Borgboy,
Sorry about my reaction, I took it really too personally. (I just couldnt understand why you spent so much time playing RoR without updating the standings..). I wont bother you with that anymore, it will go nowhere. It's your bussiness after all!
About the table&html problem:
I'm a complete html and web editing newbie, I have no previous expererience whatsoever. Let me explain why I did that way!
I read some pages about html, chatted with more experienced people like Singh 23 and Lobby, they helped me much (HUGE thanks especially for Singh23!!)
I had three goals:
1)"clearness" (well, one look and you have the whole picture),
2)the updates must be very fast to do, in less than 5 minutes. I wanted to update on a daily basis without much hassles.
3)"cuteness"(at least for me) (sorry for my loosy english..)! I just hate those pizza-style pages with 37 different colors, marquees and blinks! (btw like the sigs of certain persons I wont mention)
I ve made a lot of testing during a night to find the right procedure.
I created a spreadsheet and some macros with StarCalc (btw great programm) to do the "dirty work" (additions and sorting) for me.
Now I've just have to enter a result and the rankings are automatically updated. I know this calculations are fairly easy to do but it takes time and I'm basically a lazy guy!
I modified some colors and fonts until I had tables I found good looking!
The problem was then to put it on the web.
First, I tried to save the tables in html format with the "save as" command. The tables were now in html but the result was fairly ugly to say the least (like your tables, Borgboy (I know, I've weird tastes and it was not a priority for you!)). Modifying manually the htlm file generated by Starcalc then appeared to be very laborious for a newbie like me. And I couldnt spend 30 minutes every update to make my table looks decent!
Finally, I decided to go "brute force" : cut and past the tables in Photoshop and then save them as compressed pictures (jpeg format).
I composed a small html file with some basic tags and the page was ready to upload!
As you pointed out, Borgboy, the main drawback of this way is the "download slowness"! (btw, it's really funny to see that you, Mr.Big (and ....)Sig, are now the chamion of the "web lightness")
The tables are pretty heavy (80k for the biggest) and players with not so blazingly fast connection will be probably disgusted soon! I'll put a link to a lighter, pix free (and Borgboy special) version!
Well I dont know it if the goals 1) and 3) are reached, but I'm very sastified with the updating time! It's really fast! Just a matter of putting numbers in cells!
Borgboy, what do you think?
You could show me how to makes the html tables less ugly and more easily updatable!
