I just discovered Age of Empires 1 and even though it is 13 years old I have been enjoying playing it. However, I am having a lot of trouble trying to beat the AI in a 1v1 random map match on Hardest difficulty. Hardest is waaay harder than Hard and I think the AI starts with extra food. Usually it reaches the Tool Age in less than 5 minutes and Bronze Age in less than 10 minutes. My regular strategy of reaching the Bronze Age as quickly as possible and attacking was pretty unstoppable against the AI on Hard but is worthless on Hardest because the AI already has a massive defensive army of Bronze Age units sitting in his base by the time I get to the Bronze Age.
What strategies can I use to defeat the computer on Hardest?

What I use to do versus the hardest computer i to wall in ASAP and then hide from the computer till I reach the iron age, then the computer is quite dead, they have stopped searching for me and I can just simply kill they army of 20 men easily and then kill them. This works even with 1 vs 7 hardest computers, if they don't toolrush you before you have the walls up.

As you may know, there are different AIs that your enemy computer can get. Sometimes it is luck and the right civ. each time I play, the AI sends something different, like chariots+priests or catapults+short swordsmen. You have to find that out and use the appropriate measures to beat it, because an AI will almost never send more varied troops. They also have bad navies on "inland" levels, where you can defend very well sending ships upriver (If rivers are present). And, you could try something slightly easier, maybe go online and have a friend help you fight a "hardest" AI.

I also have a very hard time defeating the AI on the hardest more. I tried turtling but they are just too strong. Anyway, when I try to attack them they always have tons of monks. Is there a good way to attack them and take out their monks fast. They really get annoying.

the most obvious way of killing the PRIESTs would be chariots and chariot archers, because they are not easily converted by PRIESTs

Monks are so aok... And chariots are harder to convert. If you want to be sure not to lose to many units to priests, pick macedonians, they are 4 times harder to convert

Depends on what civ the priests belongs to. Egyptians reach longer means ships also are easily converted.

Only the lower rank Macedonian units are. I don't believe that the hoppers and horse archers are so hard to convert. I lose them all the time to Minoan priests, especially the HAs.

Well from personal experience i can tell that only Chariots and ships are as resistant as the game documentation claims, and even so from time to time one can have a one hit wonder conversion. XD

If you set resource to high then you also get 1000 wood , 1000 food ,0 gold and 750 stone as equal to computer player.
As strategy i choose egyptian and reach for skythe chariot,
and play as hidden as possible.

also from a defensive point of viey i have realized that the mediterranean maps in which the different land masses are connected by shallows can be quite easily defended even from big "hordes".

You want to set another pop limit? In the granary there is a few utilities for that. You can change to whatever you want between 1 and 32.000 I think.

I use to play Choson vs 7 hardest, this will give a huge advantage due to the extra tower range because the AI is appearently too stupid to research engineering...
Shang is also a good civ vs 7 hardest. Double HP walls and cheap villagers gives a huge advantage for boomers.
Also Palmy is very good because of their fast gathering. You don't need to have as many villagers to try to hide for the same effect as with another civ.
