Hill • 512x512, 768x768, 1024x1024 map sizes • All Map Sizes • All Map Sizes (AoK) • BTI Soundtrack
