Generally the civilization that you prefer to play either because they're easier, they just flow right, you know everything there is to know about them or other reasons.
For me it's Palmyra, heck if I know why I constantly pick them when I'm playing single player. I guess I just love their villager bonuses and fast moving camels.

Palmyran is the most entertaining to play at MP. They can be the best civilization of the game; my friend managed to make a population of 29 at water he got only like 20 or 22 villagers from them he killed my water really easy.
I got impressed what palmyran can do. Even if their villagers cost alot there are like secrets of the game that makes it difficult to understand and you can take advantange of it.

Shang without patch? that is maddness!!
In my case I can't decide: my mind goes with the Hittites, but my heart is Carthaginian.

Choson is another favorite civ because is the hardest to play at RM. You can do slingers and broadswordman vs composite bowman of course if your enemy doesn't close his entrance with buildings or walls. Also, I know something about the game
which it is hard that swordman can kill units such as composite bowman if they are close enough you just need slingers in your back. Broadswordman can destroy sentry towers tons of them and are cheap you can have better towers than your opponent.
With slingers and broadswordman you can survive a calvary or camel rush including a composite bowman attack. Against chariots only if you build inside the enemy's base.

Calvary plus broadswordman good combination vs chariots. Slingers are more useful against Chariot Archers and also can kill Chariots. The only problem you get if the Chariot civilization does calvary and CA or axeman with bronze shield and CA but slingers have the greater advantage cheap cost and fast load.
Also if the chariot player starts creating stone throwers you will need to rush him with slingers even if you bronze while you bronze from 11 minutes to 14 minutes.
Choson swordman is superior but Romans can have good expansions like saying you can do more farms and more granaries so you can have a better economy. Romans have chariots that makes them a bit more useful than Choson.
How about improve bowman? If you use them in combination after the slinger rush. Tower rush is risky because it takes a bit of time and you can only do 3 or 4 towers.

Slingers are ok because their cheap cost they are the best army at tool age. Not even axeman can stop them unless you bronze and axeman upgrade bronze shield at this way swordman is more useful to kill slinger rather than axeman.
The weakest unit might be the clubman and the axeman their rushes cost alot and mostly fails. Axeman can destroy buildings fast and follow villager because of their area of seeing but they are expensive and they can just create bowman and towers can stop you easily. Axeman can come in handy at bronze age and iron age if you spam many of them against camels and calvaries and you have a backup unit like broadswordman or hoplite maybe.
Choson is always superior more HP more surveillance also Roman may only favor in destroying buildings or towers as Choson swordman can stand more in battlefield.

Now from game mode wise: if it was a RM multiplayer game my choices would be 1-Assyrian (these are the best in RM, hands down!) 2- Hittite (because they are my people and as so always awesome).
DM (multiplayer or not): 1- Hittite 2-Carthaginian.

Yamato I think is the strongest in RM because their calvaries cost are cheap. Calvaries can destroy anything even towers like saying 30 calvaries into your base the game is more than over plus slingers from Yamato at least 20 and add at least some stone thrower the other guy base will be completely clean.

I also like playing Sumeria in RM, mostly in single player, and only because their farms last longer so less of those annoying 'chchchchchchchch' farm death sounds. Rapid fire catapults are also nice, funny when paired with the jack be nimble cheat.

It's true Assyrian is the favorite civ in RM. The only thing I have about Assyrian is that their water map there is no difference playing them in water. They are good at maps that don't require water. People think because the extra speed of the villagers will get you alot of resources it is false I mean there is no much difference the bonus they have only the bonus archers but 7 Chariots archers vs 8 from Sumerian the Chariots from Sumerian shall win because it doesn't make it invincible I mean the difference is very little.
In AOE it looks very imbalance at ROR they don't look so great but they aren't bad.

well I think the fire rate from assyrians was twice as fast as that from other civs, isn't it? I think the difference is quite important, but Assyrians don't have nobility so their chariot archers will never have as much HPs as those from other civilizations. Also the villager speed does help even tho just a little, but a little is better than nothing:1- it allows faster exploration and 2- resources accumulate faster specially if one has to travel, such as when one hunts and the gazelles disperse. I think that's why wheel is an useful tech even for civilizations that don't have chariots. And just as Assyrians aren't invincible, neither are the Yamato nor any other civilization.

You are right traveling around the map is better with Assyrian. Also, gathering is a bit faster when you locate and place granary or pit faster. At certain point, Assyrian probably has 10 or 15 seconds of advantage of passing faster between tool and bronze. They are the civilization which they can attack fast and accurate.
I would agree with that. I like harder civilization because it requires more thinking in using them, though it makes it more enjoyable learning other ways to win and play the game.

Persians got the best tool rush of the game if you distribute wood and food really good man you can create tons of axeman and bowman including slingers you can rush 2 people at the same time.
Persian have the advantange on the first minute of the bronze they will get extra food from bonus hunting but because there are not many animals for expansion is like any other civilization which can't run from a camel rush.
Shang has also a good rush at tool and bronze however, it is like Persian only the 1 minute and 30 seconds you got the advantange after some time your resource and his resource will be almost alike not much difference just that you can save a little food but that doesn't defines a game.
Hittite is really good has camels and strong archers. They are the most complete; they actually are effective vs assyrian if you upgrade nobility and the range from the market.
Egyptian is the best Chariot civilization if you let them have nobility however, Assyrian at 2 v 2 can beat them sometimes if you distribute badly for chariot archers.

Hittite Iron age... OP! Should've been nerfed, losing scythes or ballista towers would've been great for them.
