Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

The other way, is editing the files with a text editor, but it's harder, because you need to know every code these files use.

BTW I'm beginning the 2nd scenario for my "Stories of China" campaign.

Cool.

I'm looking forward to play it.

One hint though, you probably should not upload each scenario separately. Instead, get a beta tester, and upload the whole campaign once it's finished.

Dose anyone know how to make a Per file that is quick to attack and doesn't care about his units dying? I need it for my campaign.

You'll want to give the enemy an idea of where to attack - place a flag underneath one of your buildings. Also, maybe if you want to give it incentive to attack early give it a small groups number, so it's minimum and maximum group sizes don't cause it to wait until it has a large army. You can give it a large zero response distance number so it will come right across the map at the start to your base if you are attacking some of it's units at the start.

Making custom AI files is a lot easier, I think, so you could make those too, so it makes the units you want.

Upnotep, you'll have to work hard to equal your last score. Maybe you could try to improve the bitmaps a bit, that would help.

@ Mero: I'd like to betatest, though I don't have too much time at the moment.

Borruma had to wait a whole month until I gave him some feedback.

You can send me your stuff to pht2@gmx.de ,
though don't be dissapointed if Upnotep's feedback comes first.

You can make "faces" (these are usually called smileys here) this way:

There are more, but these are the basic ones.

I need some opinions on something. In my first scenario there is an attack on the main characters estate by a group of enemy soldiers. But I'm at loss of what units to use so I'm going to ask for some opinions. Which would be better; the estate guards = broad swordsmen, captain of guards = hoplite, enemy troops (The "The Fire Legions")= broadswordsmen OR Estate guards = hoplites, captain of guards = phalanx, enemy troops =long swordsmen. Keep in mind that the estate guards are outnumbered about 3 to one. I may have gone for the latter but I think that maybe having such high age units so early might spoil the city building part on one of the later scenarios in the campaign.

Oh and one more thing. Every time I have attackers attacking a fort/city etc nearly half of them always fan out and stand still doing nothing. The rest fight the defenders and enter the city. How can I make it so that EVERY attacker tries to enter the city and overwhelm it. I've tried nearly everything (custom PERs and super aggressive/aggressive etc on the PER list) nowt works they always do the same thing. I played a campaign quite a while ago were elephants attack a town in this way and thats what I'm trying to acheive (acctually I'm going to try and find that campaign in the granary I feel like playing it).

Which age is your scenario or the civ which owns those guards?

Bronze Age: Short Swordsmen with Broadie chief
Iron Age: Long Swordsmen with Legion chief

Of course it also depends on how difficult you want it to be.

This is just how I would maybe do it.

For the other thing, on which difficulty are you playing? I think it works better with higher difficulty levels.

Short swordsmen, ay? hmmm I forgot bout them :P I'm not acctually focusing the campaign on any specific age but each town will be more developed that others. New towns (like the one the player will make in the later campaign) will be tool age, developed towns will be bronze and major cities such as capitols or harbours will be iron. I wont be using Post-Iron unless I want fire archers etc without needing to upgrade etc (that just gamme an idea...). So I suppose an estate will be bronze ageish and will probably have broadies as guards. Btw, the mission isn't to acctually defend the estate. It will be to escape is as the hero while leaving a few loyal guards to try the best at defending it which the player won't really be involved in. Is there a way of having uncontrolable units of your colour? I think there was some in that campaign I was on about.

Uncontrollable units of your own?

Only Blind Lame Priests and Mercenaries (as long as the player can't see them). Those units are blind, and therefore can't be controlled unless a not-blind unit stands near them. If you want ranged units, you should use towers.

You could of course also use an ally tribe, so you can pick any unit you want.

Well the guards and chief are meant to die so its kind of a waste using Xerxes but that could work. There is a part of the Instructions were the hero talks to the chief and you find out his name so I suppose the chief has to be some kind of special unit.

What do you think of my estate.

Yeah I've been doing that on the other side of the map using Pine and Oak trees. I might have a forest with more spaces so its more confusing when the players trying to find his way out. Plus the archers (Dark Archers, eh eh?) who are hidden in trees etc.

Go to the players units menu, go to the trees in "gaia" and select which trees you like. In this case green ones, I'd say, some orange one in the odd place. Place these trees in a not too dense manner in the area where you want the forest to be, make sure to distribute the different types evenly and to put in the odd pine or palm.
Then, go to the brush type menu and select forest. Put some of this forest next to your area where you have put the gaia trees. Drag trees from the brush type forest onto the gaia tree area, again making sure they are distributed evenly. Do this until you have reached the desired density.
Look at my screenshot above to see how it should look, in my opinion.

From the remaking of "The Senate And People Of Rome"

As I anticipated, scenario 6 has been totally remade, thus "Caesar In Gaul" no longer exists. The new scenario is very similar to "Alesia", for those of you who played the RoR campaigns. You still have to reach Vercingetorix, who is isolated in the middle of the map, but I kept the timer concept featured in "Caesar in Gaul", adapting it to the new layout.

Soon some comparative screenshots from scenarios 3 and 4.

EDIT: It's different from the other version, and there are some improvements you could make.

1: You should be able to build a TC, but it's not really necessary.

2: One of the Villagers get's hurt by Guard Towers once it becomes yours.

3: I typed in the reveal map cheat and the no fog cheat, and the area at the top of the map should be passable.

EDIT: BTW I activated the learn feature in the .PER file of the scenario, so it must have created some files in your "learn" folder. I'm removing that feature, since it's only waste of disk space.

Andrea could you explain how you did the Gaia extra templates again?

I've tried opening it in RoR, saving as a new name without changing anything, then taking the new but otherwise unchanged SCX file and renaming in as .SCN at the end. It still seems to remain an SCX file, and AoE still can't open it. What am I doing wrong?

By the way, how did you get the idea for it, and also, it's only the rocks that aren't in AoE right? The sea rocks I have seen generated in AoE, but they aren't on the list in the editor. The grass patches, well, I don't know how you can tell the difference really, you must have a magnifying glass. But I presume these are from AoE too? And the land rocks, they are all from RoR, no? How did you know that they would work in AoE, especially considering that there is at least one other rock that I can think of from RoR only that is not in your template but is in RoR grass. You would have had to know which ones would work and which wouldn't... Anyway I'm bafffled

Quoted from Mero:

How does it look?

Swamps over Affluent

Hidden Archers

It looks good, but you need to improve on your forest.

@ Mero:

Screens look nice, but the swamps could have some more objects on them, especially stone mines and trees (do you know how to do that? If not I can tell you. )

Would it be better to lay a marked path of desert through the forest in my scenario or leave the the forest just grassy and more puzzling?

@ Gaius: What about both? Some parts with path, others without. Sounds fine to me.

Oh yeah I suppose that'd work. With the path fading in some areas... could do the job. Thing is, the choice of directions in the forest will take you different places and people will probably take the main path all the time. Suppose I'll have to make more than one.

I have three possible solutions for that.

a) Make the main path lead into a hoard of enemy ballistas (or something similiar). :P
b) Don't make a main path.
c) Make many different looking paths, so no one actually knows which of those is the main path.

@ Andrea:

Borruma withdrawed from the contest, and so do I. Still I'm gonna finish our campaign (he allowed me to do so), and therefore can make the theme public so you can add it to ongoing projects:

LittleFreak.............Hist. Campaign about King Airlangga (AOE) status: working on 1st scen.

I'm not sure when I will get back to my other project about the Kassites, so best leave it like it is for now.

And the name for my new campaign is called 'Fate'.

Which sounds better for a campaign name:

Legend of Jason Varro

OR

The Chronicles of Varro

I know it's a bit early thinking of Cpn names 'cos I haven't even finished the first scenario but it'd help me to get it out of the way.
