AoE patch C and RoR patch A (one in the same) causes some games to crash (returning to the desktop or freezing) if you load a saved game file, this does not happen all of the time; however I esimate 6.5 out of 10 times you save the file will not load. This error happens on both this computer and my moms- both installed with the C patch. I was wondering if there is any way around this error and if Ensemble knows about it. Once a file is saved and "corrupted" -as in you cannot acsess it, is there a way you can retreve it, like trying it on a computer with out the C patch?

I ran over to ES's site and under the 'Feed Back' tab there seams to be forms that you can fill out for comments from there it ask you to fill out a differant form targeted at bugs, then to fill out the report (specifing AoE:RoR and not General Reports) and send the Saved Game to them as well...

How convieniant...

I am an extremely shy person, nowadays with few guts left, and don't like to send in stuff like this...but if noone else will post it and fill it out then
...I will

Please post here if you sent it in, or post if you would like me to send in.

here's the bug form

Thanks agian for your comments

Send mine in for me. I hate this uneasiness of whether a game I've saved was really saved because of the patch.

Thanks.

Anyone else wish for me to send it in?
If someone else does not do it- or does but wonders what to include, then I think these are good topics:

*State the problem, as stated in the topic post and throughout this post- like that we highly think this has to do with the C patch, and the sheer number of computers that this error occurs to completely rules out the posibility of compatiblity errors.
*Occurs with both AoE and RoR
*Link to this post and state that there are other less resent post about it.
*We sould also state that we are NOT asking for antoher patch (though a patch for balance even after the C patch has long been requested.) If we ask for a balance patch, we will get no response, we simply wish for a work-a-round or a quick fix, or even a patch that fixes this issue.
*We sould also state that we have looked around Microsoft Support and FAQ Troubleshooting and have found no achnowedgement of this bug.
*I have two saved games (June '01 files), the same game, (about)the same time, both with C patch, I or someone else is welcome to include with the form.
I will also try these to saved games on my moms computer, and check the less resent post here on the topic.

------------------------------------------------------------

-If anyone would like to view the saved game files to verify that the problem does exist- please leave your email address and I'll email the two saved files, I do not belive that C patch Saved Games will work on B patch computers, but I could be wrong.
please don't laugh to much, AoE is an awesome game, but umm... I'm not the best player in the world- oh come on, I never play Palmie!

-The person who sends it in (me or otherwise) needs support from all of us, please give this support.

THANKS ONCE AGIAN YA'LL

Drat - it doesn't matter how good you are at the game - you bought it and even MS - ES aren't so far above the law that they can be allowed to get away with delivering software that doesn't function properly. There's no thing like 'he's such a poor player, he deserves his game to crash'.

I had to set back the original game file to play some hard scenarios so I could save often - that says enough. I haven't any saved games that crash anymore - deleted them. sorry.

Mr.Sandy (the same guy who is in the credits of AoE) did not ignore all of 'Ask Sandy 6', becuase of the first post in 'Ask Sandy 7' answers many questions of 'Ask Sandy 6', ours however was not answered in post 1. That's why I guess I'll fill and submit in the form...

I intend on submitting in that form today or tomarrow after I brianstorm alittle more about what to write, and test the two files on my moms computer.

, Thanks ya'll any last comments?

I used to have that problem but sorted it out by getting the latest video drivers and Direct X. It doesn't always work, but then, nothing always works.

I found with this patch thing that if I play a campaign written with the patch the save game errors happen more often than if I play one written with an earlier version. So as well as causing save game errors it also compounds them. It was half way through Ronin that I had to take time out to fix my door ;-) Wedsaz has the right idea about making it open source, but it'll never happen - for sure we wouldn't be short of people who could fix it. Or maybe the patch itself can be released for a rewrite if they're that worried about the .exe, but then they'd probably be worried that a top coder would get more insights from it into the .exe than they'd like them to.

That crash at the exit of the game, well that happens on my moms computer. (It's an excellant computer by looking at the stats, but it stinks- badly, I can't play one game of AoE or AoK before it crashes, and if I do then it crashes apon exiting the game...)- it is most likely a video, monitor, adaptor- all three, or 'something like that' problem.

Something that I found helps (abit) is to change the resolution and color to something else apon entry to AoE, and not nessisarily the same res. and color the game is played at either.

And DX 8 did not help much either, We have DX 8 on moms computer DX 7.1 or something on this one... (I've heard bad things about DX 8.0 at the other HGS forums, errors and problems that did not occur with DX 7...)

I'll send in the form and files tomarrow, today has been to hectic, with all of the flooding and stuff here in south Louisiana.

***I know it's allot of reading on this post,
and this reply, but I ask everyone to comment,
throw their support,
or add to this topic***

Okay all you critics out there
Here is the rough draft of the letter to ES I will check over, and submit to them.

BtW, on the 'Bug Form' at ES what does "press enter after every line" mean? (like when I get to the edge of the box I press enter, or do ya'll think it means after every sentence or after every comment???)

Dear Emsemble Studios;
I and the others at Age of Empires Heaven have incountered a bug we believe to be caused by the Age of Empires 'C' Patch. This bug causes a large number of saved game files to not save correctly, and when you go to load them, they will return you to the desktop. This bug does not happen every time you save, but does happen enough to bring this to your attention. This bug deters me, and others from playing long games and the only known ammend is to save multiple times, if you do this however you risk none of the files actually loading the saved game (this is the case more often than not.) I estimate that about 6 of 10 saved games are corrupted when saved. Included in the e-mail is two saved game files, one (Palmie-Baby- June 7th 1.gmx) works correctly and will load. The other (Palmie-Baby- June 7th 3.gmx) Does not work and will return you to the desktop. This problem effects all but one AoE player that I know of. We are not asking for another patch, but do ask that what directly causes this problem be discovered and that we may find some way for all of our saved games to always work.

The orginal post at AoE Heaven is here, if you wish to see it.

Thankyou for your time,
(AoEH member name) Caesar Constintine

I like Netscape but I'm more cautious on installing things these days

If it was me you meant by "This problem affects all but one AoE player that I know of", then you can forget it. I had a saved game crash on me yesterday. I guess I had just been very lucky until then...
