A while back for some reason I looked up the Map Design Tricks by Darius page in the siege workshop, and I couldn't help but giggle a bit when I read the following:

N.B. This page has several graphics that have been optimised as much as possible without compromising quality, but may still take a minute or two to download fully. Please be patient.

This note of course refers to the four jpg:s in the article, most of which have been optimized and reduced to a size of about 300x200 pixels so that we may download them on our old dial-up modems. This is just lovely, and a great reminder of what relic we're actually still in charge of here.

So yeah, I mostly wanted to share this with y'all. Do you have any of these little things about the AoEH website which just makes your day?

These image headers, also in the main map design section. The font, low quality, even the yellow border is a reminder of the good old ancient times I used to spend in the map design section, when the background was still black. When I saw these images again in the wayback archive I just needed to add them again to that page...

Also, the fact that even though we are the oldest heaven, we are technically the most advanced - the CMS is superior to Radiant.

The fact that it's all so text-based because back in the late '90s and early 2000's fancy image rollovers took too long to load.

As for the forum, I still fondly reminisce how we all went crazy with BB and HTML colour codes. Even the sig I have below was done to emulate some fade-out effect. We did some fancy shit back then, formatting text with shadows and glow and whatnot. Unfortunately you can't see the effect on today's browsers anymore due to changes in web coding standards.

Anyway I was at my birthday thread just now. Happy birthday in advance Frukfisk.

When I first joined this place like 10 years ago or so, I found the site to be quite outdated, but as it was the first AoE forum I found I decided to give it a try even with my prejudice.

Now this site 'living fossil' appearance has grown in me, like the coelacanth.
