No offence, but rap bites

It take NO talent to become a rap start, just use a bunch of foul mouth lyrics. Rock and Metal are the ultimate talent. It takes years before you can become good enough to even get asked into a band that MIGHT make it.

I have been playing guitar for two years now, and I'm still no randy rhoads(that's for you ozzy fans). It takes absolotely nothing but the ablity to rhyme to become a rap star. Unfortunetly, the black community's only talent was rhyming up until 12 years ago when most of them grew up.

No offence to blacks, just the ones that think they have talent when they rap. You just blast up a beat from some rock start and turn up the bass.

Rap is the ONLY form of music is HATE. I can tolerate anything else, even country. I just can't STAND rap!!!

I am no fan of rap.

However, you are waaaay to vain, if you believe that one must simply stand in front of a microphone with tourettes to get rich rapping.

Have you ever tried writing actual words together? I've seen some very impressive rap lyrics (coming from a literature viewpoint.) Rap is, in one aspect, an expression of culture. They are telling about their background, their way of life, and what they know. I'd rather listen to some rap than listen to some young white dude (such as Bill Joe in Green Day) telling me his life sucks, despite the money he must be making from album sales.

Rap is real. Some at least. You must also remember that just as rock has a lot of good stuff and a lot of crap, rap does as well. You can't judge a whole musical form by one genre alone. But, reading your post, you also sound like you have a chip on your shoulder. Are you angry that "all" they do is stand in front of a mic and scream? Whoops, there goes heavy metal. Or that they talk fast? Whoops, there goes kid rock, korn, and a million other bands.

But, if you scrolled down and read my post, you would see that I am not a real big fan of rap. I'd rather listen to rock. Its a cultural thing. I'm a 20-something white guy, its not my fault =) I advise you, however, to look at rap with an open mind. There are some valuable gems to be found.

DaRqKurt:

Way to spell it out! I certainly am not a fan of most rap music, there are certainly some excellent rap & hip hop songs (and elements of those genres in various "rock" songs) that are most worthwhile listening. However, I believe that anyone driving through residential streets w/ bombastic bass thumpa-thumpa noise frightening old people, shattering glass panes and sterilizing squirrels ought to be locked away in a dark cell w/ John Denver, Barry Manilow, & Tiny Tim tunes piped in.

As to "black" music in general...Good God! Haah! (thanks, James Brown), there wouldn't BE Rock n' Roll w/o it! If you think rap is "just about the beat," well, newsflash, that's what Rock n' Roll IS, at it's core, at it's roots. Man, I love funk, some blues (especially on Sunday mornings), and soul music, along w/ all my rockin'roll.

Word up!

Breydel - i'm shocked at the 'pop'-tacity of your musical tastes. I thought bog-standard radio music was for those with uncultured minds.

And yes, so what if i am a pretentious teenager :P

Me? I like anything by Radiohead, other than just your plain ol' jazzzzz.

FWIW I have always liked top30 music more than alternative music. Here in Belgium, grunge/alternative/punk etc. is as dead as Napoleon. Love it, hate it or whatever but that are the facts.

Eurodance, eurohouse, eurotechno is taking over the music market completely. And this is not sole Belgian. I think similar things are happening in Holland, Germany, Spain, Denmark, and who knows where else. I've been in the UK lately and there "guitar music" still seemed to be in fashion. It was here too until 1994 or so but now it's all electronic music.

And for me liking pop music or not, your opinion and comments on that don't interrest me Wabbit. And I myself don't like Radiohead at all. Back in time when his single "creep" was hot, he got some popularity in our alternative music scene, but I haven't heard of him in years now. Only occasionally when I turned on MTV (English channel hah ) I heard some new material but that's about it.

BTW, I noticed Fatboy Slim mentioned a few times. I like him too. New single is great, so was the previous one and the first one.

I stand by my previous statements, and more enthusiasm so Rap Bites

Now, rock has more than that funky bass and drum beats and all that weird sound effect stuff found in every rap song. Rock at the presence of MUSICAL TALENT. You have to LEARN to play the drum, you have to LEARN to play guitar or bass guitar. And you have to develope the skill and want to play those instruments.

With rap, all you have to do is be able to rhyme and make absolutely no sense at all expt. to the bassers.

I live in Miami where you can say ROCK IS DEAD. To many cubans coming in. We only have one rock station, 94.9 Zeta, and we used to have a few others, 96.5 which is now POWER 96. We have all this spanish stuff that you can't understand a word of, especially if you are not spanish based. I alrdy know all most of the rock fans in almost all the middle schools and my area and some high schools.

Rap is over powering down here, AND I WANT OUT! And the stupid cubans keep on coming.

Word of advice: if you ever move to Miami, know at least these words in spanish:

No abla espanol

And my final statement:

Rap takes absolutely no skill but that of being able to rhyme. They don't even rap to beat now.

And yes, rock and most of the other genres of music around were developed by the "blacks." I enjoy Jazz and Blues as well, but Rock just kicks. Yes, if it weren't for those rapping fools, I'd be musicless, but where the hell are they in rock now? Eh? The abandoned it instead of staying in it! Hendrix was one of the last well know black rock stars, but he made his memory forever!*looks up to his Jimi Hendrix poster and bows*. But, Randy Rhoads was still the best! !!

Hehe, that's exactly what I mean. It seems the alternative music scene isn't so big in Norway either.

But if y'all don't believe what I say, then check out the Flammish Ultratop at this page: http://www.planetinternet.be/ultratop/ . For the ones who don't know this, the Flanders (Flemmish Belgium) is the northern part of Belgium where people speek Dutch. We Belgians don't have a completely Belgian music chart but we have a Flammish one and a Wallonian one (the Southern, French speaking part).

Make sure you have a RealAudio player installed and listen to the music fragments (first click on "50 singles" in the left margin). Then listen to them all and you'll understand what I mean.

For all Americans: take care guys, this could be a culture shock for you.

Yeah, Radiohead are dead, but that doesn't mean i can't still like them does it?

I presume that by 'guitar music' you mean indie, which is as big as it ever has been in the UK. Bands like Gene and... ooer, that's all i can think of. Well hell, it's big AND good. Thankyou.

what about the boys Kent from Sweden? They looked like they were all over europe (as best i could translate from their svensk website).

Of course, they are also, well not big, but well known in America. They toured with our locals Papa Vegas last month.

Kent? Never heard of them here in Belgium. But maybe they're on MTV, I don't know.

Wabbit:
With 'guitar music' I meant guitar music. I don't know what Indie exactly is but I referred mostly to bands like Live, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Metallica, and such but also more rocky music ā la Suede. Yup, music that isn't made with computers is getting pretty scarce here. It's sad though. I like a lot of different music styles but always hearing the same gets boring. I liked the diversity around 1994 when we also had a few rock/alternative bands in our charts.

My fav music styles are:

80's pop music
80's & 90's rock music
90's dance music (eurodance, eurotechno etc.)
90's R&B
90's pop
a little bit of alternative/grunge too, but not too much

yeah, kent is cool.. I think they are swedish, they were touring over here (Canada) with the Cardigans... I also like FatBoySlim, and alot of the independent crap. anyone here know "Ween" I just picked up one of their CDs, and I was listening to a song called "I'll be your jonny on the spot" it's whacked put on something, but it's pretty cool... don't like to much of the rest of the CD. other than that, I'm a Alternative kinda guy, with a little bit of easy and some metal...

On this whole "let's diss up rap" thread, I would really like to see "ese pedazo racist de mierda" One try and write any.. We could put it in Phils jokes thread. just a Idea. I don't really like rap, but I can apprieciate it as an art form. It's like a type of poetry, albeit rather bad poetry.
yeah well, just my $0.2. later yall.

Hehehhe, nice spanish

Ok, well, yes. Rap is a type of poetry. In fact, that's the only talent it takes as i've stated before. But most rappers are bad poets

Alternative is cool, but metal still dominates. Also industrial is cool, too. Those Rammstein guys are cool . Korn and Zombie also kick some arse. But i'd have to say that Ozzy/Sabbath is the best, with Korn a close second and Metallica a 3rd.

Offspring and stuff like that is cool, too. I'm a big Offspring fan . I also like a few of the local bands down here in Miami(i.e. Crease, like you guys ever heard of them :P).

Hell, I've even got a band of my own :P. I don't want to put the name up because it can mean a few different things

oh well, lets keep this thread going...

continuing the thread for ya, LOL.

Sabbath... they aren't that great. They are a lil' old for me. But I do like 2 or 3 songs ("war pigs" definately).

Of those other bands, Offspring seem too damn 12-year-old oriented now. That "pretty fly" song... though I agree with its message that wanna-be's suck, it seemed too MTV. Which is really my whole problem with Offspring, I suppose. Then there's Sugar Ray. What kinda *****sellouts are they? I like their CD, but the fact that their radio songs are nothing like the CD seems too gimmacky for a sale. (for the record, their singles all annoy me).

One, what are your thoughts on Kid Rock? The guitars are always nice and hard, but his rapping... ?

Good gracious, I ainīt gettinī old, I AM old. I donīt even know most the names of bands/singers mentioned here. Well, I still like hard rock & heavy metal: AC/DC, Judas Priest, Accept, Deep Purple, Rainbow (Stargazer), some of the old Sweet songs (Hellraiser, Blockbuster, Teenage Rampage anyone?). Other bands I like are Queen, Status Quo, Velvet Underground, Guns īnī Roses, R.E.M. (especially Nightswimming), Roxette and some German rock bands/singers you wonīt know anyway, so I wonīt bother to mention them.

I canīt stand house and techno, having to listen to techno makes me superaggressive w/in 15 minutes.

Kid Rock is cool. His rapping makes the music sound better. With those heavy guitars and awsome drums, his vocals kick! I also love his new video! I forget the name, but it's cool, it something like "Bumwitdabum...", yeah that's it!

In regards to the other post, I've heard of and have cds of almost all of those bands(I have AC/DC, R.E.M. and a bunch of the other famous ones). Metal is just the greatest. It's too bad that people now think that the stuff like Metallica is now and PanterA is what metal has always been like. I can only name three bands that still resemble the old metal sound and were from thos days:

Megadeth- Front man Dave Mustaine was an orginial member of metallica, but got booted for booze and drugs, but he's sober as hell now. Marty is also one of the greatest guitarists right now. Megadeth's music style hasn't changed at all in the last 15 years.

Ozzy Osbourne- Of course his music style would somewhat change over his now 19 yr. solo from Sabbath. From Randy Rhoads(all hail Randy. May he be up in heaven looking down on this forum now) to Zak Wydle(OH MY GOD HE KICKS!!! My guitar teacher used to be in a band with him!(has tapes to prove!!!)). But his basics have stayed the same since Sabbath.

Black Sabbath- NO, THEY ARE NOT DEAD!! hehhehe, Black Sabbath is still around. Ozzy and the other oldies have joined Tony in their Reunion, which kicks! The Reunion CD is all live from their first Reunion concert, and kicks!(have it). These guys are the MASTERS of metal!

Well, i guess that finishes up this post. I'll just end it with this:

don't yell at me for liking Kid Rock saying "BUT HE RAPS!" I LOVE Korn now because of my friend, Joel. In fact, I'm listening to them now. They are semi-hip-hop, but still Rock, and very Rock lyrics with it. Kid Rock just kicks with his guitar riffs, and he's not all rap. It's like RAM(Rage Against The Machine) and I guess sorrta like 311(i hate em :P). I also like Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffett(you can't live in Miami without becoming a "Parrot Head", especially if your mom is obsessed with him! HA!).

Even though all my friends like rap, I have to say it gets annoying. Have you ever put a big C in front of rap? Coincedence? I THINK NOT. Or have you ever listened to Fatboyslim on one track for about an hour? annoyingggggg. I like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Pantera, Rob Zombie, Nirvana, Staind, and Rammstein. I think Offspring's vocals are really annoying... sounds like he is sucking on a helium baloon, especially "why dont you go get a job." Orgy is pretty good too.

None fo you have mentioned ICP.. I think they are annoying too . Any comments?

Hey, doesn't anyone listen to real music? What's with all the fancy noise most of you seem to listen to? Why not try something that doesn't actually give you the hearing of an 80-year old when you're 20? Music is supposed to feature instruments, not lyrics or "poetry" as the primary motif.

Anyhow try to listen some to Vangelis - that's music for you.

(No offense in any of the above, of course.)
