History

The review thread began back in October 2004 and ended around March 2006. It's purpose was to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions such that, at least at the time of its closure, almost every recent submission, going back several years, had at least one review.

The thread will no longer be updated anymore as I have retired as an active reviewer, but the thread continues at its new location here. The remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. I considered trimming it down to a mere redirect to the new thread, but I think it's better new people can come and see how things were in the past if they want to.

I've enjoyed my time with you guys and I'm sad to see the thread sink. Having said that, this is definitely not the end of reviewing - People always need support and encouragement, and for the measly amount of effort required to write a comment or review it is worth so much to both the designer and the downloaders. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.

Overview

Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it. Read the review guidelines if you haven't done so already, you can find them here

This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough guage of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.

AoEH Unofficial Review Team aka The Super Heroes Club

It's like a very simple role playing game where you do reviews to level up.

-You must have submitted a review to join
-Under no circumstances can you take this seriously
-You tell me this:

*Your faek (fake) Super Hero name
*Your quote or description
*Your unit (any unit/building from AoE/RoR, or even AoK, or an RPG game etc if you like, as long as you can have some form of stats and levelling up
*Your special attack (optional)
*You can have a custom picture too if you like, or a custom attack bonus

The Points System

Each time you submit a review you may get points. You may also be awarded points at random times for this and that. The points go towards upgrading your chosen unit (getting armour etc, and eventually levelling up).

Upgrades: Simple Upgrades (mainly weapon/armour etc) - 50 to 200 pts
Uber Upgrades - upgrading your unit e.g. Cav to Heavy Cav - 500 pts

Message of Freedom, an AoE Scenario by TypX

4.4

Message of Freedom begins with only a villager amidst a town under attack - you'll probably want to get out of there before a sword finds it's way into your chest. The gameplay shifts to a FF and puzzle style, with some restricted B&D later on. Once you get a message to the secret base in the north it is up to you to avenge the Mastites and destroy the Nabri. Strongly recommended by Nanaki and myself.

The Senate and People of Rome, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

Senate and People of Rome is the greatest of all remakes, bringing together everything that is great about AoE into one campaign, a compendium of the important events in the early years of Rome, and an inspiration to anyone looking to remake their own level. With this campaign's two new 5 star reviews it bring's Andrea's tally up to 5 top rating campaigns, a monumental achievement for this great designer.

Runner Up

The Sons of the Lion King, an RoR Campaign by Hijja

4.9

Third Place

Death of the Morads (Remix), an AoE Scenario by chrisjen_81 (aka The Dark Archer)

4.7

Campaign of the Month

A Short History Of Lost Sumeria, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

As we approach the end of the year the best has been saved until last. Andrea's newest offering takes on a new mythological style, while still keeping to his historically researched presentation and classical gameplay. You will see all sorts of new tricks and eye candies in this campaign, and learn a lot about Sumeria and the ancient world. Congratulations Andrea, you're the first to receieve campaign of the month twice in a row!

Runner Up

The Artillerist, an RoR Scenario by Sick Sid

4.7

This month had 29 reviews from 30 days, yet there were only 2 campaigns worthy of a placing. Luckily they are both very good. The Artillerist is a great FF scenario for RoR where you play as a young siege engineer who is entrusted with the sacking of Babylon. Your mission is in two parts, and you must provide the siege component of for your allied army, and conquer Assyria's enemies in its last days of greatness.

December

Campaigns of the Month

Annex of the Two Rivers, a RoR campaign by FireLegion_56

4.6

Tales of Udrania Part 2, a RoR campaign by c4master

4.6

Campaign of the month for December was as close a competition as ever. Tropper and C4master both released new campaigns around this time, which were awarded the first ever 'first equal', as I was unable to split them. On top of that Rug_Might unearthed a neat scenario by Kyle Leach, which had so far gone without a review. This was a very strong month for designing with the expansion as well, as all these campaigns are for Rise of Rome.

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Tales of Udrania Part 2 is the second part the the fantasy story 'Tales of Udrania'. Vandir now lives with the Haya Dona. One day they find a strange map which holds the opportunity to free Kunab, the old wise man of their village. Play the campaign to learn more of the fantasy tale.

Runner Up

Reluctant Guest, an RoR campaign by Kyle Leach

4.5

You stand on a foreign beach with 400 gold pieces, a body guard, and a scout. You have come to rescue your leader from a hostile king who holds him hostage. The fortified city on the hill is daunting, the pathways are guarded, and the local fishermen are forming a welcoming party with sharp, pointy sticks. If you do not think quickly and chose wisely, you will die here.

January

Campaign of the Month

The Solar Cult, a Rise of Rome campaign by Daniel The Master (aka Borruma_) - Reviewer: Richard

4.6

For those of you thirsty for a great mission to play, here's one for just you. This scenario of Daniel's was a great find, if you're feeling like a bit of RoR, this is the one to play. A new cult of fantacism has swept the lands, and your king looks to you to stop it. Tackle superior forces with leadership and skill, and prove that numbers alone cannot always win. The first great find for the new year, let's hope 2006 holds more great discoveries like The Solar Cult!

February

Campaign of the Month

A Battle to the End, a RoR Scenario by Lennart van Beek (aka PhatFish) - Reviewers: Richard, IICDO

4.3

If you're looking for a good level to sink your teeth into, here's a recently unearthed classic by Lennart, who is currently unearthing some amazing new stuff himself, which you can read about on the forums. Have a play of his first submitted scenario, and defeat the Mira in Ancient Japan, in a beautiful and creative scenario mixing role playing puzzles and B&D action.

March

Campaign of the Month

Richard & N00bs, a RoR Scenario by scenario_t_c - Reviewers: Rug_Might, Chris Mattox, Richard Ames

Ah, I see. You might have been scouting too much. I think what triggers the red attack is to encounter the orange units, even though I'm not quite sure how this works. Maybe it was just a coincidence. But when I played, the red enemy only started attacking when I had killed the orange scouts.

And you have an AOE Edition which has both AOE and ROR, but is not the Gold Edition you say? Could you look so we can be sure?

@ Andrea: I didn't make any progress yet since last weekend, but you can of course await a review from me too.

Don't try to block the whole river straight away start off by walling yourself in and slowly build your way out. I actually found the first scenario to be really fun because you had the pressure of the gold and the time but sadly I haven't been bothered to beat scn 2 yet I'll finish Rise of the robpeople sometime and review that then I may go on with MotGD or ASHoLS or I'll start on the Rise of Egypt.

I took at least ten attempts to beat the first level, but this isn't that much. As long as I still enjoy the level I don't mind how many attempts it takes.

Edit: I've reviewed Annex of the Two Rivers

Rug_Might: What was the story with the RoF review? Did he ask you to remove the review or something? I thought it was going to be quite good but it sounds like it was just another level like the rest of them. The whole RoF saga just seems to keep going forever (like the campaign :P

From what I read in the description it even sounds like Nick has given himself and his mate starring roles in the story (very modest

To be honest I don't really want to play it... Where's Freddie when I need him!

Also, note

I felt the player should lose if they lost all their villies here.

Put your money were your mouth is. There is now way this can be done. Cuase at the start you have no villes. At the end you don't need them.
I could set it you lose if one of them dies. But thats a bit harsh.

I noticed in many reviews people get hammed for this sort of thing. Even though it impossible to do.

Good to hear you'll update, the score will probably go up a little with a few small changes.

The villager thing is by no means impossible. You set one players VC to killing all six (six lots of destroy specific object). If you want to remove the loss condition when they have built your wonder it may possible too, though thinking about it it would be unlikely. Even if it's not I think it would be better that you had to keep one alive, especially for at the beginning where the player first gets them.

DA: You really need to get the HG peeps to build in a stat monitoring program like they did with the profile data... I doubt they would do it any time soon though.

I decided, on my own, yhat it was one of the harshest, unjust reviews I've done yet. It probably deserves more than a 1.6 or something.

I really should find some of my old reviews and update them with more lenience.

How would it work?

Also we should get started if we are going to do some awards for the end of the year. Like inform people that we are accepting nominations for different sections then we will need a judging group (I suggest The Super Heroes Club and possibly a guest judge) then finally we can have the awards with people making great speechs and everything like that or we can just make fun of those sorts of things.

Sumerian campaign updated. Please check it and let me know if that problem in level 3 has been solved. At the end it turned out to be a very silly bug which had nothing to do with the Gold Edition or anything. For some mysterious reason, during the last update (which was needed to fix another bug spotted by Richard in the same level) I unconsciously changed the red player's .per to "Loyal_ally" and his diplomatic stance. I always use the Scenario Builder via hotkeys, so apparently I was thinking to be editing player 5, while I ended up hitting '2' and making the bad guy a sitting duck. Shame on me! Now I hope you guys will be finally able to enjoy the Flood scenario

I better finish my review for Rise of the robpeople but I've been shooting all day so I've had no time today, but I've started it and I'll finish it today or tomorrow. Anyway I think we should have a group of people replay the campaigns of the months to find which is considered the Campaign of the Year.

Sent you a mail about the campaign Tropper. Don't forget about FoN now will you?

I think I'd be one of the only people who has played all the campaign of the months (correct me if I'm wrong of course, anyone). That's what makes it tricky to collect votes on it, if people haven't played all the campaigns. I still don't know if it's the best idea to do it by votes or just by ratings and such. I'll post about it in the main post though, hopefully tonight.

What I'm saying Rich is get a bunch of people e.g. You, LittleFreak, Rug_Might and Nanaki to go though and play all of the number one campaigns of the mouth then rate them from 1-12 and 1 being the best 12 the worst then add all the numbers up and the campaign with the lowest number will be the campagin of the year. That way you get variation and it's more fair.

Also you still need to explain to me how you think the review recording system should work.

I don't think those people have time to play all the campaigns though, and some campaigns that won campaign of the month aren't as good as others that got 3rd place. What I've done is create a short list above for the first three categories. People can have a look at those, see if there are any more they would like added, and then say which they think is the best and why. Once I've posted the whole lot up we can have a talk about it and see where we end up.

The Best of 2005?

The year is at an end, and it’s been arguably the best year on record, with some discoveries that have revolutionized designing for AoE and some campaigns that have set new standards in scenario design. Let’s take a look at some of the best this year has to offer.

Best campaign?

Tales of Udrania 2
A Short History Of Lost Sumeria
When In Rome
The Beginnings of an Empire.
Annex of Two Rivers

Best Remake (Should we have a separate category for this?)

The Senate And People Of Rome (updated)
Ways of the Brotherhoods (redux)
Death of the Morads (Remix)

Best new campaign from before this year?

The Last Of The 43rd Platoon
Dar-Sarvastus: Wizard of Death (Demo)
The Quest
The Longbowmen
Conan of Cimmeria
The Artillerist
The Sons of the Lion King
Message Of Freedom
A New Emperor

Best campaign:

Tales of Udrania 2: I didn't finish it yet, but definitely liked what I have played so far.
A Short History of Lost Sumeria: Haven't finished yet either. A very good typical Andrea Rosa campaign. Even though it can't reach Memories of the Gupta Dynasty in my opinion.
When in Rome: Awesome Single Scenario Campaign. Probably my favourite.
The Beginnings of an Empire: Played, gave up after a few minutes.
Annex of Two Rivers: Haven't played yet.

Best Remake:

The Senate and People of Rome: Haven't played.
Ways of the Brotherhoods: I really liked this one. Too bad Borruma isn't around anymore.
Death of the Morads: A very tactical fixed force scenario. Liked it a lot.

Best new campaign from before this year:

The only one I played was the New Emperor I think. It was quite good though.

Anyways, I choose the following:

Best campaign: When in Rome
Best Remake: Ways of the Brotherhoods (though Death of the Morads came close)
Best campaign from before this year: undecided, as I only know two of them.

Why isn't Characters of Ancient India in the list for best campaign though?

@ Andrea: There are editor hotkeys? Which? I'll replay the scenario soon.

All units can be selected by hitting their initial letter. When I have to put Villagers I type 'v' instead of scrolling the units list with the mouse. For rocks I type '0' (Gaia) then 'r'. Then, when I edit players properties I type '1', '2' and so on.

I have one question to Andrea. What does the language.dll actually change? For me, it did only make everything English it seems. Mor Havoc is still the same, and I think Xerxes (or whichever hero it was in the fourth scenario) wasn't renamed to Gilgamesh either.

Anyways, I'll start again on the campaign. Replaying the third scenario again and then continuing from my save in the fourth mission feels a bit strange. And I still have to beat Elam in the second mission.

Quoted from Richard Ames:

The Best of 2005?

The year is at an end, and it’s been arguably the best year on record, with some discoveries that have revolutionized designing for AoE and some campaigns that have set new standards in scenario design. Let’s take a look at some of the best this year has to offer.

I believe this is just a simply try to make us do more reviews

Anyway, with me it works. I'm going to try one or the other of these campaigns mentioned above before voting.

Now I know what you mean Nanaki.

The red guys started attacking me within five minutes. The other day I played, it took them 30. :/

*edit*

On the second try, I managed to establish a settlement and get to tool. Hopefully I'll be able to get enough towers before the Semitics come.

*edit*

I got a steady defense early enough and could hold them off. Then I attacked the Ubaidans. Man, was I lucky. I destroyed the storage pit just when the Annunaki asked for tribute and I didn't have enough.

It renames 12 units or so. I have just tried and it works fine, and I haven't touched it during the update. Perhaps you have restored the original one or you have put the edited dll in the wrong place; a common mistake is in the 'data' folder (it happened to me more than once), while it must be installed in the main folder.

No renamed units appear in level 1 and 2.

Hero Corlis = Enkidu (level 4)
Hero Xerxes = Gilgamesh (4)
Hero Mor Havoc = Utnapishtim (3)
Black Rider = Thunder God (3)

Also, to be absolutely sure, check the dll properties: it was edited last 29 october 2005.

I just played "Beginnings Of An Empire" from FireLegion_56. He has done a great job again. Maybe this will be my favorite campaign 2005...

I also did a review. I came to the same score as you did, Rich except that I think balance was perfect while instructions were only next-to-perfect

I see you are staying one review ahead of me Nanaki. But don't worry I'll get to 20 soon but by then you'll be at 22, oh well at this rate we'll be ahead of LittleFreak by the end of January. I moving on to some RoR scns today but we still need more reviews for AoE cpns so we can get over 50% currently we are at 49%.

It may not be an AoE campaign, but I quickly went over blizzardius' first scenario.

I should try and find something AoE related that looks or sounds promising.

RoR & AoE scns are acceptible but RoR cpns are currently sitting on 56% reviewed and there are 111 still to review.

Rug_Might: The thing is that scenario will be removed shortly, so you should keep a copy of your review and play the second scenario of part 2, then review it. It makes it too difficult to try to review if a scenario is sent in one at a time with the previous scenarios included in every new submission, since you're kind of reviewing the same thing over and over.

Finished the second scenario.

This time, getting Kis under control went along quickly and I soon had finished them off. I also destroyed Elam and built both towers before I upgraded to ballista tower.

I'm proud of myself now.

I don't understand this. What does this category say? Best campaign which was reviewed in 2005 but is older than 2005? Or best camapign which is older than 2005?

Yes, but Andrea has made about 15 scenarios this year, and Rich only one, so it's hard to say Rich is the better designer in 2005.

An island of Fish has been reviewed, and my crappy review for Into the Lion's Den has been updated. Someone else can cover Kazani Chronicles, please!

Hi everyone, I've finished the list for the 2005 best of, with the 'best trick/discovery' section. I'll make a separate topic for it soon.

Haven't played any AoE for a while, but I've been going hard on a utility for EE for a couple of days.
