Ah! I remember my first game.

First I remember finding a nearby artifact. At first I didnt know what to do with it. I made it go to each one of my buildings to see what would happen. Eventually I made it go around the map until I came upon a red granary. I sent a villager there and made it attack it(but at the time I didnt know what my villager was doing. I remember when the granary caught on fire. It was so sweet.
Then I remember finding a rock with little yellow dots in it. I had no idea what it was, and I was so amazed when my villager started mining it.
I also remember the first gazelle I slaughtered. It was so much fun.
Next I had found some fish, eventually I figered out that I could kill them too. I thought it was so funny to see my vills walking back to the town center with a big fish in their hands.
By now this was the most amazing game i had ever played. I was hunting gazelle, fishing, mining stone and gold, and chopping down trees. Eventually I got to the tool age and built a scout and enjoyed making it ride around. And then I saw it. It was a lion. I stoped my horse and stared at it for a while. After about a minute, I finally decided I was going to kill it with my scout. I made it attack, and I closed my eyes fearing the worse. When I opened my eyes I saw my horse standing triumphant, next to the carcass of the lion. I had a new found sence of confidence. Before long, I stumbled upon an elephant. Having killed the lion I felt confident enough that I could take on the elephant. One hit was all it took to kill my scout. I had learned a valuable lesson that day, and I kept my distance from elephants for a while. I also remember making my vills crowed around the scout's body in a moment of silent prayer.
Although I had found an enemy granary and destroyed it I had not even thought about the fact that their might be other civs living on the map, until a little guy wearing red pants came into my city. I made all my vills drop everything they were doing and made them all attack the red villager. I killed him, and I thought I had the toughest civ in the world.
10 seconds later my city was overun by chariots that killed my vills and set my buildings up in flames. I almost cried when I saw my people being slaughtered by these unknown barbarians.
Then when my last barracks was destroyed, the drums kicked in and "YOU HAVE BEEN DEFEATED" came up on the screen.
I couldnt beleive what had happened to my once proud civilization. All I wanted was to be left alone in peace. I remember kicking myself for killing the little red guy. Their was plenty of room on the map for both civs to live in peace but I had to attack the red villager. I had payed the ultimate price for killing him.

The second game I played I surrounded my city with walls and towers.

Do you guys remember your first game of AoE. Please share.

This is an excellent thread!!!!

My first time with AoE was seeing a friend playing it at his house. I knew right then I had to play it on my own. So I played, beat the Egypt and other campaigns and thought I was good!

So I decide to go online and kick some human butt. Well, I had never seen someone who was even halfway decent at AoE play. First game, some guy bronzes at like 17 min. I had all of 8-10 villagers, 4 on food, 4 on wood, and two doing nothing. Well, I see him come in with cavs and chariot archers and I can't believe it. I was mad. This guy must be cheating!!! I called him a cheater among other choice selections and left the game, convinced he had found a way around the cheats being turned off.

Well, then I actually got smart and started reading strats on pages like this one. Needless to say I felt like an ass and wish I remembered the guy's name that I said that stuff to so I could tell him I was just some dumb rook.

Sometimes you learn the hard way I guess!!!

I remember too.......

I was egypt. I was on a tiny island, and I thought, my villagers are hungery! I need food!!! So I tryed to hunt a gazelle, but it ran away, so I tryed to kill the elephant. It killed all 3 of my villagers, and I didn't know how to make more, so I quit. Next game I played vegitarian style

My first game:

I had been avidly playing war2 on Kali, when my buddy Jaunx got AoE a few weeks after it came out. I decided to watch him and his roomie play a few games then tried one of my own. It was an 3 person FFA, standard victory game (real opponents from Kali). I went Babs cause i liked their tower bonus. I mined a bunch of stone while making around 15 peons...lol. I walled the shallows to my side and started towering. I also made a bunch of priests and converted any stone throwers/cats that attacked me. The converting thing was a totally cool idea! Jaunx suggested i build a wonder, so i did. I held off a pretty measly assault and won the game. It was probably the biggest newbie game in the history of AoE, but at the time my heart was racing and i became completely hooked on AoE after i won.

Well, yeah, I certainly remember my first time, which would have been this past Saturday. Yeah, I'm a total fresh newbie. Well, my first zone game, i.e. After having played a month or so against the ai, and a few lan games, I figured I was ready for a zone game, and logged on Saturday night. I have never played, aoe, only ror.

I was still reading the intro faqs, trying to figure out how to enter a game and whatnot, when I see in the chat window, something about a rookie game needing another player. So after some hesitancy, I joined the game. This was the night. I was trying to explain to them that this was my first time. Egads, nobody would believe me. One guy said that since I picked Hittite, I can't possibly be a newbie. Whatever.

It was a 3vs3, gig, med map. I was so excited that I did not even check the rest of the settings. When the game started, I noted something. Hmmm, so this is reveal map. That was a bummer. I've never played reveal b4. Anyway, I HCCCC, and noted that I still have a lot of food. Another bummer. I've never played anything but default res b4. Oh well. Anyway, I was at 8, with my Choson (kanri) ally around 10, and my Sumer (Brutus) ally around 12. I had a Minoan (smapcoryu) enemy next to me at 5, and the other two enemies were another Minoan (USA_Demon) , and an Assy (N_M_C). Hmmm, 2 Mins in a Med map, against an all land team.

I've read many times that you should tool w/ ~20 vills, but there was all this extra food due to non-default res. So I was afraid that the Min dude next to me would rush me early, so I tooled way to early w/ 12 vills and 2 boats. Bad mistake.

Anyway, I built walls and a few towers, and noted that the Min ships were taking over the seas. Oh well. Then I bronzed, and trained a few CA's and camels, and was planning to pay the Min neighbor a visit, when I noticed that there were a 3 Min archeries right outside my town. I killed off a vill that was building yet another archery, and then decided to build some siege to take care of the archeries. I could not build them fast enough, and the compies started to pour in. And they had ST support, too. My outranged towers could not hit them, and I was taking a beating. Then I noticed that my choson ally came around and built a couple of choson towers. Kool, I did not even ask him. Anyway, with the help of those towers, I just kept on fending off compies and STs.

Then everybody but me went to Iron. I had no more gold, so could not, and the only unclaimed gold pile was by the waters, guarded by a host of Min triremes and compies. Egads. Then the Min neighbor came in w/ heavier siege, and half my town was gone. However, his advance was stopped in midway, by my choson ally. Egads, God bless the Choson. (Btw, note that my last name is Cho). I was rebuilding in a corner, and went into feeder mode, just watching the game. I saw a wave of choson legions rush the Min, only to be decimated by a mass of helepolis and compies. I was thinking that the Sumer ally cats would be great here, when the other two enemies resigned. Hmm, I guess the Sumer dude was taking care of things elsewhere. He was leading in points.

I wasn't even functioning all that well as a feeder, so I tribed one more time, and I resigned, just so that I can see everything. Egads, the Min sure had a lot of heleps and compies. Sumer was cleaning up the north. His cats were bombarding the Min triremes. Then the choson rushed in with a larger mass of legion. Again the slaughter, but this time, he had villagers building ball towers along the way. The legion began to seep through the mass fire. It was a kick to watch. I kinda wished I was still in the game. I had 0 gold, but perhaps I could have built a mass of CA's or something, and go for Min's vills while the legion were doing their thing. Anyway, the Min resigned soon afterwards. So there ya go. My first game.

This wasnt my first game, but it was pretty close to it. I played a large islands (i think) with minoan and three comp allies against 4 other computers. Late in the game i was still toying around with the artifact (cool, it moves... Cool, i can put it on this boat... cool, the boat sunk... hey, whered that box thing go?!) After a while i actually had a decent town, and through luck (and CPU on easiest:-)) i got to the iron age. every now and then a guy on a horse and a guy covered in metal armor (centaurian and cataphract, lol) would arrive and kill a lot of my **powerful** clubmen! I had to have this unit so i look in the manual and think, it says cataphract when i click on it, so ill just find out what i need to do to get it (didnt know that minoan didnt get cataphracts). after a lot of time and a whole lot of gold i noticed that i couldnt make the unit. Dang! so then i started a new game with a civ that had cataphracts, lost miserably since i forgot that if youve only been playing a week it isnt a good idea to go up against seven computers. lol

Man this was long time ago. I remember my delight at chasing down those gazelle. Who needs peons anyways I had 3, maybe I built a few more I am sure I never went above 6.
Eventually the not so friendly computer walked in with those mean club guys and put me to my death. I then decided that if I had walls I could keep him out. For the next 10 games or more I was utterly convinced with walls I could win. I mean my bowmen could shoot those cav out there. After soo many games I finally got all the walls up with babylon and my towers were constantly salughtering the silly computer. I won my first game. I was estatic. But I think what I remember most about early ages was those guys with the swords, and those guys with the bigger swords, and those guys with reallyy really long swords. Needless to say these were the academy units and boy was I afraid of em. Especially the big swords and real big swords ones. My 1 or 2 archers who stood and tried to melee them always died. My cav would always die. My own little sword guy (hoplite) died to the comp (what are upgrades?). Man all I knew was keep me away from those guys with the big swords!
