Hey guys,

Having some issues trying to run AoE on Windows Vista. I've tried Compatibility modes on XP sp2 and 95 so far but no matter what I try it won't let me start any games -- it says I need to insert the CD ... the one that's sitting in my drive right as I type. I've tried No-CD patches thinking maybe I can just patch it but alas none of the CD patches recognize the version of AoE.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Nevermind, it just started working today... I had to pop the CD out and back in a few times before it finally recognized that the CD was in there.

There've been far too many WW2 games in the market already,

Ya but they ALL STINK. An age of empires WWII would be awsome, because you know if Microsoft makes it, it will rule!
Plus I've never seen a stragety WWII.

Are you serious? just coz Microsoft is making it doesnt mean it will rule. look at all the failures by them. Really.

But now that i think about, they are waaay to many WWII games. Yeah, i agree to make a remake of AoK.
Besides, I think that too much gunnery in AoE would spoil the feel of the game. Let's go back to ancient times!
I 100% agree with that. thats one of the reasons i dont like AoE3.

I (personally) like AOE3 (original) but I think they could have been less monotonus. However thats why the expansions are cool cause they make it a little less monotonus.

Both AoE and AoK had a less regional focus about their civs. AoM and AoE3 are on the other hand centered in western civilizations in the Europe/mediterranean area or in the Americas (before the Asian dinasties expansion), and that has disappointed many gamers.

Ah yes, that's it - regionality. I just couldn't think of that word. I felt that the civs in AoE3 weren't much different from one another. Maybe because I'm Asian - I don't know how Europeans feel about the game - but playing as Spain vs Portugal is pretty much like fighting against the same civ. The game makers intentionally added weird civ bonuses just to differentiate between the various civs. Now, playing as Shang against Egypt (in AoE) and Huns vs Aztecs (in AoK) feels very different.

The most noteworthy WW2 RTS is definitely Company of Heroes, which is extremely popular and fun. There're tonnes of other RTSs, it's just that they don't sell that well due to poor branding and marketing (something which won't happen to any Age game).
Duan! You're back! How long can you stay?
Hiya... I'm only staying until tomorrow. I just came back from Thailand on Thursday, but I'm flying off to Taiwan on Monday night, coming back only on 7 May.

Sure man. After I come back from Taiwan I'll have something like 20 days of off from all these overseas trips. Lots of time for gaming and foruming.

Whatever AoE4 will be I will still get it, get frustrated with it, not play it for a year then pick it up and start to enjoy it... just like I did with AoM and AoE3.

Has anyone tried Empire Earth (the first game)... IMO I believe if AoE4 did go WW2 they could make it work. You would still get the rock-paper-scissor approach such as fighter planes vs bombers etc. Also, I doubt it would be restricted to WWII, it may include late 1800s, early 1900s and WWI content. Maybe some American Civil war, Britain v Napolean etc.

If they went back to AoK it may mean that AoE will never be remade. Probably to make things more playable they could make a AoE/AoK remake in one game, such as using the bronze, iron and post-iron ages from AoE with the Feudal, Castle and Imperial from AoK. Although it may be hard to include civs which cover this entire time span!

An AoE/AoK game?? well the time expanse won't change that much compared to the original AoE (which spanned about 10 000 years) but it is difficult to imagine (and mostly due the psychologic barrier we have in the western between the history before and after 476 A.D). I don't think i could be suited for such a game.

Just hope that for the small chance that they do remake AoE, it's not as complicated as this.

I'm stuck with the ideas and overall gameplay of the original, old AoE/RoR. If they (ES) want to do a remake just do the appropriatechanges in the graphics, artificial intelligence and but mostly downgrade the siege. As a bonus they could add some new units, upgrades and buildings (if they want) and let the game mostly as it is, with the original units, civilizations, and technologies.

If they were to make a remake, i would include this stuff..

- new units and buildings
- new techs
- triggers system in editor
- perhaps graphics?
- new game modes (not just RM and DM)
- new terrains in editor

pkus alot more people would probly mention. but the main thing would be more units, techs and buildings.

Heh, I just thought of all the other ones you said. But those ones would be nice too, especially giving each civ (or at least graphic group) a unique building with various uses (it could replace the academy).

I also like the prospect of ES looking at a MMOG.

Wouldnt it be a quality game to select a civ and then expand your borders against others in a massive online world. Maybe set up some challeges to reconquor lost territories etc. AoE version of Risk. It may look a bit like Rise of Nations but 1000x better (not hard to achieve lol).

Only problem being is Microsoft will be behind it, so would be expensive and provide very little meaningful support.

Don't you diss RON.

RCM, what the heck are you doing in the AoE forums? Have you abandoned us? Don't leave AoMH!!!

BTW, didn't mean to diss your game. I personally love AOE, and consider it far superior to AOE3. I was just.. shocked that other people were still playing it. I haven't played an AOE multiplayer in years, and had no idea it was still used by so many people.

Thought I'd come back and let you know I got sorted after trying all sorts of things (see reply #1)

After googling I found that quite a few people had the same problem and were blaming Vista. Common denominator seemed to be the Radeon HD2400 card, but we all had the most recent drivers, etc.

Until now.

ATI driver 8.476.0.0 dated 28 March did the trick for me. I'd already uninstalled AoE - re-installing it defaulted to XP compatibility mode but I didn't have to do anything about UAC permissions, command line options or any other suggested fixes I've come across.

So it's ATI's fault, not Vista's. Funny I had no problems with Caesar III/IV, Pharoah, Emperor, CivCity Rome, Civ III or Empire Earth II. Oh, well.

Thought I'd share that in case anyone else has same problem.

Hi!

I'm sorta new here, hope I'm not bumping an old post. My 6 year old Win 98 PC finally died so I had to buy a new one, unfortunately all it had was Vista. I read all the warnings about using compatibility mode, UAC, screen size, downloading new drivers, service packs and updates, dual boot machines, etc. Then I stuck in my old AoE CD, installed the game, didn't use any compatibility mode or any of the other tweaks, and it played perfect right outta the box. Am I doing anything wrong?

thanks!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Still though, if all it had was Vista you'd be better off trying another store.
