Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Andrea- I figured since I've visited your website I'd be polite as to sign it. (Please forgive me if my Italian was a bit off there).

Duty of a Soldier is so far off to a great start. What I've done so far is just test the conditions out on a map I call "Test" that way I don't have all the eye candy to re-edit. I can work out the bugs first.

I might need some advice on how to design the instruction map. I'd like to give it something really nice for it. Sadly the only program I have for that is MS Paint. But We'll see..

Good work Andrea. Praetor Gaius, use the bitmap guide and have a look at Mero's website for bitmaps. They are damned hard at first, but you can make good ones with paint with a bit of experience. Post one up as a screenshot and we can give you advice.

Perhaps we could add Fall of the Newbs project to the designers board? Have to put it as Bismarck's project though, there isn't room to write all the people who have worked on it.

Well I've been busy lately and I havent been succesful in the past but I may start brainstorming for a new campaign once summer vacation comes. I have had ROR since X-mas but havent played a lick of AOE at all. So I am going to start playing AOE again to get the feel for it and I'll tell you (Andrea) if I will try to attempt yet another campaign.

Sol Shadow, I know how that can be. I was doing some tinkering with the editor to try out some ideas and I came up with a story set in Yamato era Japan. But Im gonna try to stick to my current project.

Andrea, d/l'd Angkor Wat and I must admit WOW. I think I spent an afternoon trying to get through the first scenario. But I got frustrated on the 2nd one, sometimes Build and Destroy types get frustrating. But I do like Angkor Wat and The Khmer Legacy, a lot.

Nothing really special at all, I guess it has been done thousands of times already.

But if you really care, it's the following:

Player 1, who plays as "The Second Legion" or something (yes, we're talking about Rome) has been sent from Isca Silurium (Player 2 town) to a fort (Player 3) near some British rebells, so the Legion in there (Player 4) can go back home.

1. Inside the fort, there's a gaia scythe chariot next to a player 5 axeman and one of player 6. Player 1 is enemy to player 5, but allied to player 6.

2. In the starting town (red) there's hidden a green scythe chariot next to two brown stonethrowers and a lot of blue BLPs. Player 6 is allied to player 4 and the other way around.

3. Once Player 1 reaches the town and finds the gaia scythe, it'll do splash damage to the player 6 axeman. Player 6 will turn enemy on player 1, and the scythe chariot down in the red base will start attacking the BLPs, accidentally killing the brown stonethrowers.

4. Player 4 will turn enemy on Player 6, and the legions in the fort will march down to kill the scythe chariot. If everything is hidden properly, it looks like they "go home" as soon as the second Legion reaches the fort.

The scene I got out of a book I'm currently reading (Yes, I'm reading!), but I don't think I'll make a campaign about it.

I just wanted to see if I can get that to work because I had something like this in mind while reading.

Anybody who wants can use this tactic, it also works with AOE using elephants or cats, though scythe chariots are better for the job.

Man, now Im embarassed. The 2nd one was easier? I did OK at first, sent Hero Alex and some troops (hoplite,Elephant Archers, and cavalry) I LOVE hoplites especially when destroying buildings. Took down Champa easily, just burned everything EXCEPT the docks. (need to use that for the trade ships) What got troubling was the Javanese Navy, as soon as I built up a sizeable fleet, and sent them to destroy their docks, things went horribly wrong. BUT I did read the walkthrough file (THANKS for including that Andrea), and I see what I should have done. Probably give it another try.

I like your bridge Shadow, only thing is it looks a little optically strange (it looks very level with the ground, so a little unline a bridge). You could fix that with cliffs and cut them off, but it isn't 100% necessary, after all it is a 2D game and making bridges is hard, especially when you don't want to have cliffs there. Eye candy looks great.

AoE Legacy and Ways of the Brotherhood are the top two campaigns this month, well done to Borruma and Dark Avenger.

Upnotep, I go by John Talbot over there. (named after the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Shakespeare's Henry VI part one) I haven't been too active at AOKH but thats because I got sidetracked, lol (blame it on Stronghold, Pharaoh, and SWGB among others)

Anyway I've been having fun learning how to create splash damage. Im still trying to set up my catapults to hit the towers to give the effect of a wrecked bridge, and burned village. It isn't for any one particular campaign. I might use something for a future design.

I've been playing Ingo's campaigns "Chou Kung" and "Two Brothers" as well as Richard's "Forgotten Memories" and Andrea's "Angkor Wat and The Khmer Legacy". Figure learn from the best.

I didn't plan it well so I have to work hard on remaking that level, and improving the first and second level's map design, although that won't be quite as hard.

I downloaded his demo of the first scenario. He has the first one done, "Welcome to Echieia" (please my apologies if I goof this one Richard.)It's pretty challenging Littlefreak. Still trying to figure out how to accomplish one of his VCs.

As far as splash damage, I've been testing a demo trying out a splash damaged bridge, and a village.

Prob is..some how I keep getting the catapults killed before they blow away the sentry towers (Im on AOE for this one) I bet the Scythe/Ele method is easier.

Remember that Hittte and Sumerian cats will do twice the damage before the crocs eat them. You can also use other methods like Eles, a battle, siege ships etc. I find the only time I use any of these is to get Gaia houses on fire using a catapult trireme.

The splash damage is a little more complex than you think. Try making a forest fire like in Memories of the Gupta Dynasty or the one in Characters of Ancient India. They're quite tricky, because you can only use a regular catapult, and you must place it in the right position so that the stones land on the right angle, so it does the slightly lower amount of damage.

While sausages are tasty, you might cut your finger with that pencil over there.

I think I'll read the book again, ATM I'm reading LOTR: ROTK and I'm also planning on reading something by Shakespeare and the Da Vinci Code next, after that I'll see if I feel like reading it again. It was almost a year ago when I started reading it for the first time.

I was talking about the campaign you were making based on that book.

Yeah, I know, I just mean I want to familiarize myself with the book again so I feel like designing, and so I can add new notes and get back to designing the campaign.

I too would love to see that. I found a website about River God and read a small excerpt. Interesting indeed.

I've been tinkering with ideas for Duty of a Soldier, and I found in my copy of Empire Earth Gold a strategy guide with a wonderful article about design by Gordon Farrell. In it he mentions a process of design and one I've been trying to stick to is- Story. I've been sooo stumped on the story. I've been working on it so if there is scenario 2 and 3 and so on...

Here is the story I have in mind, please offer your thoughts..

"Due to the unfair rule of Governor Thom, the province of Krysa in the South East of the Novo Republic has fallen into revolt, rebels led by Lazarus Xerxes have destroyed the granaries at Regia, the capital city of the province. First Consul Rilias has dispatched Generals Titus Caesar (our hero) and Lucius Tiberius to the area to quell the revolt. They fear the Governor Thom will be unable to end the revolt. Tiberius is a cold blooded killer, he lives for conquest. Titus is more a practical military man who has seen his share of battle and death, and desires nothing more than a successful end to this revolt but he is loyal to the Senate and Republic. Rilias is a man of ambition and he will stop at nothing to gain absolute power, Xerxes will find himself a poor pawn used by Rilias to further his ambitions. and Titus will find himself questioning his loyalty to the Republic."

Yep if it sounds like Star Wars: Episode III I do apologize but in Roman history events like these occured quite often.

So what do you think?

Sounds quiet good. The many names are a bit confusing, but it was a good read.

EDIT:

I'd love to see that article. Could you post some parts of it?

I could but I'd have to scan them or convert them into a PDF file. Gordon wrote this article for Empire Earth's Strategy Guide- I don't know if its online. But our Siege Workshop's notes are just as good.

Sorry for the confusion of the names, but it will all be explained in a read me file for Duty of a Soldier.
