I copied my last topic here. hoping someone will see this and can help. thanks
------------------------------------------------------------
I just picked up a new laptop and decided to install my AOE collections on it, Its running windows 7 and I noticed in other posts that 7 does not like to run older games.
But everything has been running smooth; I have not installed any patches, nor any custom content or maps.
Now when I try to play a single player campaign saved game, AOE crashes to the desktop and I get a message to close the game or connect to the internet to find out what the error is, I have tried to connect a few times to find the problem but alas no such luck.
I have noticed EME2940820 has a similar problem with random maps, and have tried a few of the solutions provided, but I still can't play that one saved game.
Any help would be appreciated... again.
Thanks

Hello HOGGIE27,
AOE Collector's Edition has AOE 1.0c/ROR 1.0a exe files. These are the latest patched versions of the AOE and ROR exe files. There is a general consensus among the AOE Community here that in this version of AOE[or ROR], the Save Game feature often fails altogether. You can find quite a bit of discussion about this on the forum. The fix that is recommended is to downgrade to an earlier version.
Phatfish recently has developed a program designed to downgrade from this later version to AOE 1.0b/ROR 1.0. You may download it here as Patch 1.0b:

I attempted to use Phatfish's utility to fix my Random Map crashes, but it did not seem to work. I have since manually copied AOE 1.0a and ROR 1.0 from the old disks I have had for 9 years. No crashes yet.

I gave patch 1.0b a go and it caused the same problem I had a while ago on my PC, it would not recoginze the disc was in the drive. so I had to uninstall the patch.
Now it wont load any of my save files for either AOE or ROR
