What makes a campaign a really good campaign? For me a good campaign is one I enjoy and that offers me a challenge instead of just frustration. But I'm not sure just what elements make it that way.

My favorites are Holy Man, Opening Moves (AoE trial), and the 2nd scn. in the First Punic War (RoR trial.) I have never won the last one, but I love it and keep going back to it.

I'm asking these questions because having recently been playing Crossing the Alps, I feel there is a difference between campaigns - and it has nothing to do with how hard they are. For me when a campaign leaves you feeling frustrated, infuriated, and with a neck ache - it is not a good campaign. And a good one, even though you don't win, leaves you feeling "OK. But I'll win next time."

Are "good and bad" in the eye of the beholder, or is there something else at work here? What is the criteria for rating a campaign A+?

Actually, If you look at scenario 1 of the babylon campaign (Holy Men) after a while you'll see a shallow crossing and some of the shallows are out of place, pratically on the land, which some are, so ES knew about this moveable shallow bussiness before Imhotep.

I'm pretty sure they knew about most of the tricks, now you mention it, but the marketing deadline beckoned so they never had time to do that many. Their instruction maps are awesome, though, if a little repetitive.

ROF LOL - of course they knew all the tricks - they devised them, remember. But Phill is right; AOE and ROR were both rush jobs - for ROR they even didn't make on-line help, that's saying something.
Anyway, anybody with imagination and endurance can find the tricks for themselves by studying the scn designer (and reading the articles by the great ones).
Also consider chess - no eye candy at all, yet it has fascinated people for their entire life - and that for centuries - how many of you inted to play AOE for the rest of their lives?

Well.....I'll do it! And first of all, I'm going to make a really great Forum scenario! (For which, ahem, you guys might want to post in the thread, at least saying that I can use you as characters).

Yes, the Instruction Maps are fantastic.

The Mahabharat (Mahabharata is correct too) would be rather...impossible...for three reasons:
1)It's HUGE. The written version is 20 volumns, and has hundreds of characters...even shortened, it would be massive.
2)A lot of it is conversations and magic and stuff.....impossible to have in a scenario. Also, a lot of stuff related to formations and duels and things.
3)Time...

Btw, have any of you played either of my AoE scenarios? I don't think so, from your posts.....

Where can we find your stuff?
And you won't have to cover all of the Mahabharat(a) - just highlights - think of that final battle between the brother's armies. That might give you ideas. Remember most campaigns are pretty restricted anyway.
If it definitely won't work, you can consider the history of harappa and Mohenjo Daro - they belong to India after all.
I'll post a scn about Sumie at Phill's one of these days - maybe you can continue with that one as a start.
