Yeah I figured you saw my post on the official forums at ageofempires.com. I couldn't post this news also here the same time becuse I had to go to work (yes I work on Saturdays lol), but was going to post it later today. Good to see you're hot on my trail!

Updated the news post with an image of the new DE UI and removed a long-ass link full of weird googlish agebra and letters.

So what do you guys think of the new, clean UI? I'm not entirely in love with it yet (sort of reminds me of Warcraft), but it gives more playfield overview. I really do not like wood and food resource counters being switched around. I do like the addition of idle vils and pop count. Also anyone want to guess what those icons next to the minimap are?

There seems to be a grey outline enclosing the trees, which is similar to an infamous issue caused by improper settings in generating assets.

Strangely, not all previously released screenshots displayed this issue. I only noticed it in "The Colossus" - but it's quite obvious there. It could be they used an older build to make the video.

Yes I noticed that too. I am hopeful FE resolved this though, as you said, judging from the other screenshots.

Also what do you think of the cloud shadows on the ground?

Nope, I have never been there to be honest

Oh noes, too heavily inspired by AoK ._. anyways, they must be military units, economy and resources and normal map.

>cloud shadows on the ground

When playing an RTS, our peripheral vision needs to be sensitive to every change or movement on the screen. Conversely, an argument can be made that every visual movement should reflect meaningful information in the game state. Random decorative movements like these might be a distraction. Perhaps we'll get used to them?

The only pronounced cloud shadows in an RTS I can recall is in certain maps of Command & Conquer 3, and there the game is fast-paced, the units are all visually loud (fluorescent player colors, constant animations, etc.), while the cloud shadows cover every inch of the game world, so they might feel more like water reflections in other games - a texture the player can ignore. Nevertheless, I don't think its successors ever implemented cloud shadows again.

A related suggestion from Gwotyng on Steam forums:
Please avoid using cast shadows with blurred edges in an RTS game like this. (I mean the cast shadows of mounted units, some trees, cliffs, and colosseum.) Because They make players more difficult to recognize the border between units and terrain. And sometimes the units will somewhat look like they are floating on the air.

Please replace the shadows with sharper edges and maybe slightly darker ones. Please check the cast shadows in AoE Online (I don't like the cartoonish style, but it's cast shadows are a nice reference here.), or Starcraft 2 in the highest graphic settings.

It is not about reality or aesthetics, but recognition.

Don't know how to feel about those edges in the fog area. I'm probably used to the more rounded ones in ROR.

And I definitely don't know how to feel about those trees.

The next clip, showing a Priest and some early units in action. And a different UI, probably Egyptian.

All units are harder to read than the originals. But again, everything in AoEE is harder to visualize.

EDIT: Forget to post this. A screenshot of an "Xbox Insider" page. Its feature list includes "Unleash your imagination with the scenario builder and share your creations with easy mod support." AFAIK this is the first time they ever mention mods.
