Both AoE and AoK had a less regional focus about their civs. AoM and AoE3 are on the other hand centered in western civilizations in the Europe/mediterranean area or in the Americas (before the Asian dinasties expansion), and that has disappointed many gamers.

Whatever AoE4 will be I will still get it, get frustrated with it, not play it for a year then pick it up and start to enjoy it... just like I did with AoM and AoE3.
Has anyone tried Empire Earth (the first game)... IMO I believe if AoE4 did go WW2 they could make it work. You would still get the rock-paper-scissor approach such as fighter planes vs bombers etc. Also, I doubt it would be restricted to WWII, it may include late 1800s, early 1900s and WWI content. Maybe some American Civil war, Britain v Napolean etc.
If they went back to AoK it may mean that AoE will never be remade. Probably to make things more playable they could make a AoE/AoK remake in one game, such as using the bronze, iron and post-iron ages from AoE with the Feudal, Castle and Imperial from AoK. Although it may be hard to include civs which cover this entire time span!

An AoE/AoK game?? well the time expanse won't change that much compared to the original AoE (which spanned about 10 000 years) but it is difficult to imagine (and mostly due the psychologic barrier we have in the western between the history before and after 476 A.D). I don't think i could be suited for such a game.

I also like the prospect of ES looking at a MMOG.
Wouldnt it be a quality game to select a civ and then expand your borders against others in a massive online world. Maybe set up some challeges to reconquor lost territories etc. AoE version of Risk. It may look a bit like Rise of Nations but 1000x better (not hard to achieve lol).

Only problem being is Microsoft will be behind it, so would be expensive and provide very little meaningful support.

Hi!
I'm sorta new here, hope I'm not bumping an old post. My 6 year old Win 98 PC finally died so I had to buy a new one, unfortunately all it had was Vista. I read all the warnings about using compatibility mode, UAC, screen size, downloading new drivers, service packs and updates, dual boot machines, etc. Then I stuck in my old AoE CD, installed the game, didn't use any compatibility mode or any of the other tweaks, and it played perfect right outta the box. Am I doing anything wrong?
thanks!
