History

The review thread began back in October 2004 and ended around March 2006. It's purpose was to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions such that, at least at the time of its closure, almost every recent submission, going back several years, had at least one review.

The thread will no longer be updated anymore as I have retired as an active reviewer, but the thread continues at its new location here. The remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. I considered trimming it down to a mere redirect to the new thread, but I think it's better new people can come and see how things were in the past if they want to.

I've enjoyed my time with you guys and I'm sad to see the thread sink. Having said that, this is definitely not the end of reviewing - People always need support and encouragement, and for the measly amount of effort required to write a comment or review it is worth so much to both the designer and the downloaders. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.

Overview

Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it. Read the review guidelines if you haven't done so already, you can find them here

This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough guage of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.

AoEH Unofficial Review Team aka The Super Heroes Club

It's like a very simple role playing game where you do reviews to level up.

-You must have submitted a review to join
-Under no circumstances can you take this seriously
-You tell me this:

*Your faek (fake) Super Hero name
*Your quote or description
*Your unit (any unit/building from AoE/RoR, or even AoK, or an RPG game etc if you like, as long as you can have some form of stats and levelling up
*Your special attack (optional)
*You can have a custom picture too if you like, or a custom attack bonus

The Points System

Each time you submit a review you may get points. You may also be awarded points at random times for this and that. The points go towards upgrading your chosen unit (getting armour etc, and eventually levelling up).

Upgrades: Simple Upgrades (mainly weapon/armour etc) - 50 to 200 pts
Uber Upgrades - upgrading your unit e.g. Cav to Heavy Cav - 500 pts

Message of Freedom, an AoE Scenario by TypX

4.4

Message of Freedom begins with only a villager amidst a town under attack - you'll probably want to get out of there before a sword finds it's way into your chest. The gameplay shifts to a FF and puzzle style, with some restricted B&D later on. Once you get a message to the secret base in the north it is up to you to avenge the Mastites and destroy the Nabri. Strongly recommended by Nanaki and myself.

Campaign of the Month

The Senate and People of Rome, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

Senate and People of Rome is the greatest of all remakes, bringing together everything that is great about AoE into one campaign, a compendium of the important events in the early years of Rome, and an inspiration to anyone looking to remake their own level. With this campaign's two new 5 star reviews it bring's Andrea's tally up to 5 top rating campaigns, a monumental achievement for this great designer.

Runner Up

The Sons of the Lion King, an RoR Campaign by Hijja

4.9

Third Place

Death of the Morads (Remix), an AoE Scenario by chrisjen_81 (aka The Dark Archer)

4.7

November

Campaign of the Month

A Short History Of Lost Sumeria, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

As we approach the end of the year the best has been saved until last. Andrea's newest offering takes on a new mythological style, while still keeping to his historically researched presentation and classical gameplay. You will see all sorts of new tricks and eye candies in this campaign, and learn a lot about Sumeria and the ancient world. Congratulations Andrea, you're the first to receieve campaign of the month twice in a row!

Runner Up

The Artillerist, an RoR Scenario by Sick Sid

4.7

This month had 29 reviews from 30 days, yet there were only 2 campaigns worthy of a placing. Luckily they are both very good. The Artillerist is a great FF scenario for RoR where you play as a young siege engineer who is entrusted with the sacking of Babylon. Your mission is in two parts, and you must provide the siege component of for your allied army, and conquer Assyria's enemies in its last days of greatness.

December

Campaigns of the Month

Annex of the Two Rivers, a RoR campaign by FireLegion_56

4.6

Tales of Udrania Part 2, a RoR campaign by c4master

4.6

Campaign of the month for December was as close a competition as ever. Tropper and C4master both released new campaigns around this time, which were awarded the first ever 'first equal', as I was unable to split them. On top of that Rug_Might unearthed a neat scenario by Kyle Leach, which had so far gone without a review. This was a very strong month for designing with the expansion as well, as all these campaigns are for Rise of Rome.

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Tales of Udrania Part 2 is the second part the the fantasy story 'Tales of Udrania'. Vandir now lives with the Haya Dona. One day they find a strange map which holds the opportunity to free Kunab, the old wise man of their village. Play the campaign to learn more of the fantasy tale.

Runner Up

Reluctant Guest, an RoR campaign by Kyle Leach

4.5

You stand on a foreign beach with 400 gold pieces, a body guard, and a scout. You have come to rescue your leader from a hostile king who holds him hostage. The fortified city on the hill is daunting, the pathways are guarded, and the local fishermen are forming a welcoming party with sharp, pointy sticks. If you do not think quickly and chose wisely, you will die here.

January

Campaign of the Month

The Solar Cult, a Rise of Rome campaign by Daniel The Master (aka Borruma_) - Reviewer: Richard

4.6

For those of you thirsty for a great mission to play, here's one for just you. This scenario of Daniel's was a great find, if you're feeling like a bit of RoR, this is the one to play. A new cult of fantacism has swept the lands, and your king looks to you to stop it. Tackle superior forces with leadership and skill, and prove that numbers alone cannot always win. The first great find for the new year, let's hope 2006 holds more great discoveries like The Solar Cult!

February

Campaign of the Month

A Battle to the End, a RoR Scenario by Lennart van Beek (aka PhatFish) - Reviewers: Richard, IICDO

4.3

If you're looking for a good level to sink your teeth into, here's a recently unearthed classic by Lennart, who is currently unearthing some amazing new stuff himself, which you can read about on the forums. Have a play of his first submitted scenario, and defeat the Mira in Ancient Japan, in a beautiful and creative scenario mixing role playing puzzles and B&D action.

March

Campaign of the Month

Richard & N00bs, a RoR Scenario by scenario_t_c - Reviewers: Rug_Might, Chris Mattox, Richard Ames

I'm not angry with you Rich, because I've seen that race too. All I could do is repeat every 5 laps 'This is wacky'. Though you coloured up the story a bit, right? I don't remember a civilian car in race, or Barrichello moving out for a shower...

What you missed however is the way they checked the tires. Awesome, just rolling through. The beer cans WERE reality, however!!!

Hey guys,

I bugged my brother enough so that he installed AOK for me (I got it for my birthday ), which means I'll be playing AOK a lot while I will not be too active with AOE anymore.

That basically results in the following:

-Reviews: I'll get less active in reviewing, but I still want to pop in a review from time to time
-Forum: I'll still visit the forum as often as I used to, just to see you guys over here. (bahaha, you'll never get rid of me!)
-Designing: My Kassites project is still not abandoned, but works will possibly go even slower then before.

Just wanted to inform. ^^

Yeah, I'm at AoK and EEH a bit too, so you'll notice the reviews probably go down unless we find another Little Freak. I'm still doing a review in the AoE Scenarios section (the easiest ones to review) every few days, I did one yesterday and I'll try and do another today.

Perhaps we will one day find the chosen one who will be able to do 30 reviews a month... *looks to babylonX*

Edit: Done a review for AQABA by Grex/Old Grex.

Only in my dreams...

Seriously, I'd LOVE to do that, but I'm stuck at university at the moment, away from my beloved AOE computer. And although my next holidays begin on Wednesday, they're only a week long (and I'm planning to work on some stuff for Civilization III - another strategy game - over that time).

However, during my other holiday breaks (especially the three-month long one from November through to the start of February), I'll definately have the time to do a lot of reviews, if you want me to. I'd like that, should be fun.

I have so many reviews to do it's not funny and to make matters worse the computer that I usally surf the net on has broke it fan and has had to be sent up to somewhere in the north island. Thankfully my dad has got the laptop connecting to the net again and even more thankfully AoE is on another computer again so I can still play.
Also I've been playing The Tai Gun and have nearly beat the first scenario.

EDIT:

I'm still stuck at Lorry's campaign. If I use the rafts I end up in a dead end or get shot to pieces, the orangies are too strong to defeat them with alexander, a cavalry and a cataphract left.

What to do? >.>

The mod has been reviewed and scored 1.5 and I'm still battling The Dragon's Head. Those Ballista Towers are really annoying with there range of 11. Fortunately I've managed to train 2 HHAs so down I can shoot at the towers and then run away from their missiles.

I haven't played that scenario, but one hint I can give is better build slingers, if you can. You need quiet a lot to beat a ballista tower (15-20 I would guess), but they're really cheap guys so that won't matter unless you have huge food and stone shortages.

EDIT:

I hate to ask, but have you tried out my scenario yet, Rich? It's been over a week since I sent it. =P

Not yet, sorry. I'll make it today

Edit: Played it. I can see it's still a little unfinished, but looks good so far, and very nice map design. I couldn't figure out what to do though, perhaps the fishing boat was meant to be a raft? I didn't find any Gaia raft or transports in the river, so I gave up.

I noticed the AI was making broadies (they'll need a zero growth AI I think), or maybe 0 resources will work, not sure). I managed to beat the brown player with the broadies help.

Warning: Spoiler

Actually you're supposed to use the fishing boat to find a villager stuck on a cliff nearby and build a dock with him. I would encourage if you'd try again.

Also, the AI making broadies was intended, however, you shouldn't be able to beat the assasins at this stage (I might have to give them stronger cavalry).

Thanks for playing though.

Hm... that's not good. :-/

I don't want to give up the puzzle and just place a gaia transport, but if he really is so hard to see it will be frustrating for players who don't find them. Placing the villie on normal terrain doesn't work either because I don't want to give the player a villager at this state..

You can put something under him to make him easier to see, maybe a grass path of something. The blue colour on water is quite hard to see, fighting on shallows can be one of the worst parts. I guess I would have found him the first time if I searched the river, but didn't notice, but I could have pressed . and got him. As long as you put some help in the hints for things like this it should be fine.

I've been playing Budonian Tales today and the story is inspirational. If I could write and story like that I would be incredibility pleased.

That campaign rocks, it's really worth playing it to the end.

Has anyone else finished "When in Rome" yet? I'm working on it, but there's plenty to do yet. I converted the Gladiator and stuck him in my party, I just have to remember to delete him at the end (I've used this tactic a lot before, especially in the Mauryan Empire). Another campaign I'm playing is Troy (the 4.8 one), which is 15 scenarios long, so it will probably take me a few months to finish, but it has heaps of story which is good.

I've converted the gladiator aswell, at the start you need as many men you can get.

(and yes, I've finished it)

... no I'm not.

You just have to try it until you've got a good army, then it's not too hard. That doesn't mean it's easy, but at least you'll be able to slowly work your way through the VCs.

EDIT:

I've finished Lorry's campaign, Xazak IV and posted a little comment (nothing worth points). I enjoyed it and would probably have given it a 4.2.

I've began playing Fortress by Kyle Leach again, this time I got very far (I'm currently planning my attack on the fortress).

I'm proud, I saved my priest out of a really tricky situation: I had found two villagers with my priest and two cataphracts guarding him when the reds came with Choson legions and slaughtered the cataphracts. I tried to run away, but found my priest and two villagers stuck behind trees with the legions in front of me. First one to find out how I solved it gets a cake (it's not that hard).

Any progress with my scenario, Rich?

The Quest (not the one by Ingo) leads this months new finds. From '98, this one is a huge AoE scenario, with hours of gameplay. With a 4.4 it heads to the top rated section.

Edit: Reached 50 reviews since founding the Super Heroes club tonight. We've saved many lives so far Heroes, but there are many more to save. I hope to see you all reaching some more milestones too soon.

I've finished The Fortress. It was a poor win though, I had to use axers at the end because all gold was exhausted.

I don't think I'll review it, after all it's pretty old, but I'll soon review something again, I promise.

Congrats for your 50th review since starting the club, Rich! =D

I haven't actually finished Fortress either, but it's a great scenario. I've made a good save though, although I had got close to winning, only to die, and lose much progress.

I *did* win, but I had to use axers to knock down ballista towers. What a shame.

I sent an email to that guy that made "Coming of the Tsiquin", hopefully he will be able to send it in. I also managed to beat "When in Rome" today. I'm too lazy to review, but I'd give the same score as LF.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to all for the nice comments about When In Rome. Glad folks have enoyed it.

BTW, I played The Fortress a loooong time ago & recall it took me several tries to complete it. Excellent scenario.

The Relay is still my all-time favorite scenario.

This is the only site of 3 where I am download mod where I don't have to worry too much about reviews.

The Martial Emperor will probably remain my favourite because that was the one that highlighted the importance of a good story and instructions.

More people should play Conan (shameless plug).

It's great to be able to review everything here, and we're also making slow progress with the older campaigns. There's some great stuff still unreviewed, and we have new additions to the best of section each month.

Nice screens FireLegion. Making mountains in AoE is hard enough without trying to add discovery snow to them. I'm doing some mountains in one of my scenarios, although I don't think I'll use much discovery snow, maybe just a little here and there. It's no doubt one of the hardest things to design well, although it does add a whole new terrain.

The new features are a couple links to the main site (something I always wanted) and to the forums and a new advanced search.
Also about your prolem with the scenario have you got the secret wepon? Because that should be used to destroy the towers.
