Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Andrea , I've conceived it primarily as one scenario campaign. At least for the first part of it. Do we have an .per that does a hit and run type attack?

The really tyrant type .per file Andrea, is going to demand his tribute, if he is denied he will go to enemy, and if he is satisfied his next request he will ally. so you are forced to deal with someone that will crush you until you are able to fight back. So it will be a matter of timing the tributes, response to no tribute, and the amount demanded.

I haven't worked on River God for a long time. I'll probably do Forgotten Memories first, along with a few historical scenarios from time to time, but at the moment I'm just finishing off my AoK cutscene and planning a short EE scenario, so no news for AoE I'm afraid.

Sumerian Campaign - Designer's log, stardate 53614.8

After three days of work the first scenario is at good point, and being a tiny map it won't take long to be finished. Hopefully in a couple of days I'll be able to start working on the second level. Usually I don't like dealing with tiny maps (I used it only in the Khmer campaign for the puzzle scenario), however this time I was forced to resort to it, in order to benefit from a particular effect.

The first mission takes place in 5000 BC and obviously has a Stone Age starting. Basically it's B&D with an tyrant-type tributing system. You are in the unusual situation of being oppressed by mysterious overlords you have only heard of, and you'll be forced to mine big amounts of gold right from the Stone Age.

That's all for the moment. This time I won't hold a dedicated thread in the SD Forum, since the new campaign has been already announced here, so updates and screenshots will be posted on the Designers' Board and AoE Last Resort. Goodbye

Ah, good work Andrea. A short introductory scenario is good to start a campaign off, and good to get you into the designing spirit for the rest of it.

The first scenario is completed, including history and bitmap. It features the longest victory message ever, however it deserves of being read since it contains some astonishing theories about the far past and the close future of our planet (I've leaked all the scientology-like crap there, and what remains can be considered scientifical enough to be approved by my rational side).

I've tried to roughly outline the whole campaign today, these are the main topics I ended up with:

- Origin of Sumer and the myth of the Anunnaki -this scenario is done-
- The Uruk Period
- Utnapishtim (Sumerians' Noah) and the Flood
- The Epic Poem of Gilgamesh
- Sargon and the Akkadian domination
- The Third Ur Dynasty

At a glance it looks like I'm going towards six scenarios: there's no way to merge two or more of these topics into a single mission (indeed, Gilgamesh alone could deserve a whole campaign) mostly because of the time spanning between each period. Perhaps I could leave out Sargon, but in that case the jump between Gilgamesh and the Ur III Dynasty would be way too big.

This won't be an hardcore campaign like Angkor Wat, I promise. Of course it won't be easy, however the difficulty will be tuned down to a level similar to the Hatti Archive, making it enjoyable to a wider range of players.

Anyway thanks for the encouragement, this time I really need it.

Bye

I'd encourage that, so I'll at least be able to finish one of your campaigns.

(I guess I could finish all of them if I tried hard enough, but I don't have that much time)

It may be a long wait until I can update my review for Senate and People of Rome, Andrea, but I'm sure you don't mind. Seeing you use language.dll files in your campaigns, do you think you'll start using Dark Archer's new trick to give a unit a description under "?" help?

I'm sure to use it in River God when I get back to designing it (in June '07). I've given some consideration to the Sequel to River God, Warlock, which is a slightly more fantasy based story, and I don't think I'll try and design it for AoE. I might consider doing it for EE though, perhaps even just doing separated scenarios and cutscenes for EE and AoM as well perhaps, although that's all in the distant future for now.

As for our community project, seeing that the Prequel scenario to FoN is virtually complete, you could update our status to "1 scn complete", it will give the illusion that we have actually made a lot of progress and raise our morale

I'm finally back. After going away on a course (That I successfully completed ) and I hope to finish the design work on Death of the Morads by the end of this week.

So that means I'll be needing beta testers soon, I know that LittleFreak said that he would beta test a while ago in another thread and so did Upnotep, but he hasn't been here in a while so I'll have to e-mail him to see if he is still up to the job, also from another thread I see that LittleFreak is having computer problems so he might be out as well.

So I need some beta testers. Anyone can test just post here or e-mail me an I'll take note so I can send you the scenario when it is finished.

I'm really lucky my bro put the new one in yesterday. He's usually todally lazy and needs months until he does things like that. >.>

Ontopic, I've continued designing on my project and added another small puzzle part.

For anyone who is seeking inspiration, I have a good hint:

Play an ES scenario (for example Birth of Rome) and then, after you finished it, think how you would have done it if you were an ES designer. I got a very good idea from that, which I'll put into my campaign soon (and no, it has nothing to do with building towers near flags).

Yeah, I'm sure

Ideas don't just come from nowhere. I remember Phill said that the best scenario to make was one that nobody else has invented yet, but where do you start? Playing other campaigns is definitely the best way to get ideas, even though there are plenty of other ways to get them as well. They do have to come from somewhere though, creativity is ironically based mainly on taking ideas from something else and improving, rearranging them, etc.

You were a bit vague, thus I assumed it was for RoR because of the title, then I gambled on the Historical/Fantasy factor. Now things have been fixed

Me too, sometimes. For example the 1st scenario of the Hittite campaign was inspired by "All Along The Watchtower" (Jimi Hendrix), and the 6th one by "The Prophet's Song" (Queen).

Darky wanted to say it's ready for testing I guess.

It's still not yet complete as my beta tester will find out anyway if you want to beta test please post here.

Ideas- I've been playing a bit of Phil's EXCELLENT "Conan the Cimmerian" and while some parts are pretty tough, I love his "Attack of Latimba"and "Vale of Lost Women" he does have some great ideas, and bitmaps too! I do play a few of Ingo's, Andrea's as well as a few others. Most of them come from just tinkering with the editor (which I haven't done lately). I guess I get sidetracked with other stuff (Stronghold, etc...)

After some comments from LittleFreak DotM won't be released to soon. Thing is I may have to start designing againg after some bad news from my main tester. So yeah it may still be another month or so until I finally release it so if you could change stats to working on it would be appreciated.

It's of course your decision what you do with the scenario, I just posted what I thought (that's the job of a tester, isn't it?).

I might send Uppy an e-mail now, I'm wondering if he still designs for Unknown Lands.

*sigh*

Sorry about that post yesterday the problem wasn't as big as I thought and I think I have fixed it now. I'm going to blame the fact that I was immunized yesterday.

He hasn't answered. I'm beginning to worry. I don't think he would just leave without saying a word.

Maybe his computer/internet is dead?

He replied to one of my really old emails a few weeks ago, so you might have a while to wait.

Edit: I'm having a scenario crash issue - my scenario often crashes, sometimes around half the time, other times not very much. The scenario is made using Andrea's AoE template with the extra rocks - perhaps this could be causing a little instability and crashing?

Yes, it does. I pointed this out in some old thread, don't remember which one, but I forgot to stress it furtherly in the template instructions, sorry. I experienced the same problem when I was making the Khmer campaign. As you argue the extra rocks can cause instability, but don't worry. As your map grows and more terrain and features are added, this problem will happen less often. The good news are that it don't happens once the scenario is finished and packed into a .cpn file, so it must have something to do with the 'test' mode. Luckily this crash occurs after your map is automatically saved as 'default0.scn', so you can always recover the newest version (provided you don't test other scenarios meanwhile)
