ahahahahahahaha!!!!

I remember when I have been playing for 3 months! I was kicking butt in non-rated rooms and thought I was an expert since I was beeting the *****out of most players! My dear little Ghost2000, can I suggest you something? If you really want to see if you're an expert, play a few games with some "Wannabe_experts" or experts, if you win at least 50% of those games, you're either a Wannabe_expert or an expert... You do not know any guys like that? Oh! Ok, let me help you! Add these buddies to your list and have fun!

Allez_les_gars
Orangepanther
Fanatic_Kaban
prits
Emowilly
Ender
APOC_Randy
GOTB_Cad_57
aRc_hoplite007
aRc_EINY
MiC_EH
MiC_Biodigestor

I played with most of these guys and I know they're good... Else, you can also go to rated rooms and find a high rated player to find out if you're really good(1750+ at RoR and 1850+ at AoE)...

Bye bye!!
Phil

DM or RM?

No offense to you DMers, but I believe that if someone plays enough he can be an expert in a few months at DM (on some settings).

However I believe it takes much longer to be an expert at RM. I dont believe you could be an RM expert in only a few months, in fact I think it takes close to a year to truly be an expert at most/all settings.

Oh my! My name appeared on the List , thanks Phil!

And, it happened to me to Ghost, don't worry in 2 months you will feel like a rookie again, you will stumble up on some better players and die... And then die again, and again... And then you will realize that you are not an expert..

trust me

LOL,

No matter how good you get, there is always someone better. And if you ever do make it to the top, always some that want to knock you off, and they will! At least Ghost you are not a rookie.

Just keep playing more and different games and you will be humbled many more times.

I'm 0.500 lifetime in the Zone!!

Some more people to test your skill against, in no particular order (no offense to people not included, this is just a sample):

__giggles/__bane/_Skyla_

maimin_matty
aloha_archer

Phalanx2

Play these guys. It puts your skill in some perspective, I promise you.

In all honesty, 1500+ players with 20+ games should be a challenge enough. I have played with some on your list Spam and what they can do still boggles my mind.

Though, I'm humbled most every night of play and those are your run of the mill matty room junkies.

I am sorry if I forgot any good player on the list I gave. It's just I have not played all of you and I do not know who's bad or good.

I think everybody agrees that after 3 months nobody can be an expert...

Phil,

Rest assured that I do not fall in the expert category, nor am I a great player. For those I have beaten of late, I was just plain lucky.

Yes, nothing like the adrenalin surge of victory to give you a ridiculously inflated sense of your own prowess! Luckily, my winning streaks usually max out at about ONE game, so I'm always put in my place! (And now I figure to get considerably rustier, since I've been spending most of my gaming hours on HOMM III!)

Well, do not worry, I have been put up in my place a lot since a couple of weeks. I am rustier than I used to be since I play less AoE/RoR and I have not explored all the new possibilities of RoR. Would you believe it if I tell you I never produced a single slinger in my life?! Yep, that's the truth. So, do not worry, I am an average player at RoR because, deeply, I'm still AoE formatted

BTW, how much do they cost those poor slingers?! I guess I will have to check it out!

Gosh I got alot of replys, too bad they were mostly hateful. And some in my defense. I was just trying to say that it was easy. I know there are alot of people that are better than me, I never said that I was the BEST because I know I am not. I would get alot more play in if people didnt quit there games. I fixed my video problem so now its not dreadfully slow for people. Believe it or not I just learned to use the shift key a day ago. Im learning new strats day by day, I to have not produced a single slinger either because I think they are totally weak. Might as well produce a legion. I have never really played rated dm,rm because they always told me to resign, even my teammates.
And doesnt that look bad on my record. Then the dang * Experts * booted me out of their room because my score was low. Now how am I supposed to play experts when my scores low

I get stuck with rooks still.

Im also very busy with my website

Ghost, none of these are hateful replies. however they are meant to tell you that, no matter what, you haven't perfected this game, and, believe me its hard. Look me up, and we can practice.

But you do have a head start on me, as i spent months of being a newbie, thinking i was DA BOMB, and trying to destroy people who were way better, that was when i though the CA rush was cheating. LOL.

Ghost said, "I to(sic) have not produced a single slinger either because I think they are totally weak. Might as well produce a legion."

Okay, other than the fact that Slingers are available in early Tool and Legions don't show up until late Iron. Ghost, I'm guessing you don't play against tool rushers very much. And _single_ slingers are really ONLY good for stopping bowmen. Try getting a gang of them together (with stone mining) in your opponent's town at the ten minute mark and see if you don't change your mind about their effectiveness. Legions are great if you're playing against a SimCity opponent but most good players aren't going to kick back and wait for you to Iron before they come after you.

For about a hour, I think I felt like you, because for the last week, I had won 5 2v1's where my partner would drop in early tool or stone, but I had been playing in Viminal. One of my friends got me to go to a rated room, which I had never been in, and allied with my friend and a person in his clan. I had played with these 2 multiple times, and every single time whether in Quirinal, Esquiline, Viminal, we would win by a landslide with few problems. Sure I would be rushed, if I had one camel defending, they would come and save me with 6. Well, anyways, we started a rated game. That opened my eyes tremendously. I got my whole economy bashed in at about 13 mins by 3 chariots which expanded to 20 within a few minutes. I still had a few vils, so I moved them to my allies tcs. To end this quickly, we got beat down to a bloody pulp and now my rating is below someone who hasnt played a game yet. Moral: try rated games.

In one way newbies today have it easier than newbies a year ago, because there is so much information and so many guides published on this site and others. You can theoretically read your way to above average skill. I know of a lot of players who could put up a good fight after a month or two of play due to the excellent instruction available on the net.

However, to become really good there is only one way: play lots and lots of games against opponents at least as good as yourself. You have to practice until the right thing to do becomes second nature. The less you think about the little things the more attention you can devote to devicing a good overall strategy and thinking ahead. Many experts seem to micromanage everything all of the time (at least that's what it feels like when you play them!), and that is because each game element require so little attention of them, comparatively speaking. There is only one way to internalize the game mechanics in this way: practice, practice and more practice. This is the main reason a player who's been at it for three months cannot compare with someone who's been playing since november 97.

My 2 cents

I agree with everything you said but the fact a newby, with lots of readings on strategies could put up a good fight after 1 month. Not 1 month, not 2, not even 3. It takes MUCH longer to have enough experience to consistently put up a good fight on most settings. There is no way after 3 months a player could play both island and inland maps correctly...

Oh my I played rated yesterday it really stunk I was playing v experts 1700, 1678 .
My team was at 1600 Like me since I dont play rated. Both times I played I was doing good but then my allies dropped both time and didnt give me resources. Well thats good so far one resignation and 1 loss. Fair that they drop and leave my hanging alone in a Dm. I had eles attacking, heles, cats, and legions, Oh and did I mention I was rushing
thats 3v My Rush. Well that one totally bombed every time my allys were at 280 for there score and I was like 400 same as other guys. Totally unfair I would say. Then later I went back into nonrated room and I had good team that didnt drop. I mean geesh rated guys drop more. Then later I got into a good legion only battle with my friend me against him. My team was ok but his partner left and gave him resources. Through out the game I would find swarms of leftover green guys in my town wiping out farmers/houses. Mean while my partner is yelling I need resources. I had massive amounts of farms and villis on gold. Then my partner took my big tribute and spent it on walling himself in which was cheating. I told him it wasnt a good idea since yellows score was 2038 to My 1147 and his 898. Mine was 967 before I tributed half my resources. I told the dumb guy that yellow was everywhere yet he said SCORE doesnt matter. Um.. Well at the end after his cheap walling attempts. His military was a whopping 1600 score. To a mere 450 of mine. I believe him a TRUE expert though me and him were pretty even the whole game until dead green guys came along.

So we're talking deathmatch? No wonder.

I can see how someone who plays deathmatch would think this is an easy game. I mean, the whole point of random map (the way the game was designed) is to balance your economy (resource gathering) with your military (resource expenditure) while deciding which upgrades to get when and alsop planning your attack/defense. People who start with deathmatch lose out on the whole balancing act between economy and military. They have the crutch of enormous resources at the start. No offense to the DMers out there, but I think it's ten times more difficult to become proficient at random map default resources than to learn DM. This to me is like someone saying they are an expert basketball player because they can sink 50% of their free throws.

Of course you don't see the use for Slingers in Deatchmatch. When you start with all the resources you need to Iron, there's no reason to put together a force of Tool units. By the time you get to the enemy, he's in Iron already.

I have nothing against anyone who wants to "specialize" in Dm but I do take offense to that person considering himself an expert at anything EXCEPT Deathmatch.

Jim,

I agree with you mostly that RM is harder to pick up than DM. However, expert DM still requires an incredible level of expertise in management both unit and resources. Its a different game. Top DM players will still clean him as top players clean us in RM. And I have won all my DM games with my RM skills, but I have played w/ crappy players.

Well I guess now I can try to play more RM games. Dont get me wrong though I played the Trial RM's and I was pretty good. When I first started playing Dm everyone told me I should play Rm because I had massive score of just resources and no military. I think if you become good at Dm,Rm the overal game.
Any settings no prob. I won all or most of my Trial Games so I decided to play Dm. But I still like R'ms because you have to find your opponent, get resources, and fight him. The real thrill of the game but I also know alot of people who just play r'ms.

Why not play both?
