Have you used AOE on this computer before?

Ouch. Looks like you've tried it all - what kind of error do you get?

I did have AOE working on this at one point. I am not sure if perhaps one of the 1000's of MS updates caused the jones-ing of the software. I get no error messages, I just get a black screen instead of the menu screen and it is not responding anymore I have to use task manager to end the process.

Sounds like a Windoze problem. Do you have an NT Service Pack?

Tried the compatibility mode function?

I fear is a known lack of compatibility with WinXP. A friend of mines has XP and can't play AoE/AoK just like you.

I somewhere heard that the Gold Edition fixes this, but I'm not sure.

The problem is the updated nvida drivers. Reinstall the original drivers and you should be fine.

There is absolutely no problem with XP (Home or Pro).

Please get and install the latest video drivers for you video card and make sure that you sound card drivers are also current.

As an extra safety, download and intall the latest DirectX drivers (version 9.0c) from the Microsoft site.

You can also reinstall AoE and RoR without any loss of saved games, settings, etc.

This will do it.
