Well this comes totally unexpected. Like... wwwhat just happened?

First of all, let me say thank you to the entire team of Forgotten Empires. I'm glad some still care about the game that started it! I never expected this would come to fruitation at all especially after seeing all the expansions being made for AoKHD. Again, thank you!

Ok, a little breakdown:

The engine is obviously based on AoKHDs one, which basically means this AoE DE is an overhaul or a remake using new graphics and features. NOPE. Some pros and cons, which in my opinion are:

- I like overall style/graphics for sure, sort of has a blend of Rise of Nations as well. Love the details on most of the buildings. That being said there are some changes which don't hold true to the original, which is either a blessing or a curse. Kind of torn on the colloseum, it does look nice. One thing I really don't like is the cliffs. They should be brown!

- Animations seem very smooth! Love the waves striking on the beach.
- Unit height and width compared to buildings are good. Not sure if they went with the smaller tileset or used the same as AoKHDs for bigger maps.
- The zooming feature is nice.
- 4K. Wow, that is some overkill. Which I won't be able to take advantage of lol.
- The AI *should* prove to be much better.
- No objectives or global objectives. All done through triggers for sure, which allows much more variety. Nope! VCs all the way.
- Very very likely NO backwards compatibility. So that means current works in the Granary can't be played in AoE DE. COMPATIBLE!
- Not too fond of the new trees yet, with the exception of the pine forest.
- I'm pretty worried about bugs and fixes. AoM EE has some serious flaws.

Sys requirements:

"Minimum System Requirements

OS: Windows 10 version 14393.0 or higher required
Architecture: X64 required
Processor: 1.8 Ghz+ Dual Core or greater i3, i5, or i7, or AMD equivalent
Graphics: Intel HD 4000 or Greater (16 or more Execution Units), AMD or nVidia GPU scoring 500 or more on Passmark G3D Mark
Memory: 4GB
Storage: 8-10GB"

Also:

"Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome (Included with Age of Empires: Definitive Edition)"

The Rise of Rome adds four new civilizations and units as well as new campaigns, now fully voice-acted in English.

Didn't see Egy/Assy/Persians, so I guess that still leaves us with a surprise. I'm sure they are in though. Wouldn't call it beta otherwise! Anyways, I can't wait to test this out. Looks very promising for sure. Signed up for the beta of course. I think we all could provide some valuable feedback!

Thanks for letting me know Sup

Hey PF,

Quickly clearing up a few things

The game is built on the '97 version of the genie engine. This to ensure the whole game's feeling stays close to the original. The AI and triggering system are thus not present in AoEDE.

However, it does mean that we support all old scenarios from the granary here. All AoE and RoR scenarios run in AoEDE.

Hi Cysion!

That is absolutely FANTASTIC news. Are there any compatibility issues with custom scenario's? IIRC there were some issues with one of Ingo's campaigns in AoKHD.

What about AI improvements? This is quite the thing in the original game, though I suspect you guys made major improvements to it?

And how are for example the custom voices triggered? External scripting? I guess I can't ask too much since that would spoil everything though.

Just this last one then: you guys got the source code? Reversed engineered the game? Curious to know! It looks so much like AoKHD, though I bet this is because you guys used certain coding parts from that?

What happened in Age2HD is that with the release of The Forgotten, various old units IDs in the data were overwritten. These units aren't really supposed to be used, but complex scenarios (such as Ingo's campaigns) used these and thus could no longer run without owning the Forgotten expansion.

We're not overwriting any unit IDs in AoEDE, so that should not give issues. If you want, you can link me a scenario here and I'll pass it onto QA to make sure it runs properly.

About other features and improvements we'll talk later =)

I guess a quick playtest of the most top rated campaigns (both AoE and RoR) we have is in order to make sure custom scenario's run exactly as they should.

Anyways, I just figured out what started this and how this all came to be, hehe Sorry, no spoilers! It's amazing how quickly you guys developed this. Awesome work.

Hype!!!

Is it intended to be fully compatible even with trickshots type scenarios, e.g. Trisolo's Land of Tribulation???
http://aoe.heavengames.com/dl-php/showfile.php?fileid=2059

Since you are building upon the original Genie engine, would scenario building tools such as Trisolo's Enhanced Editor or my Composite Editor work? (These work mainly by removing unit placement restriction data while editing, then changing back to normal for playing.)

I don't really mind the AI besides the necessary bugfixes here and there, but the main problem is that the unit pathfinding of the original AOE is atrocious (e.g. try moving several units across a tight spot, they all get cluttered and stop moving), I hope they address this issue.

I was wondering if you have had a look at Chabs RockNROR and how it adds triggers, greatly improves ai and drop points and if his work is being used for the Definitive Edition.

Is it being based off of Upatch or are you actually incorporating Upatch into the remastered? As I have some mods that I was planning to make for Upatch HD and was wondering if I could easily moved them over with Upatch's mod manager. Will it have Rivers and Oasis maps featured in UPatch HD?

What game play changes are being made to the game, I saw that the graphics in the trailer for the farm did not have the barn. Is this something that hasn't been implemented into the graphics or does this mean farms are walk-able? Will it include an in-game tech. tree?

I would like to see what the Armored Elephant looks like, as I think it would best resemble the dark style your using for the definitive edition. My opinion on the graphics is mixed, I think it would be hard to differentiate the different units (particularly Archers) with the dark aesthetic design. I think the buildings look nice and would be great to see other civilizations tile sets and UI. I find it amusing that no one has mentioned this yet but what do the cheat units look like?

There are some nice Voobly features as well like Continental Map (With and without rivers) as well as text being the color of the player in the in game chat. Will these features be present?

Once this project is released age of empires heaven might start getting some more action! Can't wait.

@Suppy, this is no Lord, this is an Emperor.

When Aoe2 HD came around, a lot of old trigger tricks stopped working as they used to. So some of the old tricks for aoe1 scenarios might stop working, making some scenarios incompatible. But I'm hoping they haven't changed too much, so everything works as they always have!

Well, that came unexpected. Quite a surprise when I saw this game in my youtube recommended videos.

Great idea. I do have some questions regarding it.

Will it be including formations and gates aok-style?

And are many things still hardcoded? During my Age of Italy attempt I frequently ran into things that were hardcoded, as well as issues with assigning ai files in RM and handling of many units (I changed the population to be more like 200 max I think). As we all know, nothing keeps a game alive like modding (and remasters apperently), so I would be curious as to the mod friendliness of the game, espcially considering the modding roots of Forgotten Empires.

Also, Hi everybody, how are we all doing?

I don't get the point releasing a new AOE HD version if the idea is to make it like AOK.
If so, just make a AOK HD release !

So, of course, please, no gates.
Formations are a real danger too as it slows down everyting and completely changes the gameplay.

The new version should update graphics, main balance errors, possibly interface (but the original one is quite nice already), not change the game experience

While I agree on the no gates in the base game, it would be nice if they kept things like that in mind, even if only for modding potential. Age of Italy was going for an entire reblance of combat roles of units, especially siege weapons. The lack of gates and castle-like structures was really annoying me in the creation of that mod, one of the multiple reasons I dropped it eventually.

Basically I think it comes down to what one wants a remaster/remake to do. One might want just steam multiplayer support and slighty updated graphics, others may expect a modern interpretation of an old classic, including things that have become possible since that time. An actual remake (not remaster) using clues from all age of empires titles (except online) and the fairly similar but unique Rise of nations. Maybe interpreting ideas from other games like battle for middle earth or c&c. I've always liked RoR most because of its time setting, but on gameplay some things are simply dated. Like lack of rally points, creating a que of techs and different units (haven't played AoE a while, but thought this wasn't possible) and a half decent pathfinding. Its been quite a few years since the release and I'm honestly hoping for more than a new paint job, as in an actual new title in AoE/RoN vein. I'd say the interest for the hd remakes and lack of modern rts games does make that quite possible I'd say. At least somebody at good ol microsoft is still keeping the aoe memory floating.

It is true that we are discussing now about personal preferences :P

No game is perfect and I am sure AoK added many new features not because they were exclusive of the middle ages irl but because the gameplay issues with AoE.

But I still want the game to keep its identity. We have many AoK clones already xD and some people were already making an AoK mod with AoE graphics and civs.

I agree that making this a WinStore-Win10 exclusive is not the best idea, even more so considering many people into the original AoE would be retro gamers that don't like the latest M$ products.

I am a client of M$ products as I run Win 10, I use Office and I always considered the Xbox line of consoles better than Nintendon'ts and PolyStations. I really enjoy M$ published games: AoE, Gears of War, Killer Instinct (at least the last iteration). Bill Gates seems to be doing a better good for the humanity than other billionaires out there. That being said what I am going to express is just my opinion, which luckily we can do in this forum as long as it is done with civility. It kind of worries me how stuff seems to be developing.

M$ is making what I think are not the best decisions for gamers for some years already.

WinStore is apparently inferior compared to Steam (or at least I heard, as I use neither).

Also there was the Xbox One decisions, that although don't affect PC gamers, show that someone there seems to be a bit lost regarding what players want: kinect and online as musts, not possible to play used-copies of games, cancellation of exclusives (like that ScaleBound game that looked pretty neat, even though the main character was obnoxious), the delay of PC version releases (Galo 3, Gears of War 2...) etc. And although some of these have been worked around, sometimes I say to myself "What the heck are they thinking".

If M$ cares about pleasing the fans of the series they should reconsider their decision and try to make AoEDE as available as possible, or they may suffer something similar to the Xbox One fate (unexpected low sales).

For me the win10-WinStore is not a deal breaker (actually at least in my case that couldn't be more irrelevant), but I know that for many others getting them is not an attractive necessity.
