I agree that the UI feels extremely generic, a bland blue background with really basic icons. One could argue that basic buttons are good for faster readability, but it's really lacking on being unique/giving a distinct identity to the game. Seriously, you could put that UI over any other RTS and you wouldn't feel that it doesn't belong there.
I like that the civs add some kind of gimmick in their gameplay to feel somewhat unique, a good compromise between AOE2 and AOE3 core mechanics while also addressing many of the things that I dislike about AOE3. The stone walls being impregnable to simple arrow/slashing attacks and thus requiring siege are a nice addition to the franchise and reminds me of Total War a bit.
Another interesting addition was the distinction of light and heavy units.
