Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

You should very the trees you use more in below the path because in that screenshot it looks unnatural with the same trees used constantly.

Also remember to include a few other than red coloured trees.

Spoiled trees would maybe also fit in.

Hey all! i am making a new campaign for RoR named 'the Odyssey' it will follow the journey after Troy taken by Ulyseus. heres a few screenies of some bridges on the islands he lands on....i got the ideas from the Map Design Series...u like?

This bridge will be used over desert terrain....

This will be used over grass valleys...

The campaign will take long to make but i think it should be better than ormofopolis...

Wow! I didn't expect those bridges, especially since they are quite large. "The Odyssey" has a name that has already been taken you know. I saw a campaign with that name a while ago and it was a very hard puzzle one.

I wonder if there is a way to drop shadow under the bridge, so it looks better. Maybe you can give the effect of shadow using grass and desert patches. Over water you can use deep water, as I used in my bridge (which you can see in my screenshots, campaign under construction).

Dead trees are extremely versatile, but I guess you can use anything really, so you could use desert patches and cacti for example.

I've just come into the designing spirit again, and started to remake the first scenario of my Kassites campaign. The first one wasn't so bad, but it somehow flops in terms of creativity. The only thing you have to do is kill enemies with your troops, take out towers with your stonethrowers and kill of all the granaries and the enemy leader.

The new version will include some puzzles aspects (I've already made one which I think is fairly nice) and fixed force elements aswell as a little build & destroy.

I unearthed the Egypt Ultimate AI's 1.4 version and modified it, to make it better. New stuff include:

City plan to reduce the number of idle villagers
Small changes to Personality file
Major changes in AI file - mainly to defend against early hoplite and cavalry attacks, though this is still a problem
- Tool age defense
- Faster priest training
- Somewhat improved economy

I've just had a very weird experience. In the scenario I'm working on, one of the victory conditions is to destroy the stable of the yellow player. At first I had given them two stables, but then decided to make it only one. The individual victory is still set to 'Destroy all stables of player 3' though (there aren't any other VCs yet). As I reached player 3's stable and destroyed it, I did not win. As I found a gaia base (including a stable) soon after though, I won.

How can this be? Do gaia objects have effect on the 'destroy all objects' condition?

Perhaps you don't win since the game engine "thinks" that the Gaia Stable could be captured by your opponent. Since it's a CPU player we know this is impossible. This is just an idea, however I suggest you to use "destroy specific object" in these cases.

Little Freak:

I've experimented with that and destroy all objects means ALL not just any player. It has to be all excluding your own. This bug seems to be very common so it is unreliable. I think sometimes it doesn't occur and sometimes it occurs very early on and you can't fix it. In its proper form it is meant to be only for one player. Try making a new scenario and see if it occurs right from the start, by giving Gaia some of the same unit.

I've nearly finished Senate and People of Rome Andrea, I'll do a review for it so you can see what I thought of the original. I'll review the new one as well, I quite feel like playing it now even though it hasn't been that long since I started playing the first version.

I'm not sure, but I might have to start remaking the third scenario. I don't know if I can fix it, but the problem is where the computers don't do anything in PASSIVE unless an enemy comes in a 2 square radius of the unit. The CPUs used to be more active.

Just give them a different per file. A unit should always attack if you are visible to it on medium and up, I've never heard of that. I don't like the way only one unit moves when attacked though, I change that a lot, so they retailiate as a group.

Nice Gaia Wonder, Upnotep, and great combination of terrain cracks & roads. Dragging those stone paths upon eye candies is a job, isn't it?

I'm almost finshed with my remake, and in a few days I should be able to release the updated version of "The Senate And People Of Rome". I've come to the lesser fun part of the work, editing all 8 bitmaps. Apart from writing my name on them, I need to change the fonts used and get rid of all those flags (I don't like them anymore) indicating the Roman expansion. Also bitmap 1, 2 and 3 should be zoomed in.

Alrighty. Finally got something going.

Exploding Birds
AoE
Status - Planning

Here's an excerpt of the first scenario.

Jason stood there at the spot he had just hit the bird. After throwing his spear in a desperate attempt to gain some food for the day, the damn thing had exploded with no trace left except for the faint smell of smoke, and not a single feather fell. His mind tried to reccollect what just happened. Spear Thrown, yes yes, bird hit, right... Bird explode? Great Gods, what a confusing thing to have happened. Jason thought about it a bit more, and looked up again. There was no bird. Just smoke. He decided to return to the village for now, and contemplate this world. Because of the bird, Jason became a bloody philosopher.

At the great city Kanaan, a coronation was in progress. Prince Alexander approached the old preist clothed in white robes and smiled at him. Today was his day. His father, Perseus, had died only a day earlier during a battle with the Laxos, and though sad, Alexander was thirsty for power. He had wanted the throne for a long time now, he was almost twenty-six, and he was considering assasinating his own father were it not for little enmity between them. But oh how wonderful - Alexander needed not feel any guilt now for the deed had been done! The Preist Amon Ra stepped up to Alexander, and so began the crowning.

The Village leader had said to go seek out Amon Ra, the great priest, in Kanaan to solve the great mystery of the Exploding Bird. Jason had thought up of this name, and considered himself rather clever for it. Dressed in his white cloak carrying a short sword, Jason prepared for the long trek to the city. Many things plagued the road, bandits, Laxosians, and merchants. Damned merchants. Jason knew to keep his purse in a close and hidden spot, and to remember everything the Damned merchants sold always fell apart.

On to the city, to Amon Ra.

Objectives
- Reach Kanaan Alive
- Find Amon Ra, the Great Priest

Map Design you can easily learn. There are plenty of good articles about that subject in the Siege Workshop.

Basic rules of thumb are:
(in no particular order)

1. Make it realistic. In nature, you wouldn't have symmetrical blocks of forest or 20 berry bushes lined up in a row.
2. Keep an eye on the detail. Little details are what makes a map good looking.
3. Be inventive. There's a lot of stuff in the gaia menu which can be used as eyecandy somehow.

Andrea- I haven't given up on Duty of a Soldier (might change the name and some concepts.) Just haven't been designing at it lately. I have problems with editors, while I LOVE them, I find myself hitting the erase button too much, lol.

Richard- Congrats on the contest.

Nice to see we're around still.

Salve!

All done. In a couple of days I should be able to upload the new version of my campaign. Come on!

Now the only thing I need is an empty CD to transfer the file to my laptop and then submit it to the Granary. Obviously my PC is still banned from the net thanks to a f$*ked virus. But I'm still here! They won't stop me! Nobody will stop me! With this laptop by my side I will rule thjekfndnvwewwwwwwwwwwwww

Note to all readers (from Doctor Goffredo Pirloni)

Shortly after writing this message, we had to check Andrea Rosa into our serivces. After many attemps of restoring his PC connection, we believe that Andrea lost short-term memory and many of his synapses were destroyed. We must assume that the combined stress for the Shoreview Contest and the remake of the 8 scenarios of "The Senate And People Of Rome" weakened his defenses. He is now resting comfortably in room 15A, regaining his strength and going through various physical and mental excersizes to restore his brain and body to working condition. Please send your condolenses to Andrea Rosa. And do not, under any circumstances, ask him about Symantec.

Thank you,
Doctor Goffredo Pirloni.

Well done, Andrea de la Rosa. It's about time I got around to finishing that last scenario and doing a review for it too.

I also heard you have been doing a good job in the Formula 1, hope to see you getting a start in the races soon.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that kingdom. Did I accidentally burn it on my trapsing through the lands of Banworld? I hope not.

Thanks for the info, Upnotep. ^_^

Well so far. I've figured out a really interesting set of victory conditions for the first scenario of Duty of a Soldier titled "The Kys Revolt"

Like Gordon Farrell, I've come up with a good story that sets the background for the scenario (or at least I think it does...)

But to not give too much away, Im kind of stumped as to why certain victory conditions work or don't work.

In this scenario the player has a certain objective
1) destroy a building or buildings

but if he gets Hero Scipio killed, loses
and if Zenobia's tower gets destroyed he loses as well.
I tried to set it up as
1) destroy house
2) destroy a Gov't
then 3) destroy the tower..BUT for some reason it wouldnt work right. I wanted the buildings done in ORDER if the tower was destroyed BEFORE the house and Gov't Center..you lose. But somehow it didnt work. But I hopefully figured out a reasonable solution, and in play tests of just this victory condition it seems to work out nicely.

So far so good...

When it comes to victory conditions I'm the best in the business. I charge a modest $500 an hour, but the first hour is free. You can send me the scenario if you want, I'm sure that victory condition will work. You shouldn't have to change it if that's what you want, it doesn't sound like there's anything that can go wrong with it.

Nice pic, Sol.

Probably add some palm trees to the forest though.

While sausages are tasty, you might cut your finger with that pencil over there.
