This is a swordsman rush I like to use that is based on something that zelda_gannon taught me a while ago.

Rush to bronze as normal (if you don't know how to fast bronze have a look at the fast bronzing articles in the Academy section here at Heaven). The only difference is you are going to need extra gold so start mining once you click the tool button.

Between tool and bronze, forward build 4 raxes and 2 stables. Research toolworking, infantry armour and axe (in no particular order). Once you are bronze, research the shortsword and build four cavalry (2 in each of your stables). When you have researched the short sword, build 12 swordsman (4 in each rax). Build a scout for eyes if you want. Just before you move out, hit the button to upgrade to broadswordsman. Timed right, the upgrade will complete part way through your attack.

Move in on your enemy. If you were quick enough, they'll still be tool. Use the cav to chase down villies and attack the buildings with your swordsmen. Build additional troops if you need to but if your opponent is still in tool, you shouldn't have too much trouble. The most important part is to keep your swordies backed up by cavalry in a ratio of about 1:3 (cav:swordies). This will deal to any tool age archers.

If you manage a 12 bronze you will prolly manage to attack around 16 mins with all upgrades and the cavs plus walking distance. Most players will have bronzed by then and can absorb the attack with some fighting.

But I have never been attacked by that combo.

I know what you mean. I got stopped by a player in bronze with some CA and camels the other day The upgrades, I suppose, could move forward a bit. Toolworking is available in tool age. But then the food will be required to get to bronze ASAP...

I have been doing something like that. I will do a normal boom and bronze in 15 or so and have 2 forward vills in the back of an enemies base. They build 3 rax and a Siegeworkshop, and you can constantly pump swordies and ST from there(unless in major sea battle).Enemy Bronze: When you get about 6 swordies stick them into the woodies, and you should be able to get off a couple hits. Keep on making them, and attack their military buildings and TC. Then go for the pits to reduce the expansion towns the refugee vills can make(they probably would have had low wood in first place b/c of sea and early bronze buildings etc.). If it is a CA civ tho, you should hit the market fast, so the wheel is delayed further. You can take this army to the next town, but i like to wait to iron, for longies and cats, and have them protect the forward vills that are making a new town. You should be able to iron at about 26 if you have kept the sea. Dont forget to pump the fish boats tho because rome has several pricy upgrades(legion hele Hcats, maybe even Cents).

Hmmm where is that wood pit? Hey! Why is my army at my wood pit? ARRGH!!! My vills are attacking AE!!! No! Woe is me, Woe is me!

nice plan, but i see one folley, no respectable player is going to wait around in the tool age for you to get broad sword. why not attack with the cav as soon as you get them? you'll probably do more damage and if you're lucky, they'll be almost dead by the time you get the cleanup crew in

Heheh my version of this was the first two rush ,and i have a scout, and then the cav:swordie ratio is 1:10 (cavs cost a lot of gold in case anyone didnt know.)

Josh in a 1v1 you are committing suicide with this attack.

Potejon is right about the timing.

Any one Shang, Pho, Yam & Assy (if they have a modicum of skill) will have CA’s and Compies melting away your swordies like they are putty before they can strike a blow. (Of course CA for Assy and compies for Yam). That is if you have any vills left after their tool rushes.

Against slower civs you may have a chance… but I personally think with Rome you are far better of going for a slinger tower rush in tool. Start mining stone early and pump out slingers when tool.. upgrade at the market.. take 4-5 vills and tower everything you find ! Or try the cav rush as admstx7 suggested !

I still cant find use for any infantry except clubbers and axemen. Just look at the cost !

Axe upgrade, Armour upgrade 1 & 2, Attack Upgrade 1 & 2, Swordsmen Upgrade, Broadsword Upgrade etc etc !
(835 f 270g) = 1145 res total

CA’s need Armour x 2 and Wheel (you will have to get wheel anyway at some stage)
(400f 75 w and 50 g) = 525 res

Compies need Armour x 2, Improved Bowmen and Comp bowmen.
(545 f 180 w 50 g) = 775

So although your swordie is cheaper to make you get 7 free compies and 6 free CA’s (just in resources alone) In any ones language they are a lot cheaper.. for ranged units with much better advantages than infantry!

NB Just an important point .. infantry upgrades cost the very resource you need to make them Food and Gold ! Compies use a fair bit of wood which you don’t need and CA’;s use very little wood which you do need !

Cherub_Lobby: A few things you are forgetting in your Resource Comparison...

1) The cost of the Barracks is deadwood for the Archers Civs...add 125 wood.

2) Barracks are cheaper than Ranges...25 each....

3) ROMAN Barracks are even cheaper...103 wood to 150 for the others' Ranges.

4) Swords build in 27 seconds to 30 for Compies (small difference) and 40 for CA's. Therefore every 2 Roman Barracks (206 wood) equals 3 Ranges (450 wood).

5) If playing with a normal (ie 50-75) pop limit, the Swordmens will eventually outnumber the archers by a large number due to logistics.

6) If the Archer player is ONLY building Archers, the Infantry armor is not necessary either. IF he builds Cav or Chariots for support, he needs to get armor AND attack upgrades for them to make it worthwhile also.

7) If the CA player just builds CA and ST's, the Roman simply switches to 1/2 Broads and 1/2 Slingers with a few ST's and easily crushes the archers.

I agree about the timing wholeheartedly, which is why Rome needs to Axer rush somewhere in there. You need all the techs to do it anyways if you are going for swordsmen, so you might as well get some use out of 'em. This often gives you the initiative and forces the opponent on the run as well.

Theres a lot more to it than that, but I just thought I'd point out all the 'hidden savings' of the Swordmens as well.
