I hooked up again with Jehu last night in Esquiline for two games.

The first game was a 3v3 cont. default random civs. Not much to tell on this game. I drew Summerian but didn't see much action as our ally, FWH_Wolfpack (he is pretty good), bronzed first and destroyed his neighbor. Jehu was Roman, bronzed before me and started thumping one of the other guys. By the time I was ready to join in it was pretty much over. I attacked grey next to me and it was over.

The second game we played wasn't much of a challenge either. I was Minoan and in the pocket at six. Jehu was to the left of me and a newbie (red) was on my right. I bronzed first and sent compys to beat up the middle guy who had drifted too far south. Meanwhile Jehu was pushing his guy out of his territory. Red was a newbie and just hanging on. Jehu and I then swept the map clean.

It was fun playing again with Jehu. He is a courteous and solid ally. Again I celebrated with some coke and boudin. I also had some seafood gumbo. Hey Jehu, maybe we can venture into rated and you can help me improve my dismal rating of 1491.

Save some boudin for me. I've only had it a few times and while it is very good it is so rich that only a little is enough. I wonder if you need a little creol blood to do seriuos damage to mass quantities of boudin. Now cabrito or Menudo I can handle in spite of my Anglo-Saxon/Nordic breeding.

Yes, maybe we should try to get into Quirinal or the rated rooms. My rating is 1600 as I have not played in rated rooms yet with RoR .

I saw Number_6 after our last game last night. Maybe we can meet up with some of the others soon.

Later

Looks like I'll have to wait until tomorrow to play with/against you. I'll be on the Zone around 5:00 PM CST, but off again by 7:00 PM. I might be able to get a game in around 10:00 PM though.

What room(s) are you going to be in? Half the time Quirenal is full, but it seems like you've been hanging out in Esquiline. Let me know where you'll be.

If we can't hook up tonight, perhaps we can team up at the Fanatic Clan party that KaBaN was gracious enough to invite us to. Hmmm Average Players Clan vs Fanatic's.....

Looks like i got online just as y'all were finishing up. I'll be looking for you.

BTW, last night was just horrible. Game freezes, lag, difficulty in setting up games, arguments over pre-posted settings once game started, you name it. Ack.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Looking forward to playing with you all.

I also got to play one game with Neilkaz last night. He pretty much ran the table by himself; I barely saw the enemy that game (other than when I scouted them). I agree with you, Capt, it was fun playing with a fellow forummer (is that a word?). I look forward to playing more with others that hang around the AOEH forum.

I tend to stay out of all the rookies rooms unless I am playing w/my 11 yr old step son, in which case I use a smurf name for our 2v2's. These seem to be fair matchups.
However, I find that in the rookie rooms unless I am called in there to play AGAINST a set team that the games go like described above ! What I am saying is that any three of us posting here rate to massacre a usual selection of three players from the rookie rooms. In Q we are likely to get a better game. Therefore, I try again and again to get into Q when it is full, as I want to avoid blowing people away in Esquiline because it also will not help me to improve my tactics when I can kill one undefended tool age guy at 17 with 6 CA's and then have 9 CA's kill another at 19 who still hasn't bronzed. When you are playing with really good players like Jehu and Wolfpack, you rate to crush 98% of the non set 3v3's in any rookie room. Please don't think I am criticizing any of you as I play on set teams alot with friends in Q. However, I do hope to have opposition that can put up some kind of fight. Many of you posting here may play almost exclusively in the rookie rooms. Some of you are the best players that hang out in there while others actually are true rookies.

Good points Neilkaz.

I have been playing some in the rookie rooms to knock the rust off of a 3 week period of inactivity. Prior to my lay-off I was working my way out of a slump. Plus, playing with and against guys like Stooge_Goofy, Stooge_Fright, and Stooge_Ted can make me feel pretty inadequate. Petty excuses I know.

It is time to leave the rookie rooms again, unless its a game aginst a set team, particular a clan. They tend to hang out in Esguiline(sp?).

Yes it was fun playing with Scarab and O Capt last night.

Scarab called me into a 2v2 inland game. One enemy took Shang so guess what civ I switched to ? I am at 3 but my map is lousy. The water north of me is a fishless lake against the side that, thankfully,I didn't dock.Speed is upped to the posted 1.5 and I am wishing I had an easier map to play.Water to the south of me shows only a couple of fish, but continues down the coast so I put up two docks once I solved my wood problem with a wood pit. Moving a couple of my Shang peons towards the enemy camp at 4:30 I encounter and barely escape an angry horde of peons. I also see signs that he was going to do a tool job on me. I had just clicked the bronze upgrade and moved a bunch of goldies to the mine way in back of my camp where they hopefully go undetected. I tried to wall but axers managed to get in. I had 2 scout ships to help a bit, while my peons scattered as I bronzed and made a 2nd and then 3rd stable. Scarab was reporting some minor tool confrontations with the other enemy, but wasn't hurt. My cav's then butchered many axers and some bowmen and down the coast they went along with a few war galleys. I moved a few peons down the coast to move my docks and make forward ranges to add some CA's. The tool rushing enemy was pounded as I kept making military and then tested the guy next to Scarab. He had some defences but not enough to save him and he shortly resigned when my reinforcements arrived. Now it was back the first enemies town and Scarab arrived with his army and it was game over. I admit I was smiling like the Cheshire Cat after that one !

4 points to make about the above game.

1) Never forget the +5 bonus that cav have vs Rax infantry (not slingers or hoplites)We tend only to make camels in ROR because they cost less gold and have attack bonuses vs cav and chariots.

2) My counter attack on the failed tool rusher was clear because he hadn't the time/resources to field any bronze age defences. It was risky to then proceed willy-nilly in late bronze to the other enemy so I brought a good sized army while continuing to pump cav and CA's from my bases. Achievements told me that I should be able to hurt him and I didn't let up once that was the case. My first enemy had been knocked down to less than 10 peons and while some CA's went thru his town on the way to my 2nd victim and shot a stray peon or two. I didn't waste time killing buildings that nothing could be produced from (given his trashed state) Rather than spend 1800 res ironing I simply pressed a winning situation to victory in bronze.

3) Scarab you did fine that game. You were well defended and building up and surely would have come to my aid had I needed it. It is far better to have any ally like that than one who has no defences, no army , and cries when 2 axers show up at 14 min. I look forward to more games with you .

4) It can be hard to play under the expectations to dominate a game ! It would have been fun to have a great spot and been bronzed a minute earlier w/10 more total vils. However, one's purpose in playing team games with friends is to try make sure the team wins. In the end it matters not whether, you/I have one peon left and a score of 160, while our ally has a score of 700 just as long as our team won !
I was happy with my play that game, but you'll see, that I lost my luster in the 2 games I played w/ O Capt. It is time to play now, so I will post about those later. .. neilkaz ..

You're right Neil, that map really sucked onions. It took me forever to find a food source. Finally (starting to panic alittle) I tossed a SP near a pair of dumbo's and scouted like a madman. Wood wasn't a problem, because I took Phoeny, but what a set-back.

I hope that my next start has three shore fish on one side of my TC, berries on another, a big forest on the ...... you all get the point.

Right now, I'm thinking of a way to sneak out of work early to get a couple of games in!

Neilkaz is right. I will go to Quir. or rated from now on. The reason I went back to Esquiline was I was on a horrendous losing streak (by even my standards), and had to get my confidence back.

My 7 year old son: Daddy, what you doing?
Me: Playing Age of Empires.
Son: Oh, you losing again?
Me: Grrr. yes.
Son: Make a batmobile.
Me: You can't cheat in these games.
Son: Then how you gonna win?
Me: GRRRRRR. Go eat supper and take your bath.

Thank goodness for that, the pressure to be comical is so demanding. I feel that a huge weight has been lifted.

Actually I have never played a cheats game. Hey Brey what do you say, 1v1? My batmobile vs. yours!

Hey, yeah, I would like to play with more AoE forummers...not against them, as I'm only average. You may not see many of my posts here, but I avidly read all your pearls of wisdom.

My zone name is Field_General, and I would be thrilled to be on the same team as forummers. See, then we can come back here and post about our glorious victories...
