Beat neil? Here's what you do:

1. Get him drunk.
2. Start a game with him.
3. Send 4 pretty girls to his house to "distract" him while you play.

I guarantee you'll win.

Hmmm,
I have been trying to get a game with neilkaz for a while now. It has been several months since I last played with him. I guess he has come on a lot since then because in the game I remember he was fairly average in iron.
I get the impression Neilkaz is a very technical kind of player. I think he plays very efficiently and technically well. Sounds to me like he is the sort of guy who will tool you with assy and boom with Phoe. So my advice, if you don't think you can beat him at his own game is to try something radically different.
I admire the techincal contributions he's made to the AOE forums but he is yet to demonstrate greatness on the battlefield.
Or maybe I'm wrong, all seems a little personal to me.

Always gang up on the good guy, I say. Force him to fight several battles at once (especially a land and a sea battle simultaneously). And never let the best guy on the opposing team boom away in peace. Go after him in tool and have a teammate follow up in bronze. Some people are just impossible to kill once they have started infesting the map - they seem to be everywhere at once (Maimin_Matty comes to mind...) so walling can be very important as well.

Tool rushing seemed to work pretty well for NoSoup4U against him. Of course if you are going that approach neilkaz better not have me as a partner or you'll die . To beat an expert you have to beat an expert. There is no one answer, you really have to know what to do with what your given. If you have a good tool rushing map, tool rush, if you have a good booming map boom.

Ender,

Good point ender, if you don't have backup (which I assumed I had in the game you are referring too) you are in trouble. My general philosphy of tool rushing any really good player is the same as when i get a bad civ in random civs. Tool rushing in multiplayer reduces the gap and effect a good player can have on a multiplayer game. In a pop 150 game the expert can be killing at least two opponents by the twenty minute mark without a problem. If he has been tool rushed he may only be equal in strength to an unmolested intermeidate player, this gives you ca chance.

On a personal note, I would like to address the tragedy of the game you are referring too. I tool rushed neilkaz LATE (12 mins) even though he was shang. I was counting on a partner who said he could iron in 21 mins with a bronze army. This of course never happened, I walled terribly AND woodchopped next to the water....STUPID. I won't play so casually against you again (don't know why I did it in the 1st place).

Lastly, ender, you know what ever happened to Turanos or the other ExPerTs? I see emo around but the rest seem to have drifted into the distance.

What happened to emowilli ? I haven't seen him at least a month ! If you guys do see him.. say hi for me. He plays under many zone names so maybe I didn't notice him. Often, he has told me it is he, after he has completely dominated the game. I only drilled him hard once, but have been on the receiving end of a couple of his sumie beatings. Thank God he has been on my side sometimes.

I wasn't around this game for nearly as long as you guys were but I honestly am confused as to why so many drop great players are dropping out. It is the time commitment for some and other may be playing other games. For me, I need to play multiplayer... and no game I have tried provides close the needed blend of speed and strategy that ROR played at 1.0 speed on def RM does for me. Other games are complex enough or are too slow or simply " shoot em up click fests".
This game simply rocks !! More importantly, I hope that as the years pass and we move on to AOK or whatever, that we all will look back on the friendships and rivalries established thru this game and say "Thanx" !
OMG, I gotta be an old fart to say THAT!!!!... ROFLMAO ... neilkaz ...

I think quite a few people are getting kind of bored with RoR - their game has stopped evolving, it's too hard to find reasonable opposition (unless they are guys you have played 1000 times before), and many feel that games between top players are basically decided by the Random Map God rather than skill and strategy. Remember, many people have been playing RoR for 8-9 months now (those who got their hands on the beta). It's only to be expected that people get kind of bored after 9 months and perhaps 1000 multiplayer games overall (AoE+RoR).

The real reason many top players are leaving at the moment seems to be Everquest. All the great players in WW who leave claim that EQ is to blame. What made RoR so great was its unrivaled multiplayer entertainment value. Well, according to what I hear Everquest is able to match or even surpass that value. I can't wait to get a hand on a copy myself.

Just played neilkaz on a continental (I think its his fav) and he had a great start. So obviously I lost :-<. However, after studying the game I conclude that even with that start he was beatable. Neilkaz did one of his wonderful 52 ship, 14 minute bronzes,

I think their are only 2 ways to beat this-- Had my roman (though preferably shang) ally went full tool rush (and I mean no more than a 10:00 tool) Neilkaz may have lost, his ships were all very close so one or two scout ships could have taken them out before he tooled (as the shang in this game did to me). The only other option I saw was a quick Iron, though that would be much more risky, but some Ballistas and Cats would have taken out his compies in short course. Still either one would have been pretty hard to do effectively. Neilkaz is just a pretty darned good player, especially developing.... oh for the days of inland defaults with almost no water....... Nah..... Just don't play him + some good allies with the sound off, they'll have all your boats dead before you know you're attacked

Fun game Jake but too bad we didn't see any direct action. I did have a super start w/Phoe taking a berry patch then a quick wood pit, and than another pit by 2 phants which later served to get me to an 11:35 tool w/30 real vils("blank style ") and bunch of FB's from 3 docks. I built a forward rax on the roman at 3 ( me being at 12 w/allies(FWH's) 10 and 8) and added a stable w/the two forward builders(worth slowing bronze for 25 sec build if your tool attacking) ..clicked my bronze upgrade button at 12:06 and then added forward ranges making no more FB's. I sent my first clubber unarmored (to see if he'd counter attack and bring more vils over)into three woodies and killed one before he got boned. LOL as he then tried to gang bone the next two( now armored w/tool working)By then I had several bowmen and more upgraded clubbers and my scout found all the rest of his peons. I killed many and cut off some at the shallows but a few got away in to enemy Hitt territory at 4:30.(Someday I will learn to offensively wall that escape path !!)I was bronzed at 14:26 w/31 real vils/25 FB's(none made after I tooled) 11 tool age units and 2 dead tool age units ! I guess having made 69 units by 14:26 is OK !! If I had that map every game, I might actually be good ! (Fast berries, easy wood pit, 2 phants)

I then queued up a few more vils, got wheel, IB, and FS and was mining gold and making more military buildings at home and in the conquered Roman territory. Rarely do I go compie w/Phoe but I wanted the option for more and cheaper fire power since I feared a Hitt counter attack. I only go compie if I plan to make alot of them since I dislike spending 500 on upgrades for them ! Here is where(as you mentioned) I should have snuck a scout ship or two down the Roman coast, and docked there to extend fishing and sea control. However, I poured all I had into what I knew would be a winning bronze age land army ! The hitt had walled my tool age militia out. However, I hacked thru his wall but they did little more than distract him while I made enough CA's & compies & camel and crossed another shallows and after some fighting I had more than he could stop. My Shang ally had earlier fended off your slingers and beaten up your FB's and he and the other ally were moving on you. All then resigned.

Your point that I could have built TC's in the conquered Rome area was valid but I didn't because I was using all my food for the army. Thus I didn't need more TC's. I had enough vils working at home to supply my military needs. However, near the end I needed to move my docks faster and perhaps add farms or more FS since I did have some surplus wood. At no time was I worried about the safety of my fishing so I did not worry about defending it. I had tooled the only guy that could pose any nearby naval threat and hurt him badly so defeat at sea was the least of my worries. However, I should continue to try to expand and exert control over more of the map. I simply try to do what it takes to win but, can relax too much when the victory is clear. When I have the jump on good iron civs during my dominant time frame in early/mid bronze I don't want to release the pressure for one second !

It is very, very hard to severely damage that kind of fast boom in a 3v3. A couple of scout ships will damage but probably not cripple my fleet before my defensive ships arrive. A roman tool rush at 10 flat will have to be VERY strong to cripple a 30 real vil economy. I still would have little trouble running and getting to bronze. Remember that it is 3v3 and I have allies who can counter attack in the tool age Roman town w/bronze units and the same allies can trib me a bit to bronze and/or re-establish myself. I am not denying that a full scale land tool rush at 10 or even 10:30 combined with several scout ships could mess up that big, fast boom. However, I takes a great spot to do all that to anyone that quickly in tool!

Fun game Jake.. let's play on Med sometime.. you get 2 good allies and so will I... neilkaz ...

well Out4Blood and maimmin_matty are playing in UAT3. They are 1 of 2 undefeated teams. Turanos plays under a different name, though I never see him around. Xpert202 hasnt' sent me a message in a long time so I think he went on to other things, maybe now that he's old enough to drive he doesn't have time for computer games . Xpert101 plays under the name Reverant, or something close to that, I understand he's a very good DM player, and he's still good at RM. piepie I never really knew and don't know what he's up to. emowilli came back for a while at the start of ROR, haven't seen him much since, I know he had a lot of bad luck with partners. I think thats everyone... any Xperts I left out, sorry. Oh yeah, and I don't play anymore, you can find me on EQ every free minute I get.
