Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

I've been tinkering with the final part of the second scenario, the Orlocks attack your allies, and I made a simple AI file to prevent them making the wrong units (they were retraining Clubmen)

I also tinkered with per files etc and I can get them to attack, and hopefully make it possible for you to lose if you don't help out.

Now to start scenario 3: An all new map, a huge challenge, but the freedom to make the scenario in any way I want

Give me a bell if you need help with triggers/objectives/parameters/dynamics. I have a bag of goodies if you need some originalish tricks or some cool stuff (eg multiple victory condition possibilities, timer based objectives like "Be in an area at a certain time and you will get reinforcements"

Mercenaries, I remember struggling to keep track of them on Fire_Legion's "Exile"...lol

I might change Duty of a Soldier to one more about Belisarius, the famed Byzantine General. But..its the question of whether ROR fits that time frame (6th Century AD) But I might use the story to inspire the background of Duty of a Soldier, instead...

I remember Belisarius being in "The Quest" in Age of Kings. Don't worry about time too much, 6th century is still close enough to AoE. Andrea is doing one much more recent than that.

I've started designing my third scenario for Forgotten Memories, featuring coloured forests and an artifact trick with a special clue using a new type of writing.

Thanks. I have both AOE/ROR and AOK/TC so I was kind of debating it.

But I figure it would be a good springboard. Anyone know a great desert map? the part that I would do with Belisarius would involve the desert sands of Persia.

What do you mean "A Great Desert Map"? You mean a scenario right? Alexanders Conquest of Egypt in the RoR best of is the first one that comes to mind, it's not the best map design ever done, but it's a solid five star

I'm currently making a historically accurate campaign about the kassites (a civ. that hardly anybody knows, so the chance that it has been made before is low). I'm not very far, though I designed the Euphrath (river) for the first mission which took me about an hour.

While sausages are tasty, you might cut your finger with that pencil over there.

Richard, I downloaded Gordon Farrell's Alexander's Conquest of Egypt (ROR) not bad, I had to use a campaign extractor in order to finish it, in fact I get that a lot sometimes. You win one scenario and for some reason it doesn't go to the next one in the campaign..

But Gordon's map of Egypt wasn't bad, I mean given the fact that the only fertile parts of Egypt are nearest the Nile. Also his instructional maps were excellent as well. Especially his "blueprint" for Alexandria.

But the campaign gave me some ideas on my Duty of a Soldier campaign as well. So thanks for mentioning that one..

Yes, that's a bug in all Age of Empires games, right up to AoK:The Conquerors. It can happen in about any campaign, and it seems to happen more often if people have many downloaded files in their campaign folder. There is an easy solution though, easier than extracting scenarios: Delete your username (e.g. Gaius) and create a new one (e.g. Gaius again). Restart the first scenario and skip it with "home run". Now the next scenario should appear on your list.

Ingo, LOVED Budonian Tales, EXCELLENT Campaign! Question I have is on one the scenarios (Pirate Island) and I've seen this on many scenarios, you leave an area then the diplomacy changes to Enemy. how do you do that?

Formerly Gaius Seutonius- XX Legio Valeria Victrix!!
posted 11-22-04 04:12 PM ET (US)     122 / 3000
Well...

*I'm impersonating Ingo here btw*

When I made that scenario I wanted to make the city attack you as you left the area, so I added some towers around the cliffs and used a trick I first used in an earlier campaign where you find a Gaia scythe chariot, which attacks an enemy unit and accidently attacks an ally unit as well.

The first Gaia unit you find is a priest, and because of its long LOS you find a far away Scythe chariot as well. The trick is to keep the scythe a long way away and have it killed quickly to cover up the trick. Place a long LOS unit first, this is the one you will discover first. You could use a priest or something similar, then put a scythe where the priest can just see it, or maybe even further away with another priest in between for example.

Now put a scythe chariot (Gaia) in an enclosed area, preferably covered with forest) and put an enemy unit next to it. Then put an ally unit next to it as well, and the scythe will attack both. The former ally takes that as an attack and becomes your enemy, and then the new enemy kills you. A good unit to use is a centurion, they will kill the scythe before you can blink.

I'm really sorry to hear about your hard drive, did you make copies of anything? I copy my important files onto CD every month or so, but I haven't got enough copied yet to feel secure.

As for the campaign, it's Pirate Island (or something, hey I'm not actually the designer) in Budonian Tales. It is used in other campaigns as well, I even use it quite a lot.

Quote:

Um, right...

You can try to send me to jail if you want, but I don't think you'd get very far. You don't know where I live, what my name is etc etc, and even if I copied an entire campaign of Ingos there is little he could do, aside from hit me with a cyber space sledge hammer. When designers put copyright signs on their work it's just a novelty, they don't really have any legal rights. Besides I wouldn't do that anyway

LOL, just wanted to say I appreciated someone responding to my question about the trigger using GAIA units. Fire_Legion I liked Exile a lot, your jungle was very well done, and the whole scenario was great, especially "dream" that was just a stroke of genius.

I actually tested it and surprise it worked. So I have ideas on triggers. Here's the premise I have for "Duty of A Soldier" this is the first scenario {Cataphract)

Story: For two centuries the lands known as the Republic have enjoyed a relatively prosperous and peaceful time. The Senate once again governs. Peaceful relations with the Eastern Host and the Borodonii tribes to the north have allowed this time. Republican troops on the borders grumble about the only enemy they face is boredom.

But times are about to change.

Senator Rilias, a man of growing power and influence desires more power, and to this he knows if he brings more territory to the Republic, it will enhance his reputation. He has his eyes on the lands bordering the Eastern Host, near a body of waters called the Sea of Tears. Pirates have operated near these shores, and have been a sore spot for trade. Rilias knows these lands are near the Host's homelands, "A poor excuse to risk a war," he muses, but the reward would bring riches to the Republic, as well as land, as well as gain him more power amongst the Senators. What price, ambition?

I just got to put in all the information and all the victory conditions and such.

I may have to step in some AI scrpiting to get some of the civs in my fist scenario to do what I want them to do...

Thanks

One more scenario complete for River God. I've almost finished it, I've spent hours decorating a medium map (seems a lot bigger when you make it look pretty). It is a defend an area scenario, and then becomes puzzle and technical, rather then fixed force. You must carefully follow a path and then torture some bad guys, making sure not to kill them. I just have a little map to finish, but for arguments sake it's complete.

A question: Does anyone know why there are 3 types of tree stump?

I've just made two new tricks. I think they are pretty cool, what do you think?

1. Use ally or enemy tame lions hidden (eg behind trees, this is because they have no death, they just disappear when they die) to move a Gaia unit like an elephant king or a lion (this is taken from Andrea's timed appearance trick, only it is used in a way so that you can see the creature moving).

Example: You must defend your barracks until an elephant king storms your enemy farms (stone age scenario)

2. Boarding an ally transport

Wouldn't it be cool if you had a AoK style transport trip? I just tried it and it was awesome. I used Andrea's transport Per file (yes, I guess Andrea will be getting half the royalties for these) and I jumped on an ally transport. It was really scary, an axeman was my only unit, and it went all black. I was like "OH NO!" and then my axeman popped up on the other island alive and well. Great little trick, especially if you are a small fixed force co-opping a CPU player.

Cool tricks, I especially like the second one.

While sausages are tasty, you might cut your finger with that pencil over there.

I've been playing around with "Destroy all objects"

If there are none of that unit on the map the condition is complete

To destroy a ruin or artifact you must own it (you can't delete it, I mean "destroy" as counting towards the condition)

Artifacts wheels don't actually turn, if you look close they seem to "float" on the ground (or hover above it if you prefer). This is in contrast to siege weapons which do have moving wheels (and chariots etc too)

If you upgarde units you lose/if they upgrade you lose

-Examples of how to use: Parameter that you must not upgrade a unit (and makes it harder)

-Tribute a powerful enemy as an unusual strategy, and make an AI such that they will use the resources to upgrade and hence lose. You could say that there were poisoned fruits in the food you sent to the king

Academies just plain don't work (at least in my experience) with destroy all objects or destroy number of objects. I don't know why, perhaps it has something to do with why you can place water underneath them.

If you have an objective to destroy all objects, you must destroy all of them for not only that enemy, but every other enemy. So player selection is really trivial, since it doesn't matter which enemy it is. If you didn't know that you would have difficulty with this condition.

Don't try and make it too long. I've done 7 scenarios now and I'm still at least 3 more away from releasing a campaign.

I've been playing around with River God Scenario 5, Rebellion of the Slave Girls. I finished the map yesterday and tested and kept adding and changing the victory conditions. I don't know if it is hard enough, I find I win about half the time, but I do know what to do. Dangrimm has offered to test for me.

Just need to fix the victory conditions and make a bit map, then I can move on to either the unfinished fourth rpg scenario, the fixed force sixth scenario, the build and defend seventh scenario, or the third scenario of FM, which is half finished. I'm looking foward to releasing something.

WOW, great idea Richard, but... I fear it can't be done. How can you put a condition so that the CPU loses if he researches a technology and/or makes an upgrade?

@Fudgy: welcome, welcome, welcome! Hope you'll take fun in creating your campaign
