AoE patch C and RoR patch A (one in the same) causes some games to crash (returning to the desktop or freezing) if you load a saved game file, this does not happen all of the time; however I esimate 6.5 out of 10 times you save the file will not load. This error happens on both this computer and my moms- both installed with the C patch. I was wondering if there is any way around this error and if Ensemble knows about it. Once a file is saved and "corrupted" -as in you cannot acsess it, is there a way you can retreve it, like trying it on a computer with out the C patch?

Save it to 5 different files. Chances are you'll be able to retrieve one of them.

Aarrgghh!
That one reminds me of a Wizard of Oz joke. You know, the king wants good weather for the next day and the wizards conjures up a storm as you've never seen before. Then he says: chances are zero that we get such weather two day in a row.

I find that problem most annoying, because i was in the middle of winning a 1v4 on hardest, no reveal, def sets etc etc...when i had to save, and then it wouldn't reload...i saved it twice as well, which should double my chances of a successful reload... Still i've got 1v5 saved now, so that'd better work, else there'll be a fist shaped hole in the kitchen door

SBE:
If you save twice on the same file, the first save is irrelevant since the second overwrites it; that's why I said to save it on 5 different files.

Has anyone contacted ES about this, or at the least do they know about it. If not, I'll need to "borrow some guts" and I'll ask Sandy at AoK Heaven, this error really deters me from playing long games...

I could not do it

I am planning on posting this in the "ASk Sandy 6" at AoK, it seams like a resonable post to post something like this:

Quote:

Sandy,
I was wondering if anyone at ES was aware of a bug in the AoE C (RoR A)patch that *possibly* corrupts a good number of saved games when saving with the C patch installed.
(it either returns you to the desktop, and closes the game or just freezes on the loading game screen)

I know this is abit off topic and not your area of knowegde of AoE but if it was only happening to me, then I would not have posted it

I have not posted it yet, but would like ya'lls comnets on it before I do. Do a search for the word "save" or "patch" that's a good number of people who have this problem...

Never has a scenario crash because of it but have certainly noticed more lag in scenarios, I have 256MB of RAM in my machine so no way should a large map start jerking after a few minutes, especially when it is the only thing running - happens a lot with RM, 5 minutes in and it starts jerking. Also on some scenarios it hangs for a few seconds at the start. Ironically this happens on large maps but not huge or gigantic ones - go figure.

The save game problem is a nightmare. It's bad enough when you are playing a campaign and it does it, but when you are trying to playtest a scenario - well, I have kicked my bedroom door clean off its hinges because of this ;-). By all means moan at people about it, CC. I doubt they will do anything but you never know.

This bug seems to come and go with me... The saved games used to hang 100% of the time, then after I formatted my HD and re-installed, I don't have any problem these days. Strange...

Here we have a bug that happens x% of the time for some people, 0% for others and 100% for others, without any indication of what triggers it, and it's on a Microsoft product... So why should we be surprised?

Think positive
The glass is half full

If the glass really was half full then whouldn't the top of the glass have water and the bottom just air???

For you SBE

*If* the glass of guiness was really half full, then the guiness would be at the top of the glass, and the other half would be the air, thus the glass is half full

I have had to reformat my drive a few times ;-) and everything at the moment is on clean, and it still happens. I guess we just have to live with it.

Some of the bugs go pretty deep. Sometimes the music goes on even after I close Windows - and the message "You can shut don the computer now" appears or whatever the message in English is - showing that they don't abide by their own rule that everything should be passed to Windows.

CC: strike "water" and replace with "guiness" (or any good beer for that matter) and i'll be inclined to listen

Correct - that feature will not be available until Windoze 2005, along with the hard drive's ability to generate spooky manifestations to scare the neighbours and your monitor's radiation being able to cook your tea ;-)

It does not appear that Sandy has answered our question... I wonder if he really knows how wide spread the problem is...

The following post list all of the questions he did answer, just incase someone wishes to re-ask or double check... http://aok.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/aokcgi/display.cgi?action=ct&s=90m9ATi3UV2j2&f=3,5897,1,10
