Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

I like the idea of the collapsed bridge. Considering we don't have bridges like in AOK. But Fudgy I really like yours.

If you don't start with story the campaign will be disadvantaged from the start. I wouldn't know where else to begin.

Actually you can start with "what new tricks shall I use" too, and then figure out which ones and what order, then bend the story around them. But that's only if it's a very original campaign where you want to include as many tricks as possible.

Well I'm putting a big cross next to your name then. Maybe you could take parts of the plot of some movies and books etc and merge them into a new story. Actually as long as you have at least a paragraph and an attempt at a bitmap I would give a 4 for story, but it would be nice to see 2 or 3 paragraphs and a nice looking bitmap. Neither are as hard as designing the level itself, and make the scenario a whole lot better.

Story is the most difficult part for me (not the historical section, I mean the instruction themselves), mainly because I have to translate every thought from Italian. Apart from this, I often hold a vague outline of the story in my mind, then start designing the scenario. When the map is half done I start fighting with English. This way I won't give up only because I can't immediately think to a good story, and besides the map itself can bring new ideas for your narration

It's not what I meant, I meant that I do the scenario design part first, and then worry about a storyline later.(Since it's a completely fictional scenario)

Yeah I think that's a good idea for anyone with language or spelling difficulties, but I usually forget Andrea is Italian, his English is so natrual now. And he uses words I don't understand.

Fire Legion, do you read much? Reading's a great way to improve spelling and language skills in general. I read about 20 pages a day. I've just started LOTR again today too. I didn't start reading until I was about 16 though, because I never found any good books. But then my uncle gave me this novel called "The Seventh Scroll" by Wilbur Smith, and hey, here I am making campaigns about his books.

I love the way he writes romantically and poetically, while there is still heaps of sex and action as well.

Reading is fun. If you can't find any good books try Harry Potter. I read LOTR twice already. Been reading since grade three. Always try to write some interesting story.

I could post the begining of my second scenario story.

I usually start by thinking how to begin. write something then decide to move it towards when the scn starts.

I also read quite a lot. I started reading German extensively from Grade 2 onwards. Then, after Grade 4 I started visiting an english-speaking school and since then I read mainly english although I live in Germany. I just prefer english literature, although there are some great german works as well that I have read.

I did some editing today, just to see what tricks Ive learned, and to my surprise I found out how to do the priest that walks on water. I even got the timing trigger right, plus did some victory conditions and figured out how they work as well.

But I was pleased with my results and Duty of a Soldier will definitely get off the drawing board.

EDIT: waaaaah, I'm getting offtopic. :-I
The work on my campaign goes very slowly, because I
1) don't have time (school :-( )
2) don't have creativity
3) spend my time on something other

At least one of those 3 reasons always occur when I want to edit a little. I did some work today though. I also played around with dead trees a little, and found out they are always placed under buildings. YAIH! What a pointless information.

Why don't we do things like this??

1. myriad(n.) extremely large number.
In each scenario by Ingo van Thiel contains a myriad of tricks

2.ornate{adj.)richly decorated; (of prose, verse, etc.) using complicated language and figures of speech.
The stle of architecture in AOK is to ornate for my taste.

I'm starting on River God #6: A mountain level. Does anyone know of a scenario by anyone where you have a very large mountain that makes up the majority of the map? It's going to be another challenge.

I'm not sure how I should design it, top down or bottom up. I'm doing some sketches for it, and I've worked out the main objectives. When I finish the mountain I'll go back and make a good sketch of the mountain and map, and use that as the bitmap.

So, as I can't make a new thread, I'll have to post my question here.
I want to make a little gaia camp immediately attacked by computer enemies as soon as it's uncovered by the player. But the enemy always fools around and when I reach the camp there are hardly any units left, they aren't on the position I wanted them and some units attacked to early (when I did not even reach the camp). I already set the character to passiv aggressive, but it doesn't work. Can anybody help me on this? Thanks.

This often happens when the difficulty is set to "Easy". Also, check their diplomatic stance toward you. Finally, be sure that those bowmen have some unit within their sight range.

I had a look at "Monk of the Mountain", but I didn't like the map design and the mountain was too small. I think I'll just get started on the outside of the mountain and then find my technique as I go. I was also thinking of having a raiding party, besides an intial ambush, I wanted to add a second one so the camp would have to be guarded. I'll try to start on the map now.

Problem using the Microscopic Map:

I was about to use it in the Khmer campaign, instead I had to use a tiny one. The Microscopic Map comes from the 1st level of the learning campaign, which featured only player 1 (without enemies). Soon after I began to design upon it, I found that's impossible to change diplomatic stance (at least on my PC) - indeed I'm kicked back to desktop as I click on the "Diplomacy" button in the Scenario Builder.

Note that the Microscopic Map file is a .scx, this means it was processed with RoR, though coming from an AoE campaign. I haven't tried it with RoR, maybe it works fine. I have temporarily uninstalled RoR to make my latest campaign, can someone make the experiment, and see what happens when you try to set diplomacy for 2 or more players?

As I suspected. Well, I'll try to extract it from "Ascent Of Egypt" with cpnmanager, this time under AoE, then I'll redo the experiment. Thanks Bismarck.

@Praetor Gaius:

The Microscopic Map is found in the utilities section. It comes from the 1st level of the Egyptian campaign (Hunting) and it's smaller than the smallest map you can make with the Scenario Builder. It's difficult to find a practice application for it in scenario design, but it can be useful for an introductive scenario.

You were right, FireLegion. The microscopic map was made by Centurion.
What I'd like to know though: In the scen description it says the map is 50x50 tiles big, but I was able to fit 16 Academies right across...so it must be something else. How many tiles has an Academy got? 3 or 4?

3 on each side, as any other building except Wonder, House, Tower, Wall.

Thus the Microscopic Map is 48x48 tiles

Save them as a .jpeg or .jpg

Then upload them to a website that hosts your pictures.

Wait...I think www.imageshack.us hosts bitmaps...try that out.

I guessed Wisconsin because it was more populated, I get a better chance of getting it right.

P.S. The second screenshot I like.

Those screenshots look cool, Praetor, however I can't manage to zoom them.

I took Fudgy's suggestion about site where I can upload my pics. But for some reason it wont enlarge, maybe its due to that they are bmps.

Nevermind. I see from the diamond map that you're just at the beginning: keep up the good work

Sorry guys about the size...

This is the Capital city of Novapolis.

I had a massive brainstorm the night before and started working.
