Mostly local bands for me. I believe its 10 times more fun to watch a band at your local bar/nightclub (many are 18+). So most of my musical tastes are influenced by bands around Grand Rapids, Michigan, or those who stop in. I've met quite as few, as they watch other bands play.
Fat Amy (from lansing, my favorite).
The Verve Pipe (also lansing)
Papa Vegas (grand rapids, on RCA records with a national single and I've talked to people who have seen the CD in places such as Target in San Jose).
19 Wheels - (lansing) originally country western, now "midwest rock." or Aware Rock. (aware records is from chicago, a compilation that discovers and promotes bands, many make it national (TVP, better than ezra, matchbox 20, hootie, papa vegas, many more).
Kid Rock - Detroit, gotta love him!
And another local, Jewel. She went to school and played in coffee shops near Interlochen MI.
other national acts:
better than ezra, harvey danger.
Far, Incubus I have seen live in the same night. (metal).
and I like electronic. Propellerheads, Chemical Brothers, and as many compilation CDs as I get my hands on get regular "spin" in my car.
I listen to jazz too, Herbie Hancock taking top honors.
I must say, I love music. I love seeing live music as often as I can. I'll listen to anything, even Motown. Just not boy bands or country/western.
as for Garrison Keillor, I am a northern Scandinavian Lutheran. His humor is too damn much! I love it! I've seen him twice do his show from Interlochen MI. His music, however, not my style.
