Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Good screens. Remember to move the shallow patches around to suit the eye candy you use in water, like with rocks and desert patches. It looks quite good like that, but some of the cacti can be made more visible.

I've done a swamp and an oasis on the 6th River God scenario, so there is only 1 more that I haven't started making yet. Oasis is really detailed with rocks and stuff, and swamp is in a random sort of pattern, unlike most which have a fixed shape. I'll take some screens as I get near completion, and I'll get back to finishing those articles too.

I'm trying to only use the plant shallows for my river banks:

http://uploads.bestupload.com/redir/26047.jpg

What do you think? Should I leave it like that or mix in the standard shallows as well?
(Of course, I'm going to put a lot more detail into it, but before I waste my time I'd like to know your opinion. After all, you're gonna playtest it!!!)

I've had a look at your scenario L.F. It's very good, again, nice eye candy and map work, but two map hints:

Use a variety of trees. You have too many forest only areas. Delete some trees, add some gaia trees, jungle or pine forests and leave have gaps and elevations.

You've used a rather large map again, and most is filled in with forest. In future scenarios decide on map size first, otherwise it is misleading. I thought the map was really huge, so I thought the scenario would take ages. I was trying to destroy the brown guys so I could carry on, when I only had to get the artifact.

Good style too, mixed B&D and Fixed Force. Keep up the good work.

Richard, that is something I've always wondered. Mainly due to concern of having too large of a map or too small, IMO.

Thanks for the tips Richard.

Well, the problem with the map size is that, if I start with a small map I end up with not having place to do what I want because other things take too much place. If I use bigger maps, I usually have too less stuff. I'll fix the tree's though, so it will look a bit nicer.

What I noticed when playtesting it myself, the loss conditions do not work for me.
I'm wondering why though.

EDIT: Maybe I should use medium-sized maps. :-O

Are the loss conditions included in the scenario instructions? If the computer has allied victory, they often don't work.

Now for a puzzle

What has happened here?

I got this idea playing Chou Kung. I though Ingo had found a way to have mixed architecture, but I was wrong. The Quiang had upgraded to Iron age and the fog made houses look different. Then I thought "Well, I'll find another way"

I think they were included in the scenario instructions, even though I may forgot. The loss condition was not to loose the dock, the granary or the storage pit in the outpost. I might disable 'allied victory', but I think the reason it doesn't work because the buildings switch from gaia to player 1 during the game.

No, it doesn't matter who owns the building. Are you using Destroy Specific Object? If not use that one. Kill # and Kill all do not work very well. If allied victory is not on, it must be those two.

If all three buildings are destroyed you loose, but I want the player to loose if one of those are destroyed. :-I

EDIT: There are three enemy players, 2, 3 and 4. Every of those has a VC to destroy one of these buildings, so if player 2 has to destroy the granary and player 3 destroys it I normally might've automatically lost due to allied victory. I don't understand why it doesn't work at all. :-I

To make an AND condition you string individual victory conditions together for one player e.g. Player 4 : Destroy Specific Object for each object. If you want an OR condition try making the destroy specific object condition for 3 different enemies, e.g. Player 3: Destroy granary Player 4: Destroy Dock Player 5: Destroy S.P. It doesn't matter who destroys it, who owns it, or if the player is enemy or ally. Just make sure they don't get defeated or the condition will no longer apply (which is useful sometimes) and they are not your ally. With allied victory off your ally winning will be the same as an enemy winning. I'll send my first article in soon, it has a lot of info like this. I just need to add pictures and fix a couple of things.

Play Budonian Tales, it has a forest that is all red. I'm doing the same in my current "Forgotten Memories" campaign, but with red, blue (doesn't look so great, just mainly pine) and green forests. I also got my cousin to play those first two levels and he quite enjoyed them, even though he's a no fog bigdaddy easiest n00b. I just gave him a few hints and he managed to finish. Ash trees never occur on grass, some trees appear in the gaia list and in terrain, others are only in one. I think beech appear randomly though.

Finally someone noticed my mixed architecture puzzle. Yes, the answer is monotheism. You can use monothiesm by having an iron age CPU with monothiesm, or post iron age. Just add a token enemy with just buildings in their base, and they'll snap them up. Voila, mixed architecture without adding a new player.

I'll do that way: people who are really interested in having it before Xmas can post their name AND e-mail in the diary of that campaign (see "Historical Campaign About The Khmer"). I'll check that thread on 24th December and send the campaign via e-mail to all who posted. People who live on the other side of the Earth, like Richard, will probably receive it the Xmas day.

BTW my tip for you guys who have chosen a map which is too large: What I do when that happens to me, I make every feature of the map (cities, mountain ranges) a slight bit larger. Of course, that will probably result in the movement of some things, but overall, you've filled most of the empty areas.

Good tip bismarck. And shrink everything if it is too small, and mingle eye candy in important areas instead of making separate areas for it. But try to spot that it is too small or large first. Draw a sketch, place some units, run around with a scout.

I've done a lot on River God today, the 6th scenario will be finished soon. But still a long way to go before the campaign is done. And it is only the first part of River God anyway. Forgeotten memories should be out about the same time as R.G, about 1-3 months. Two articles are coming as well. I'll post some screens nearer completion.

@Andrea: is making a bone bridge the same method you do a bridge on cliffs?(Narrow land strip, walls, drag cliffs on both ends)

I mainly design for RoR, so I need to learn which things can go on cliffs and which can't. Either way you must be able to make a great air bridge even without walls. You can have bones on top of cliffs right? So then you can make a narrow cliff side and cover it over with bones, and you have you swinging bridge (without the movement)

Why are these bridges so hard to make btw? It sounds like a lot of work, but it looks quite easy.

The most difficult part is to give the right curve effect while making neat borders.

@Fudgy: these bridges can be made either on a narrow strip of land and on shallow water. Ingo's bridge of bones featured in "The Two Brothers" was made over a strip of land, while I adopted shallows. This way boats could (in theory) sail over it, but this can't happen in my scenario because the whole river is blocked by cliffs.

I figured out how to make the swamp and rivers!!!!

I made a little map and did some sketching with it and wow. Once I read Andrea's and Ingo's tips, I got it down.

First in-first out.

"Angkor Wat bla bla" has been released but doesn't leave the Board. I think it's nice to keep track of finished projects, so people will have the opportunity to see which campaigns have been developed within this "inner circle". As always, I count on you to keep this thread alive.

@Dark_Avenger: I've been forced to step back your status from "Playtesting" to "Unknown", this because lot of time has passed since you announced them as imminent, but then no more news came from you. Please, post here anytime if you have some updates to your two campaigns. Don't worry, your entry won't be removed, unless you report that your project is aborted.
