Tired of all these tourney and real strat threads? Me too. So I decided to start a new "The Bearded Tim Show" about something we've always thought about in the back of our heads, but never cared enough to ask: which color is best in AOE/ROR?

Now lets see, there's blue, red, yellow, brown, green, orange, teal (or is that cyan), and grey. Now there doesn't seem to be much difference on the main map since all the buildings/units are visible against the background or resources, but in the mini-map things could be a little different (assuming the enemy isn't looking at the main map very closely). Blue could be hidden in the water, yellow looks like gold, and grey looks like stone. These colors could either be missed when passed by in the mini-map as just another resource, or could have the opposite effect where your enemy always checks gold/stone piles to see if it just a pile, or really you. These seem like the colors of choice for stealth.

Or would you rather have a color that stands out no matter what the background, so that you can always spot your units. Red, green, and orange seem to display the best on the mini-map with no confusion at to whether that's your unit or just a pile.

Teal happens to have an annoyance factor, since it is mistaken for blue sometimes if not looking closely. Someone could let a teal peon walk by thinking it to be an ally explorer (luckily an ally can't attack another ally if he thought it was the enemy color). And that leaves brown, which really doesn't have any redeeming qualities as far as I can see.

So which is it? I know that many people seem to care, since they will switch from the standard assigned colors in the selection screen. Do you go for the stealthy color, the definitive color, try some confusion, or just leave whatever the hell color the game picks for you?

I used to pick green and teal because I thought they were cool looking! I also thought about the mini-map stealth thing for awhile and went with grey because ppl dont horde stone mines as much as gold. Now? I guess I just go with , as you so eloquently put it , "whatever the hell color the game picks for me".

You must not fight too often with one enemy, or you will teach him all your art of war.

Blue and Red would be my favorite colours. I really, really dislike colours that resemble those found on the minimap, as I know that some people who like hiding their last peon somewhere frequently tend to pick these. All the colours should stand out much better against the background.

Teal and red, I like to stand out, the enemy should know who killed them

Then there are those that simply MUST pick the same goddamn color EVERY game, and will actually hold up proceedings (and raise holy hell) until they get their way.

Oh, of course, no one who frequents THESE forums would act in such a reprehensible manner. Heaven forfend!

Gedn's fave color: Blue. No, yellooooooooow!!!!

But an off-topic point about the mini-map:

Isn't it irritating that the map shows terrain colors (tan and green) instead of using tan as terrain and green as forest?

The mimi-map would be of infinitely more use if the real stucture of the map could be discerned from glancing at it.

I wouldn't expect the current state of the forestry to be continously updated but if it would just display the contours of contiguous forest/woodland as it is uncovered then troop movement/waypointing and villager relocation would be so much easier.

And my favorite color by far is red...
( right; off you go )

Morning RoR peeps Another show, thank you Bearded Tim hmmmm the colors....I always have problems losing my men on the map. I prefer any of the bright colors. Red is my favorite...I don't think I will ever forget a beautiful circle of red compies killing my wood choppers.

Some of the guys I play against always pick grey, brown or blue. %$%^#$ they are the sneeky ones! And it works good too! Try as i do to watch the mini map for them, they manage many times to hide!

Whoa! This topic is entirely too contoversial for me! I take whatever color I get and consider the consequences to be just another random factor in the game to deal with. However, red, green and orange have a definite advantage on that tiny mini-map. (I play on a laptop.)

Repeating: I think that anyone who picks any of the camouflage colours on purpose is kind of suspect ... in some cases it is quite probable they'll be the infamous peon-hider kind of players.

Just stick with the colour you get ... you also avoid getting 'accidental' co-ops. Happened to me once ... the idiot started out building a Barracks and two houses, deleted two peons, and cancelled the queue for the other two peons...

Don't mess with the f***ing colours!

Finally a topic I'm qualified to answer !!! Personally I always pick green since it goes along with my zone name. Armagedn will be happy to know however that if someone beats me to it I'll just pick another color without saying a word. I do avoid yellow/Slver (teal? WTF) because of trouble with the mini-map and gold/stone confusion

I ALWAYS lose track of my fb when i am blue, so i try to steer away from that color. Which is too bad, because I kinda like that color...

I usually take yellow, because yellow is my fav color for RTS, ever since my Warcraft II days, and compies look awesome dressed in yellow.

I take whatever the comp picks for me. I get irritated whenever someone else switches to my color, changes my civ, blah, blah, blah.

For me the brown, grey and even yellow tend to be difficult to tell apart. Some units tend to be more easy to mismatch than others. Currently I almosta always use red if it is available. Red units are not too easy to forget and at least for me they are very visible. For the enemies red alerts them and makes them overreact.

QUESTION: What happens if players in different teams pick the same color? Does one of them change to other color or what?

Blue-army of darkness, invisible ships, receding blackness on mini-map

Red-blood red, fear, fire, eyesore, your dying

Yellow-cant see gold, keep thinking im egypt for some reason

Brown-better colors have been seen coming out of the back end of my dog

Orange-does nothing for me, teamed with red for mashed armies

Green-when I first started to play I though that green men could hide behind trees...boy was I wrong

Grey-My men hide so well even I cant see them

Teal-probably the most fought over optional color IMO

thats it thats all

Ok - here's a goofy story, but it is related to your post.

Played a very strange Tiny Highland, no reveal, 3v3, pop=25, nomad start the other day. Oh yeah it was random civs too. I was orange and one of the oponents was red. I got the good luck and landed shang, so as soon as I had plopped my TC down by a berry bush and some strags it was villie factory time.

I pumpin away with the high villie count thinkin all is good and starting to think clubbers when all the sudden there comes a band of 6-7 red villies bone in hand. No big deal since I was at about 16-18 villies.

I send some over to have a bone war and suddenly I realize that I can't tell the damn villies apart. The opponenet probably (wisely) had hotkeyed their attacking force so when one of my villies died in a flury of blows they could quickly re-attack. My dumb villies without auto-attack either stood there and took the abuse or ran screamin to all corners of the world.

I tried to coordinate my defense, but I had such a hard time telling the red from the orange that I kept on selecting the wrong villie (ok, so I was panicking too). Needless to say, my mighty Shang village fell to the vicious bones of a much smaller Carth force.

If I can ever help it, i will try to avoid orange if the enemy has red on their team after this horrible defeat (It is really lousy to see your barracks and TC boned down by villies).

I used to hate yellow, any other color was fine. Now I dont care@all(though I am usually red becuse my compo rocks )

RED, so I can see my units easily!

I'm not picky about it though. It's just the colour I'd prefer if I had a choice.
