Is there any way to add new fifth age to AoE? By using AGE3 or such?

Because I've found in language.dll very interesting strings, which is unused in game, such as 7066, or the blank strings around 4201-4206, or 8066. There is an mysterious "Republican Age" (from alpha/beta?). Can these strings be used in some way? By using AGE 3 or such? AoE2 mod Fifth Age halfway succeeded in this case...

Another thing: Is there any way to add more options (current options is Starting Age, Difficulty, Map Type, Path Finding or such) to RM/DM/Scenario/MultiPlayer settings?

I suggested to add new options: the Maximal Age (I know for scenario builder is this possible) and more...

In RM/DM/Scenario settings there are three, or two if just enough enable by some way pop limit option from MP to SP, free places for new settable options
Multiplayer settings have one or two places free.

In language.dll: there are some blank strings (for new options?) 9714-9720, 9739-9740, 9745-9746 and more...

So I think it will be very hard to modify the game settings. Can it be doable with AGE 3 or such? And the main thing Fifth Age ?

this would require changes in the EXE, and possibly lot of changes.
Ages are kind of hardcoded in many places so that wouldn't be easy.

However maybe there is a way to add a research in town center, that uses the same button as ages, that can be developed after iron age, and that would unlock new researches, update units (to get other graphics), etc.
That would be similar to a republic age

Thanks for your reply. But I don't know how to alter game executable..

Btw this will be doable to add tech to town center that looks as age advancing button, but title of age (up) will not be changed.. Or make some way this thing: This button (tech) causes change in language.dll and renames Iron Age to Golden Age or something? Or rather just switch strings for Iron Age..

This' not funny, yea. Hard work needed..

And what about second thing, Options? Probably it will be less difficult, sure??

Anyone replies?

If you put a lot of work into understanding how the ages and technologies work, you could probably add something like a new age. It could appear after Iron Age is researched, and enable a bunch of new units/techs/buildings.

But as chab says, you couldn't do the whole thing that way. The bar at the top of the screen that says "IRON AGE" probably wouldn't be affected, the timeline/score wouldn't be affected, if you wanted to change how the buildings looked you'd have to code that in one building at a time...

So using AGE3, you could halfway make a new age.

The Game modes issue is probably more complicated.
In AGE3, you can add new random map types, but there's no way to add new gamemodes.

If you need a different set of victory conditions, you should set up a custom scenario and adjust the victory conditions there.

what kind of game mode would you add?

As I said, I mentioned "Maximal Age", which will be very good addon to AoE1, because you will be able to select age, where the whole war erupts. Simply, it disables advancing to certain age. I know, that this feature is already in Scenario Editor, but my point is Random Map.

If you check, for example, Bronze Age, your potential should aim to Chariot Archers, or Stone Throwers mixed with Priests. But not Iron. My suggestion, that there will be five options, not four, and such: Stone Age, Tool Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age (without super upgrades), Iron Age (normal). The last fourth will be very interesting, it disables super units, such as Cataphract, Legion, Heavy Catapult, Centurion, Heavy Horse Archer and others...

Someone checks "Stone Age", then hordes of clubmen is only way to win xD. Or someone is clever, and selects Sumerians as their civilization, now Villagers can be used as combatant xD.

I think this should be possible to set a maximum age in RM/DM games

Chab,

Thanks for your support.
I am thinking, that this option for RM/DM would be added only by way of editing .exe, and this is I just don't want. I am not programmer, I only wanted to create big mod... because I am great fan of Age of Empires 1.

What should I do?

you can create an alternate empires.dat version with AGE3 where you disable iron age for every civ, and use that empires.dat file when you want to play a game with "max age=bronze"

Uhm, this is very good idea. Thank you very much, I appreciate this help!

Btw, this will not require mod creation for this purpose, because everyone is able to open AGE3 and change .dat itself. Other thing is, if I create mod with new units, civs, all, I should make five versions of my mod jointed into one big .zip package as one file in Granary.

Thank you really, this option that I can disable ages with AGE3 not came in my mind.

And, if these maximal ages requires altered AI files, this will be 500% work more..but this does not matter :-)

you can now configure a maximum age for DM/RM in RockNRor mod
http://aoe.heavengames.com/dl-php/showfile.php?fileid=2464

Just set your choice in configuration file RockNRor.xml

-1=no limit (default)
0=stone age, 1=tool, 2=bronze, 3=iron
