I've tried downloading it again and again. The game is there and plays fine with sound, but that wonderful music is GONE. That was such soul stirring music! The best of all the AoEs created.
It must be my computer, but I don't know what is wrong. My old laptop plays AoE (Hittites and music) just fine.
It is a Dell XP computer about 4 years old and seems fine otherwise. However, the AoE Rise of Rome trial doesn't work anymore and there is no where to get the download from.
I can live without the Rise of Rome, but not without my Hittite music... Any suggestions?
(Well, I am thankful I can still get the game. I love playing the Hittites. But I miss the opening music...)

Music of the hitittes? hmm never heard of such a thing. Was it in MIDI and for the origial AoE? or for AoE's demo? All civs have the same starting music, AFAIK.

No. It was the FIRST AoE and it was a trial version and the music was better and the other AoEs did not have the Hittites.
Go to Microsoft game downloads and get the first of all
AoEs which is the trial version. It is still there though sadly the RoR trial is gone.

An illegal copy of the game! Rubbish. Not so. Peter, where are you? Speak about this, please.

Hi Peter. Thank you for coming to the rescue.
Life is good here. Hope it is with you.
The music file on my AoE1 disc is not quite the same, though close. And the "Gold Edition" is horrible music, mostly Rise of Rome.
I don't know how to retrieve the music for the trial version that is wonderful. But isn't it stange that the game plays all right and with bird sounds and such.
I'm playing chess on the internet. My latest passion.

I usually mute aoe music and sometimes just put on media player at background.

Sara: if you have an icon of AoE on your computer's desktop, you can right click on it, then select Properties from the popup menu. Select the second tab in the dialog box and add "midimusic" (without the quotation marks) to the text in the text box marked Target. After that AoE will play the midi music instead of the CD music. Don't do that with the gold edition CD, for that will totally ruin your ears.

But Peter, it is a download. I don't have a CD for the Hittites.
What are you up to these days?
