Coastal. I like the mixture of water and narrow landscapes.

Mediterranean is all I need. I love water maps, I feel naval warfare is more balanced than land one.

I kind of like Islands as I can usually build up a decent base without getting attacked too often. Fishermen can be useful and trade ships are good later on. I might use that for Yamoto, Choson and Shang in solo games. Not my favourite, though. I usually try to pick a random map to suit the civilisation, EG for Assyrian, Sumerian and Hittite vs Babylonian I might choose Rivers or Oasis.
But my favourite is probably Gigantic with 8 players, default settings but Conquest victory! I don't much like Highlands or Hills.
I'll have to learn how to make my own maps one day.

My favorites are coastal and inland, a little water is nice for fishing and breaking up the land-locked monotony.
Least favorite is large/small islands, too much water is a bad thing in AOE. Trading is an awful way to artificially lengthen a multiplayer match in my opinion.

Coastal, as it allows navies, but still is mostly a land map. It has a nice balance to it.
Least favorite is small islands, it has very low resources and it is extremely difficult to break a stalemate. AOE island maps should have more extra islands with resources. An archipelago-like map would be a great addition to AoE.
