History

The review thread began back in October 2004 and ended around March 2006. It's purpose was to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions such that, at least at the time of its closure, almost every recent submission, going back several years, had at least one review.

The thread will no longer be updated anymore as I have retired as an active reviewer, but the thread continues at its new location here. The remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. I considered trimming it down to a mere redirect to the new thread, but I think it's better new people can come and see how things were in the past if they want to.

I've enjoyed my time with you guys and I'm sad to see the thread sink. Having said that, this is definitely not the end of reviewing - People always need support and encouragement, and for the measly amount of effort required to write a comment or review it is worth so much to both the designer and the downloaders. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.

Overview

Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it. Read the review guidelines if you haven't done so already, you can find them here

This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough guage of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.

AoEH Unofficial Review Team aka The Super Heroes Club

It's like a very simple role playing game where you do reviews to level up.

-You must have submitted a review to join
-Under no circumstances can you take this seriously
-You tell me this:

*Your faek (fake) Super Hero name
*Your quote or description
*Your unit (any unit/building from AoE/RoR, or even AoK, or an RPG game etc if you like, as long as you can have some form of stats and levelling up
*Your special attack (optional)
*You can have a custom picture too if you like, or a custom attack bonus

The Points System

Each time you submit a review you may get points. You may also be awarded points at random times for this and that. The points go towards upgrading your chosen unit (getting armour etc, and eventually levelling up).

Upgrades: Simple Upgrades (mainly weapon/armour etc) - 50 to 200 pts
Uber Upgrades - upgrading your unit e.g. Cav to Heavy Cav - 500 pts

Message of Freedom, an AoE Scenario by TypX

4.4

Message of Freedom begins with only a villager amidst a town under attack - you'll probably want to get out of there before a sword finds it's way into your chest. The gameplay shifts to a FF and puzzle style, with some restricted B&D later on. Once you get a message to the secret base in the north it is up to you to avenge the Mastites and destroy the Nabri. Strongly recommended by Nanaki and myself.

Campaign of the Month

The Senate and People of Rome, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

Senate and People of Rome is the greatest of all remakes, bringing together everything that is great about AoE into one campaign, a compendium of the important events in the early years of Rome, and an inspiration to anyone looking to remake their own level. With this campaign's two new 5 star reviews it bring's Andrea's tally up to 5 top rating campaigns, a monumental achievement for this great designer.

Runner Up

The Sons of the Lion King, an RoR Campaign by Hijja

4.9

Third Place

Death of the Morads (Remix), an AoE Scenario by chrisjen_81 (aka The Dark Archer)

4.7

Campaign of the Month

A Short History Of Lost Sumeria, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

As we approach the end of the year the best has been saved until last. Andrea's newest offering takes on a new mythological style, while still keeping to his historically researched presentation and classical gameplay. You will see all sorts of new tricks and eye candies in this campaign, and learn a lot about Sumeria and the ancient world. Congratulations Andrea, you're the first to receieve campaign of the month twice in a row!

Runner Up

The Artillerist, an RoR Scenario by Sick Sid

4.7

This month had 29 reviews from 30 days, yet there were only 2 campaigns worthy of a placing. Luckily they are both very good. The Artillerist is a great FF scenario for RoR where you play as a young siege engineer who is entrusted with the sacking of Babylon. Your mission is in two parts, and you must provide the siege component of for your allied army, and conquer Assyria's enemies in its last days of greatness.

December

Campaigns of the Month

Annex of the Two Rivers, a RoR campaign by FireLegion_56

4.6

Tales of Udrania Part 2, a RoR campaign by c4master

4.6

Campaign of the month for December was as close a competition as ever. Tropper and C4master both released new campaigns around this time, which were awarded the first ever 'first equal', as I was unable to split them. On top of that Rug_Might unearthed a neat scenario by Kyle Leach, which had so far gone without a review. This was a very strong month for designing with the expansion as well, as all these campaigns are for Rise of Rome.

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Tales of Udrania Part 2 is the second part the the fantasy story 'Tales of Udrania'. Vandir now lives with the Haya Dona. One day they find a strange map which holds the opportunity to free Kunab, the old wise man of their village. Play the campaign to learn more of the fantasy tale.

Runner Up

Reluctant Guest, an RoR campaign by Kyle Leach

4.5

You stand on a foreign beach with 400 gold pieces, a body guard, and a scout. You have come to rescue your leader from a hostile king who holds him hostage. The fortified city on the hill is daunting, the pathways are guarded, and the local fishermen are forming a welcoming party with sharp, pointy sticks. If you do not think quickly and chose wisely, you will die here.

January

Campaign of the Month

The Solar Cult, a Rise of Rome campaign by Daniel The Master (aka Borruma_) - Reviewer: Richard

4.6

For those of you thirsty for a great mission to play, here's one for just you. This scenario of Daniel's was a great find, if you're feeling like a bit of RoR, this is the one to play. A new cult of fantacism has swept the lands, and your king looks to you to stop it. Tackle superior forces with leadership and skill, and prove that numbers alone cannot always win. The first great find for the new year, let's hope 2006 holds more great discoveries like The Solar Cult!

February

Campaign of the Month

A Battle to the End, a RoR Scenario by Lennart van Beek (aka PhatFish) - Reviewers: Richard, IICDO

4.3

If you're looking for a good level to sink your teeth into, here's a recently unearthed classic by Lennart, who is currently unearthing some amazing new stuff himself, which you can read about on the forums. Have a play of his first submitted scenario, and defeat the Mira in Ancient Japan, in a beautiful and creative scenario mixing role playing puzzles and B&D action.

March

Campaign of the Month

Richard & N00bs, a RoR Scenario by scenario_t_c - Reviewers: Rug_Might, Chris Mattox, Richard Ames

The story is quite enthralling; you have to overthrow your brother to become the new emperor.

Well, close. Its your cousion. But still, its enthralling.
Also, I need a bit more detail about what you liked and what you hate.
So it short, what is needed to be fixed.

Um yeah I'll help do the review if you want. You should probably just attempt to do one and post it on here, if you want I'll tidy it up a bit. I'll also have a look at the campaign if you know where it is.

@ Fudgy: Yes, you play as Germany in Empire Earth's German campaign, in WW1 and 2. It's great fun. If you ignore genocide etc Germany really kicked some ass, I mean they are only one country.

@ FireLegion: I have done a proper review for it, those are just extra comments. Have a look in the reviews section once Phill has uploaded them, they should be up in a few weeks at most. The main problems with the campaign was that is was a little too easy (Hero Mark Anthony is very strong), and had a few problems like boats clogging up the entrance etc, but it has very good map design and is heaps of fun to play.

Looks like I've found a new candidate for campaign of the month December, I haven't done any reviews yet but this one will be hard to beat. I'll give you a clue: AoE Campaigns, fairly recent.

Phill has been talking about a new review system where you can submit them automatically, what do you think? Would you guys do more reviews if it was like that? I think it would be good, since there would be no waiting between doing the review and the author being able to see it. It would also apply to submitting campaigns.

Did you play it on hard mode. Cuase it harder then.
But I do agree with you on some points but it keeps me on my toes but the computer did kill me.

That's the one I had in mind Fudgy, it's very good. It will be pushing for a high rating anyway. It couldn't be "A Mighty River" because that one had already got third place this month, and it can't be Memories either, that was last months winner. Another one is "A New Emperor", it is pretty impressive, in fact if I ever finish it I think it would get a very good score.

As for your trick, I was looking at how a helepolis/ballista works and you can create smoke with them too, so your idea can be used as eye candy for any map. I'm not sure about the noise/covering the ballista up though.

I played it on hardest FL. It was a good challenge, but it could be harder/have more objectives. That's my only complaint. Good luck with your campaign, I'm looking foward to it.

This morning I just finished the first scenario of "Ronin" by the mighty Phill Phree after having it on my hard drive for almost a year. It's definitely one of the best scenarios ever, and I'm looking foward to playing the rest.

I think that you'll be slightly disappointed...in my opinion, "Ronin" has one of the best OPENING SCENARIOS ever, and the rest of them that following just have the qualities slide downhill.

If I were to rate it, I would definately give the first scenario a five, and then a 4.6, a 4.4, etc. I think it has five scenarios in all.

Thats why I like 1 scn camgains. Put all the hard work into that one.

Motivation is a good word to describe it. Once your idea is no longer fresh you kind of lose enthusiasm and find it harder to design. Another problem is when there is a blockage, something that prevents you from carrying on, like a crash, a lost file, a victory condition that won't work, an incomplete scenario, a need to plan, etc etc

One way to overcome frustrating bugs is to get mad at them. If you're running out of steam, getting annoyed at bugs might give you new steam. Lots of it. Don't say "woe on me, this doesn't work", or your campaign plans will fail every time.

It's better to say "grrr... but I want this to work!"

I'm working on making some atmosphere in my fantasy scenario. You start off in peace, with fun non war tasks like herding gazelles. Then you start finding things out in the second scenario and things become quite sinister.

You know who the bad guys are, but they don't know you know.

In the third scenario it is peaceful again (mostly) and many tasks are non war.

The fourth is a huge battle, and in the fifth it is a clean up mission.

I have developed the story a lot, and I've added a new twist, something to do with the map changing dramaticlly.

This new single-scenario campaign is HARD AS HELL, the name?? The Coming of the Tsiquins(probably pronounced Te-si-queens). It took me five tries just to get through to my gaia little town with no villagers nor TCs. There I managed to build a small little pathetic army made of mainly Broad Swordsmen and Slingers, but I still couldn't take out the main orange army.(Note: I did find that little gaia army at the other side of the river). I tried AT LEAST ten times and still with no avail.

I hate their (BLEEP)ing Watch Towers!! I hate their (BLEEP)ing Priests! I hate how their (BLEEP)ing horse archers and heavy cavalries(or was it cataphracts?) compared to my pathetic (BLEEP) of an army!!!

Then I used reveal map and no fog

And still I didn't manage to take them down

I'll check it out, sounds above average, which is good. I haven't done any reviews yet this month, I have finished Dangrimms Legend of the Stone Mountain, but he's gonna do an update for it. I've nearly finished The Fall of Jerusalem, and I've finished 1 scenario of Legends of Sparta by Gordon Farrell. I think that one will be hard not to give a five to.

Hey...Test that campaign out and THEN have a character assasination of me.

It's a nice looking campaign though.

Okay, if it is that hard I'll forgive you, but if I can finish it I get to kill you and sell your body as dog meat. Deal?

I downloaded it today btw

Deal: but...post the following here.

1. How many times you died BEFORE reaching the town.
2. How many times you died AFTER reaching your town.
3. Did you ever beat the game, if yes, please tell me how.
4. Did you ever attack those merchants.

The big battle was basically

Me(10 Broad Swordsmen and 10 Slingers) VS.
Them(two towers, one chariot, two broad swordsmen, two heavy horse archers, two cataphracts, *ONE ST*, one priest, and such such such such)

Any Gaia units? Sounds pretty hard, I hope you don't have to play on Easy to win. I'll check this out now, it sounds interesting.

You get a small army right before you fight the main enemy, you don't get any villagers AFTER you beat them. You can only get food from fishing.

Make sure you only attack the non king animals, as your cataphract is critical in taking out archers and slingers.

Bypass the green guys, they are of no use dead. Just get to the town, then train heaps of slingers using your stone, and fish for the additional food. You must build two towers so you need 300 stone. This means you can make 10 slingers. Think of slingers as mini catapults. They are great against archers, like catapults, and they are great against towers and walls. Use your slingers to take out the brown tower. Clear out the rest by covering the buildings and destroying anything that comes out instantly. Once brown is dead, move on to orange. You just need one artifact, follow the arrow, and some villagers. I haven't got that far yet, and it is very hard, but it can be done. This is an excellent fixed force campaign because you need every unit.

Hey guys, check out Gordon Farrell's (I may be spelling his surname wrong, no disrespect) campaign "Legends of Sparta" - It's an almost certain 5 star, but finishing it is going to be hell, try beating the first scenario - no farming. I did it eventually, but now the second one is even harder - you are in a beautiful ruined city and you are attacked by legions at the start! You are in the stone age too, but if you are thinking of relocating, there are bowmen everywhere.

The campaign is full of the same style that made his AoK pair "The Last Viking Prince" book 1 and 2 winners over at AoKH

Also check out the Tsiquin campaign (newest in RoR), it's a pearl. Really hard too, I hope I can finish it, it seems whichever of a few campaigns I finish first will get campaign of the month, the last for 2004. "Fall of Jerusalem", "A New Emperor", "Coming of the Tsiquin" and "Legends of Sparta" are all nominees for a very high score

No, RoR. Read the paragraph again, I was comparing it to his AoK campaigns.

I'm quite soft actually. I give pretty high scores, but if I campaign annoys me by being uncreative, having stupid instructions etc I will lower the score a bit. I'd say I'm a bit too generous, but my average score would probably be about 3 (which is 50%) although that is only because there are so many crappy 5k campaigns and scenarios. The two reviews I've done this month are 4.6 and 3.7

I've a new leader in the campaign of the month contest, which is really heating up. Remember everyone, you can post a review on here if there's anything you've played lately. Also if you have sent a review to Phill yourself, you could tell me so I can include it in the new reviews section.

Yesterday I played a great scenario, the first one in Gordon's Persian War's #2, Enter Miltiades. That was a great fixed force scenario, you had to dodge fast firing Persian triremes in a speedy Greek transport, then kill four local leaders while avoiding a full on confrontation. How many of you have played the "Persian Wars" saga? It's the best long running series of campaigns ever, with a host of high scores.

I've also been back at The Kings Best Men this morning, but I had a weird defeat, that began as a cutscene and then I was suddenly defeated. I've also been playing some classic Rogue Spear and Final Fantasy 6.

Only a few days until the next lot of reviews, not as many as last time but they're all good quality so far.

I've Just played it now Ingo, and it happened again. It cut straight to the cutscene, and at the end I woke up and had that army in my control, and then a message quickly appeared saying "King Bernard is dead!" and I was defeated. I don't think I've done anything wrong, do you have any idea what could be causing it? I took some screenshots of the event, if you still aren't sure I could post them up.

I just played "Mountain Maze" by Mark Stoker, and I was quite impressed. Obviously not as good as his Tamerlane campaign but a good scenario none-the-less.

I looked in the sections today for new submittals, and I noticed that the "Tsiquin" campaign is no longer there. I have it on the list of new submittals but it seems to have disappeared... strange

I thought that may be the case. I didn't notice any bugs, and I thought it was an excellent campaign. I haven't finished it yet though, perhaps he will alter the balance slightly for lesser players like me. It will certainly be in the headlines once I review it.

Hi Richard, it would be best if you could email me one or two saved games before that event happens. Is it in the 2nd half of the last scenario? After the campfire scene? Because that's the only part where you own King Bernard. Which difficulty did you play it on, btw?

E-Mail you? With my connection I think it would take many hours to upload a whole save file, unless you want to build a broadband company up on the hill by my house and give me free wireless. I'll look at the file size now...

TKBM 5f 735 k

It's a bit too big to mail. I could try if you really want. I am playing on hardest as I always do

It took me a lot of attempts to win that siege, Joan and Gina kept dying. I haven't actually got a save of just before that, just one where I am assembled outside the gates with a trebuchet and my army.

I must have missed the message before defeat, but I think they said King Bernard is dead. I presume during the cutscene you must have tasked my army to the new location, it seems to be the same as what I had left, so perhaps the unit King Bernard was killed somehow. Are there any players who would kill him? What happened to the king during that cutscene?

Well, I've got a suspicion. On hardest, enemy units have a bigger radius of reaction if any one of them gets attacked. It is likely that the siege on Hardest made some enemy units from remote, Western parts of the map run through/into that camp to help with the defense. Since the Bernard unit was already there, it probably got killed. If that is the cause, I am sorry - all you played so far is lost, apart from the experience how to beat the scenario up to that point.

It's amazing and very annoying that no one noticed this bug after 27,000 downloads, or that nobody brought it to my attention before. The bug seems to be somewhat unreliable too, because I remember somebody almost played it through on hardest, but lost the last battle... after the camp scene, so that guy didn't have the bug.

If you like, I'll send you a fixed scenario (254 KB). If you don't encounter that bug again, I'll submit an update of TKBM to the Blacksmith.

Ingo

Man, you're actually going to do an update? You really are a perfectionist! Which player would have killed the king? I'm going to play through again with reveal map on and see what actually happens. I won't look at the rest of the map though (I presume there is more fixed force afterwards). I'll tell you if I need the fixed one after I try again.
