Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Nice topic!

to come one of these days 'cos it's still on work:

"The forbidden battle"(RoR) (the title should be to change) It's a cpn with 2 scn. ...Bizarre/Fictive/thriller, who knows!?...

"Shaman and his followers"(RoR) (the title is temporary too, I think) cpn with 3 scn ... fantasy/fictive/battles.

I have some ideas in the production line but I'll drop some words about that later.

Andrea, I should have mentioned that my two campaigns are both for ROR, at least they are being made in the ROR scenario editor. Unified Kingdom is four scenarios complete, and Alexander Lives is two scenarios complete.

Richard, thanks for playing the campaign that I submitted to the granary

I can't say that a submission's title should have anything to do with a reviewer's rating. The reviewer guidelines for the Granary don't mention it, and a designer should be allowed to title it without losing points for their effort. There's also a difference in what you may need for a title in fantasy or history projects, just like for gameplay. Although the player will also know whether the submission is historical or fantasy, as it'll say in the designer's description.

Quote:

I've played Rise of Israel, nice campaign but I don't think it deserved 4.8. There seem to be so many "Rise of..." campaigns, I think the designers should try to come up with better names.

Although I guess Phill would be the man to ask for the proper title punishment guidelines.

I knew my title before I made my scenarios. It was history, after all Fantasy may be different.

Quote:

I haven't got a title for my fantasy campaign yet either, I'll think of something as I finish the story.

I know there's simple sneaky effects I could have thrown in had I made it now, since it's been two years and I've been able to learn a lot from the forums and the editor in general. I don't know how many points that would be, or whatever my scenario should be rated, because a designer should never rate their own submission. I'd rather be deducted points for lack of playability and challenge much rather than the title.

The Granary guideline says this for reviewing:

Quote:

There is nothing more frustrating than spending weeks on a scenario and all you get is 'this is pretty good.

Read the review for Rise of Israel.

Right on :Tumbs up:
Cuase jsut cause the title might be unorinagl deson't mean it lose a mark.

Well, I rate my own scns but I don't send a review that I worte. But rating your own scns is important cuase if you don't like it its possible others won't like it.

I don't mean that I would deduct points for a bad title, hell I've probably done as many reviews as anyone else. I would tend to agree with Fire Legion, it is a very good campaign but so few get 5 stars, I don't think it should be right up there with them, but I would probably give it around 4.2-4.4, which is still a very good score.

I thought the scenarios were a little too similar to each other as well. The thing I'm talking about in titles is the "Rise of *insert name*" title, it is so common now, there must be at least 10 campaigns bearing that name. One of the first things you look at is the name, like today I was over at AoK looking for a good campaign to play, and all the titles just appalled me. The worst ones are "!!!!!*insert name here*!!!!!!!". I honestly couldn't be bothered looking at the reviews, the names were just so blah, and since most are unreviewed it's not worth the risk.

I think the quality of campaigns in AoEH far surpasses AoKH. I've decided I need to play AoK a lot more, I hardly ever play it. But there are so many rubbish scenarios. The main reason is that most of the newbie designers never bother to learn the trigger system, so their work ends up being crap. It's true for AoE too, but you don't have as much to learn so a bigger percentage of designers take the time to learn what to do and are able to submit some decent campaigns.

Also the trigger system means it takes a lot longer to achieve a scenario of similar quality to AoE. I still don't think I'm ready to design for AoK, I still need to find some good articles on Map Tricks like they have on AoEH here. The articles here made it really easy, hopefully I can just ask on the AoK forums if I can't find stuff.

On another note I'm thinking about submitting a big article like the map tricks articles. I found those articles really helpfull and they also got my brain thinking along the right path to start creating all the tricks I have made. I want to make something like an FAQ or a compendium for AoE/RoR, and have a summary of every area, like map tricks, allied victory, testing, etc etc. I have a draft drawn up for it, with the main sections, but I think I should get some help to make it, like making a topic on here for it and get some advice as I do it, what do you think?

Edit: Oh, and also I think they should have an FAQ or reference to some designing articles stickied on here, not just "This isn't AoKH!" stickies.

Add me:

My Campaign is about Qin Shihuangdi (there are thousand different ways of spelling his name) a cruel and relentless despot who became the first emperor of China in the 3rd century BC.

He is famous for being buried in palace filled with 'soldiers' made from terrocota and for the building the great wall of China to defend his empire from the northern Xiongnu (Huns?) tribes.

I plan to have 5 scenarios in my campaign. I've have completed one. I'm using the original AOE to make this campaign

I've been idle for some days because my whole telephone line had been burnt by a thunderbolt (not joking). Luckily my computer and my modem did not come to any harm

Now after some reparations I'm back.

I'll take care to update this Board, and people who are still waiting for a private reply about SD topics (e.g. Richard Ames and his RoR emergency) will receive feedback as soon as possible

Sorry for the delay.

If it was a real emergency I would be dead by now

Luckily it's not

I've still managed to keep finding new tricks

I've started working on an AoK campaign now, but I'm still learning the tricks by reading lots of FAQs and articles. I've also officially begun work on a new Fantasy campaign that I've been talking about. I haven't got a name yet but I've been going at it just now in the scenario editor, and I'm 1/3 finished the first scenario.

Here's a few new tricks I've made:

*Using the pictures and captions on the bottom of the game sceen as hints on the bitmap (eg your objective is research the wheel, but there is no objective written and you have to figure it out from the hint.

*Using a single tile for bring object to area, and saying something specific to buildings, like "Bring Tanus to the targets on the left side of the archery range". It adds a realistic feeling, and makes you look closely at the architechture of the buildings.

*I have found out how to walk through cliffs (climb up, down etc). I'm sure you guys can figure out how

Does anyone know how to get through cliffs? I call it the "one way ticket" trick, but sometimes you can get back up/down as well. It's one of my favs so far.

With transports, I suppose. It's a nice trick, however it's not very realistic to see a boat stuck on a cliff... maybe I'll work around it, one of these days.

posted 10-31-04 09:39 PM ET (US)     69 / 3000
That's right Andrea. I've never seen it used before, it makes a nice puzzle. You could have some stone mines and trees, and a waterfall on the cliff, and the transport could be stuck it the waterfall, maybe even damaged, and you have to use it to get up or down. Also it could just be an old boat that was left there, and provides a way to climb up or down a steep cliff.

I'm afraid that trick has been around since 1999. Budonian Tales (Jasonites) and Mauryan Empire (Spies and Renegades) used it with cliffs, and Two Brothers (Jason's Escape) did it with walls, just to name a few. Sorry about that... anyhow, good job finding it out yourself.

Ah well, I've found out plenty of other stuff. Today I've confirmed what I thought would happen using "Kill number of objects", it makes no difference who kills them, so for example your ally can kill them for you, you can kill them but make your enemy win by doing so, or you can even delete them yourself.

Oh and sorry for my ignorance Ingo, I am up to the Jasonites scenario too, but I haven't finished it yet What is this thing about walls? can you use walls to get past or something?

Something else I've discovered is light snow. It works great if you want a little snow but not a full covering, and compliments discovery snow very well. I'm making some snowy mountains in my map for the fantasy campaign, I'm almost finished the scenario actually, I'll post once it's complete. I use beach articles for snow, there are two articles that look like fish skeletons, but they also look a lot like snow. If you make many articles then use move and delete you can create a nice snow effect.

You can board a transport through walls in that scenario. By "jumping over the wall", Jason can escape from his prison.

The light snow sounds interesting, never heard of it before.

It can also look like a snow storm, but the flakes won't move of course.

I've now done over half my first scenario of the fantasy campaign, and I've completed the snowy mountains to the south. I think they look fairly good, but they took a long time to make. Hopefully this will be one of the most original campaigns in a few years. I'll post some screen shots soon. I'm also trying to think of a name for it, but since the plot isn't fully developed I haven't got anything definite yet.

I'm really looking foward to your campaign FL, if it is as good as Exile and CBR it will be a wonderful campaign. I would recommend you finish this one first, yet I am working on four campaigns and an article at the moment so I'm not one to judge.

I've completed my first scenario today, the scenario is called "Welcome to Echeia", it's the first in my campaign, and now I've done the bitmap, per file for tribute requests, and tested it. I'm really pleased with this campaign so far, it should be a good fantasy campaign.

I'm still researching Julius Caesar, I read a little about him each week. I'm thinking of making an epic historical campaign on his life, much bigger than the one that comes with RoR. I'm also thinking of designing for AoE, something in the same mould as Crystal blue river, or an advanced learning campaign with an interactive timer system, but for now I'm just working on the fantasy campaign.

You can post my fantasy campaign as 1 scenario complete, Andrea. I'm off to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm

Thanks for the update Andrea

Take a look at Emp Charlemagne's topic, he's interested in making a campaign where we all make it together. I really like the idea, it would be cool to see 4 or 5 different designers making a campaign together, and we could each have a single scenario for the campaign. I think it would be a lot of fun. Maybe even Andrea could try it. You could make your first RoR scenario Andrea, I'd love to see you do a scenario for RoR! We need another 2-4 people to work on this, let's get involved, it's a once only thing.

Well, theres a little problem.
Each map would look too different and get confusing for the player, as the bitmaps look different, story style different etc…

Unless if it goes little.
One person makes bit maps, one does stories, and another map design etc.. but you see what I mean.
Then it could work that way.

Really, a new mod? That's awesome!

There are some logistical problems with 4 or 5 people working on a campaign, it's not meant to be that serious, just a bit of a showcase. I agree that we would have to work the story out together or have one person make the story, but everything else is okay, it doesn't matter if you have different map design in our scenario's, that would be the whole point, each scenario would be quite different, but they would all be part of a story. They would all be different styles and you could see each designers different skills and compare the styles, it would be cool. We can work out the main story, then make up the details ourselves. We need at least two more people to make it work though.

I've started on the second scenario of the fantasy campaign, it uses the same map as the first but you change to a more powerful player (and the player you used to be becomes a CPU). The story alters as well, taking on a more sinister nature.

I've been playing Budonian Tales some more, I'm surprised just how long it is, I was thinking it would end but it just kept going, reaching higher and higher levels of fantasy style creativity. I think I'm up to the last scenario now. It's a great model campaign, the all orange/brown forest in the 7th scenario was just what I had in mind for the 3rd scenario in this, a combination of similar coloured trees to form a coloured forest. Only I'm going to make not only one single colour forest, but three. I hope it looks as impressive in the other two colours, I think it will.

I'm also working on making bitmaps with their own eye candy, so they look a lot more like the map. I've taken to cutting around trees from screenshots rather than the normal brown coloured ones, I think it looks more realistic, and you can add a lot of detail.

I've done a bit on scenario 5 of River God as well, I'd say it's about 33% finished.

Hope to post that I have finished it soon.

Im working on a design for AOE/ROR. Set in more a later Roman period, more fantasy though.

Working Title is: Duty of a Soldier

So far I've made a sketch of what the map should be, as to where placements of buildings, units. Objectives. The first one "The Borderlands"- is a mix of B&D, some FF and even some "diplomacy". This is mainly the exploits of Flavius Scipio and the men of the 7th Legion.

With a name like "Praetor" you would expect it to be about Rome. Sounds good, just make sure you stay as far away from "Conquest only" scenario's as possible.

I have a name for my Fantasy Campaign, "Forgotten Memories". I have to work on getting the victory conditions and tricks to work properly, and do the bitmap. The second scenario uses a new Archimedes trick, it's very vague so the player will have to experiment to figure out how to make him move. Also the entire instruction list and hints will be contained in the bitmap. I think the Archimedes trick is new, I'm starting to get the "Ingo did it" feeling, I think Ingo had one in Bud. Tales where you have to attack a wall to make him follow you, maybe I'll check to make sure it is in fact new.

Edit: Yes, it is new

*sigh of relief*

Liek, Edit to teh two:

I've just been looking in the contests section, are these works available in the regular sections or can they only be found under contest? This is pretty awesome, Ty Freeborn, Rasher etc.

Edit the third: Some screenshots. Just a couple

Well Richard, It is somewhat Roman based. But not conquest.
The objectives in the first one are a mix of B&D, FF and "Diplomacy". meaning you have to bring gifts to a tribe in order to win them as future allies.

This General has to be careful in his battles as well as not to enrage the barbarians he is about to encounter, and he learns later that the biggest threat is not a barbarian tribe...

Darn you Richard! You make your campaigns look to cool!

Alright how about this Andrea, delete my design efforts all together! But put me down as making a scenario, and in the planning process.. I dont have the patience to make a campaign in AOE or AOK, and will make my campaigns with AOM. So I think I will soley do Scenarios.

Thanks, I spent a lot of hours on that map, I hope it looks okay. Doesn't AoM take a lot longer? It uses triggers doesn't it?

Yeah I am going to learn to make little movies on it. And the beautify option is great for the oceans!

The editor on that game is much easier to use than any other.

AyOhE, I have AOK/TC and I went back into AOE to learn how to do editing with the tools I have. Once I get my "Duty of a Soldier" cpn off the ground, I'll probably tinker with both..

Here's a new trick I made.

You are working for a tribe and they worship a gazelle (or horse, whatever). They decide your objectives based on what the animal wants. Something random at the beginning causes it to move to one of (say four) different locations. Using allied victroy you have four different paths to victory depending on which way it goes.

I'm also trying to see if I can find a unit that can walk on snow.

Edit: No luck with snow, mercenaries, artifacts and tame lions even discover the flags, but in that I've found a way for mercenaries to discover gaia units (which they normally can't)

I've just finished scenario 2 of the fantasy campaign "Forgotten Memories". The invisible demon trick was too complicated so I scrapped it and did something with a tomb instead. I also simplified the timed appearance of the hero but made it so the catapult is destroyed too.

I think I have come to the conclusion that I dont have the patience/attention span to do a whole scenario...

Really someone has done that? Man, they must have travelled through time and stolen my future thoughts!

Thanks for the link FL, I'll have a look at your first campaign and BBalazs too, I like to play scenarios by people I know (no matter how bad they are). I'll also have to play this campaign by this guy that stole my ideas.

And you know someone else who stole my ideas? Ingo. I was reading his bio when a comment on his Mongolian entry (which I haven't played yet) came up about carrier pigeons, and I'm like "Hey! I just thought of that today you future idea stealing bastard!"

But seriously I feel happy that I manage to think up ideas that were originally made by great designers like Ingo. The one I'm really interested in is Andrea's timed appearance thing, when I get up to that scenario that is.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on the second scenario now, I tested it today and then added an ordered victory condition. Now I need to take five seconds off a tribute time or you can sneak away w/o paying, but I also need to make an AI file. I have an enemy with 2 barracks, 2 stables and only houses/watch tower defence. You don't have to kill them but you must protect your allies from them and prevent even a single razing.

I set their strategy to bronze cav, but they aren't making any cav, even though they are bronze, have food and gold, houses etc. I think I need to make a custom per and AI file for them, but I'm not very good at that. I want them to target a specific player and their buildings in particular, and I want them to make mainly cavalry. So should I just have an AI file with all cavalry and tinker around with a per, or should I use a base .per like aggressive?

Hopefully someone who knows can give me some advice, it's a fairly simple scenario but at the moment they aren't making anything but suicidal axemen, I think I need to work on attack behavior and build order.

I have just started twiddling around with .ai and .per files, and here's a problem that baffles me:

I needed a pack of units(i.e. cataphracts) to attack me by themselves at the start of the scenario. However, when I switched their .per to "Super Aggressive", they just stay there, until only I had a mercenary with a clubman in one corner of the map and they started fighting the units started attacking me...not in a whole heap, but in groups of threes and fours!!

Does anyone has a .per file that works in my situation?? Thanks...

P.S. sometimes Mercenaries glitched and couldn't do any damage to the opposing units and then the enemies do not attack at all. I tried using a BLP with an enemy unit, that worked, but still with 3 or 4 units a group, and there are some that stayed by where the BLP used to be and would not move a muscle)

(I seem like an absolute rookie here)

No Fire Legion what I mean is even a mercenary can discovery a discovery, so then a gaia unit on the flag would be revealed. Mercenaries can't usually discover units.

Fudgy, I'm not sure how to make a per file where the enemy is aggressive, that's what I was asking, but for mercenaries you can't be damaged by them since they have no line of sight. Try playing as just a mercenary, the map will be black. They can only attack units if the unit is visible to them. That means they can attack archers and such because ranged units get flared, but non ranged units don't get flared so you can't see to attack. If you have other units, flags, or ally LOS you can attack normally.

"Duty of a Soldier" is leaning more ROR than AOE. Just to let you know.
