Who were they? Shang are obviously modelled on the ancient Chinese. Choson also sounds oriental, but who were they modelled on?

choson was modeled on the Ancient Choson. no joke. the chosoners were called cruel by their chinese neighbors. The area of Chosun, land of the mornign calm, was north korea.

Thanks Elijeh. Oriental history is not my forte. I casually read something about very talented ancient Korean generals and highly capable troops, so this may be it.

I'm a lurker/reader, rather than a poster, but anyway, yah, Choson is Korea. I should know, my last name is "Cho", and my grandfolks keep these purty old family tree docs. I even have some land back in Korea, that supposedly dates back quite a bit, attributed to the Cho's. The land is in South Korea, though, but I think Elijeh is right about our northern decent. I heard somewhere that we are actually an offshoot of the Mongols. Totally not sure about that, though.

Not sure about ES's depictation of their military, though. Not that I'm complaining, since ES people never assumed to be historians, and ES's Choson is a fun and popular civ to play. But anyway, a better depiction of the ancient Korean military would be archers, horse archers and cav. Fast troops were needed as much of the land was Hell Country. Oh and Alchemy. I forget if ES's Choson gets that or not (ironically, I don't play much Choson), but flaming projectiles were pretty common, I believe. And pikemen/spearmen, but not sure what that would be in AOE/ROR. I guess Legion is close enough. Ask any Korean you know, and they will tell you that meticulously researched historical dramas/documentaries are popular among modern Korean broadcasting. And the above is what you see depicted in such broadcasting. If you live in NYC (where I do), check out Channel 17. Oh, and navies. Ancient Korean navies were infamous for their strength. Ask any Korean you know about the "turtle ship" and Admiral Yi. As for towers, I'm not sure if ES had this in mind, but Choson was among the first of the ancient civs to employ watch towers. Not sure about priests. Actually, Choson should get something like the Mace bonus. Many foreign missionaries were slaughtered in ancient Korea.

Oh and yes, Choson was indeed known as a rather cruel race.

A credit to ES is their research of the architecture. Ancient Korean buildings looked pretty much like what you see in ES's Choson.
