One reason I like AOE because in many scenarios you can play your way, in order to make a final "victory" condition more difficult to achieve. My favorite is "Coming of the Huns" in ROR. Why? I play to victory by building a wonder but I also allow the Huns and the Goths to finish their wonders. I just have to finish mine first.

Am I the only player to finish the scenario this way? Surely there are others out there who have accomplished this,

My favourite among the official ones is Ctesiphon. I find the developers really did a nice job in the design of it, even if gameplaywise is not as interesting.

Battle of Tunes

The original. Not the DE version - that one doesn't do it justice.

Phatfish, to be honest I think the DE version of Battle of Tunis is extremely close to the original. What makes you think that is not the case?

The AI in DE doesn't do the scenario justice. It's not bad but I prefer playing it with the original game.

I didn't notice that . The AI in AoE was never too "I".

That's true, which makes it even more shameful that DE didn't put in the effort to actually improve upon it.

Either way, I always liked scenarios such as Xenophon's march, where you have to really traverse the whole map with a limited army.

I can't say it was shameful or that they didn't put effort on improving the AI.

A far as I can tell they worked with the same engine as the original AoE engine. Could the AI be improved further in that engine? I think it would be like trying to run Crysis I in a TI-82: not very likely to be even posible.

But maybe I am wrong....who knows :b

The AI in campaigns was completely borked at one point, and I dont know that its been fixed. I was watching a lets play on the tunis level and the AI was incapable of building units because of weird villager routing decisions. Even on hard\hardest the youtuber showed with reveal map\no fog the AI couldnt make units. Also they sent many villagers towards resources near the player base only to get slaughtered while they had those resources near them. I also saw this behavior in several other videos in other campaign scenarios.

The original AI wasn't that great but atleast it brings a fight on the harder levels.

My favorite levels are greece1 migration? and babylon1 holy man. As opposed to AoE2 I prefer the ES style content to the overcomplicated and too difficult scenarios the community made here. I guess I never got into this game enough to be able to enjoy them.

I suspect one of the reasons the DE AI and pathfinding is worse than the original is the increased tile size (+25%), which may mess up things a bit, though I could be completely wrong. Just a hunch.

And lucky for you there are plenty of ES-like scenario's available for download, though they vary in quality.

Aren't ES-style scenarios pretty much considered mediocre by community standards?

I guess I'm one of those guilty of making over-complicated and difficult scenarios. Still I don't see how anyone could dislike those epic Andrea Rosa scenarios where you get to tackle one objective at a time until you're back where you started.

Yes. I mock and flame them plenty on AoKH.

Well, I also didnt like the ingo scenarios for AoE1 even though his works are the best in AoKH. I just didnt know the game mechanics well enough to figure them out, like how to escape as a priest or whatnot. Its fiddly and annoying.

It may be annoying at first, but once you figure it out it is pretty rewarding and gives an "Aha!" moment, which I like. Though I agree some parts can be a bit overwhelming and too difficult at times. Practice is key I guess.
