Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

I'm still seeking a good civilisation to make a historical campaign about.

Maybe I should just remake the Kassites scenarios though, and continue working on that campaign.

I don't like how the first two scenarios are at the moment.

I wonder why you're all wondering about making it smaller.

What about just uploading two versions?

One with AVIs for guys who care, and one without for those with slow internet.

Anyways, Balazs, I've just downloaded your scenario, will play soon.

I'm having the same problem Upnotep has and the problem that I can't install the hex editor that came with your bundle for some weird reason.

EDIT:

You could provide a link where to download the Hex Editor alone, other than that it's fine.

I've just designed a city, but when adding elevation 1 under some walls my Age Of Empires suddenly crashed.

It does that from time to time.

The bad thing is, I just started the scenario and so I have no backups.

Does anyone know how to fix that bug?

Possibly it was because of the 1.0c patch. My game collapsed every time I tried to test my scenario for the second time. So every two times I tested, one crash.

Regarding DA's question, you can make the computer return artifacts by setting "SN Artifact return distance" to max, which is probably about 140. They won't consider anything if it is too far away, I think, if the number is set too low.

Also, to get it up their priority, set Artifact defend priority to highest, and the rest to none.

Also, if you are playing on standard so that artifacts (and wonders etc) matter, they will focus on them more. But this may not be a possibility. I have noticed CPU won't attack my wonders with the same fury as they would if there was a countdown.

Little Freak: The file "Default..." is a good recovery system. If you save often, and test often, you won't lose progress. If you don't... it's your own fault. Whenever you test the file is saved to default, so if you did test even once it should be there. If you don't test, it won't be there.

Here's another new trick I just made looking at my estate picture. It's like Lennarts palisade walls, and it work's in RoR only.

Make a moat using Andrea's paths and shallow tiles (irrigation), following the techniques in his webpage. But place invisible trees under them first, before you move stiff in. That way you can surround a building with a unique looking moat, and it can't be walked over, or attacked.

I've redone the story a little in scenario 2 of R.G. I just altered the sentances a little so they flowed better. I also changed the maze, getting rid of all orange oaks from the forest and replacing them with other Gaia trees, so it doesn't look quite so dull.

Apart from making more eye candy for that level I also need to rethink the instructions. I think I'll just shorten them and make them clearer.

I've discovered that a trick used in AoK can also be applied to AoE. In AoK you can cut and paste negative numbers into the quantity box for unusual effects (like healing a unit instead of damaging it)

It working like this: In the quantity box you can only type intergers, and if you try to paste a negative number it won't work. But if you manually right click and cut a negative sign from the messages box, then you can paste it into the quantity box.

I've just discovered this, yet I doubt there is any use for it. Perhaps if anyone can think of a quantity it could be used for? Well, either way, it's neat to know how to do it even if it has no application.

I still can't figure out why my old allied victory thing isn't working. It seems as if it was all in my imagination.

Okay, so my idea probably has no practical use at all. Happy?

Here's a couple of new things I was thinking on

1) If you want a player not to task Hero Corlis/Hersifon, then set "Destroy # of units (Hero Hersifon - 1 etc)" to get them to lose if they task their Hero

2) If you want a player not to be able to lose any units of a certain type, but not until a point, use a second objective in the CPU's IVC set, e.g. destroy # of objects - composite bowman - player 1 - 1, AND destroy specific object - blind lame priest. As soon as they train this unit it would kill the BLP and they would lose if they had any of this unit killed. You'd have to work out what the second victory condition should be yourself, in this case the archery ranges would be in an inacccessable area, but if they weren't you could make it a timer or something.

I'm play testing my 6th RG scenario, a Gaia tower was killing units, the caravan was running off...

I'll re-review it soon when I have time, but you need to wait a bit.

Anyways, we should test some stuff with that negative number thing. Maybe we can get something useful outta it.

Quoted from teh Ames:

1) If you want a player not to task Hero Corlis/Hersifon, then set "Destroy # of units (Hero Hersifon - 1 etc)" to get them to lose if they task their Hero

But wouldn't it suck to loose if you accidentally clicked on a tree?

Quoted from Amsy:

2) If you want a player not to be able to lose any units of a certain type, but not until a point, use a second objective in the CPU's IVC set, e.g. destroy # of objects - composite bowman - player 1 - 1, AND destroy specific object - blind lame priest. You'd have to work out what the second victory condition should be yourself, in this case the archery ranges would be in an inacccessable area, but if they weren't you could make it a timer or something.

I don't fully understand this one.

It would kinda suck to lose if you click on a tree, but you may still want to do it. It means you can't get distracted during the mission, and it's unrealistic if you don't have the right unit anymore.

The second one is um, not very well thought out. Don't worry about it. It's just tying to explain that you can use a second objective with some conditions so that you don't lose until both are complete. Or you can have a way of removing the objective - Say you aren't allowed to lose any triremes unless you kill a certain guy. Then your commander will be so pleased that you killed him that he won't mind the lost ships. You can have "Destroy # of Objects: Trireme - 1" for player 2, AND Have "Create # of objects: Hero Xerxes - 1" then when you kill Xerxes they no longer have a full set and they can't win. It's an alternative to beating the player.

Actually, there is a Temple at your base. It's just not in the screenshot. And for the Wonder I placed a clump of trees and moved the Wonder over. That's how I got my Wonder.

I know how to do that, but thanks anyways.

I can confirm that my idea of pasting a negative number into the quantity box has NO application what-so-ever. I thought it may have been usable for kill ratio (I wanted a negative kill ratio but not TOO negative as a victory condition), but kill ratio stops falling once it hits zero.

And what would a negative kill ratio be?

It's a concept thing LF. However, it is also a tricky thing to judge. Getting hammered in the early stage of the game may give you a negative kill ratio the way richrd sees it because you are losing units without killing much, but you turn that around and it changes to a crushing victory. Most scenarios are about holding off the rush until you can turn the tables and wipe them off the map.

To be rewarded for not killing the enemy would be a nice touch but even later games don't let you do it without a complicated trigger system, and it would be complicated even then. You're talking about trying to override one of the fundamentals of the game, namely to build/age up before the rest and destroy.

It would be difficult, to put it mildly, to get the game to play against the way it was designed.

The fundamental reason that negative numbers don't work is that there are no negative numbers in the game, and any that there are (perhaps tribute?) are not available in a quantity box form. Kill ratios is kills-losses, put it cannot fall below zero. That means it's not secretly stored as a negative number when it is below zero, but worked out each time based on kills-losses.

That number was the only one I thought it may have any chance of working for. I was hoping to have something like "Have a kill ratio of -20" for example, so that you could only lose 20 more units than you killed. Getting a positive ratio in this mission is fairly difficult.

The mission is sort of a mountain siege, where you have to capture their leader and their gold, and destroy the treasury. This part is timed, but once you have your man you have to raze some buildings and build up your kills, since kill ratio won't be any use. I'm still testing the level to work out what an acceptable number of kills is, and how much time should be alloted.

I have the map set out in such a way that there is two paths: A fast one that is hard to see and where you lose many men, but should get to their leader in time; and an easier path where you will have to get there as fast as possible.

The "copy by right clicking and paste" thing is an AoK trick, and can be used to do a "negative tribute", make units invincible, heal units etc.

If I can get a positive kill ratio, I'll probably use it, since it would reward you for keeping your men alive.

I haven't seen Conquesticus for quiet a while now, dunno if he's still on it.

For my projects, I'm currently not working on any of them.

I'm way too lazy.

As we are talking about our projects again (and we always should, as that why this thread was made for), I want to say I'll remake my first two scenarios.
